Switching international allegiance

I don't 'support' any country. If I were to choose my favourite it would be Germany, however international football doesn't appeal to me.

Used to get as passionate about England as the Blades until about 2007. The penalty shootout defeats hit me just as hard as United's play off failures. I could write an essay on why things changed but I genuinely don't think I'll even cheer when (if) England score at the next World Cup. In fact I would absolutely piss myself if they lost every game 6-0.

It's not something I'm proud about but it's just how I feel. In just 10 years I've gone from caring deeply about the national side to sort of hoping they didn't exist at all. I don't think I'm the only one

Same really, couldn't give a toss. I remember watching England in the 90's and early 2000's and I massively gave a shit, had all the shirts, home and away, big flag out the window, wanted them to succeed, believed in them haha

A combination of England failing constantly despite having arguably the best team at at least 3 or 4 competitions in the recent past, the awful managers we keep appointing, the awful football we now play and the fact that I now unfortunately see the St George's cross and England kit as part of the EDL massive twat starter kit just mean I don't bother.

I watch England if they're on because I like football, and that's it, I'd rather watch Tottenham on Sky or whatever to be honest though, half the England team are there but they actually play decent football.

I hate all the cliches too when England are on TV, especially when we play Germany. All WW2 bollocks, I just find it offensive for want of a better word, maybe tasteless is more what I mean. Also England are on ITV, so the coverage is painful to watch.

I want any of our players to do well though if they get a call up, I'll be watching Wales to see if Brooksy gets a run out, even planning on watching the USA play Soccerball to see if CCV crocks his international colleagues or just United players haha, but that's because I actually do give a shit about United and care about our players doing well.

I'm British, but within that i'm English.

I'd happily follow Scotland, Wales, NI or Republic as "local" countries but i'd never support them unless i found there was a direct bloodline.

English (although could claim some Scot through my dad’s family) through and through.

Struggle to get excited these days for England games but that the style they play rather than anything else and yes there is a shithouse element that follows them away ........ glasshouses anyone before we get too self righteous ladies and gents!

Support Scots and Welsh if they represent GB/UK but supporting them at other times would be akin to wanting Wednesday to win because they’re from Sheffield or Leeds to win because they’re from Yorkshire to my mind.

Each to their own though.

I really fail to understand how anyone English wants England to fail.

Even more, that someone English supports Uruguay over England :-/

Simply does not compute.

I have various options but was brought up in England so it’ll always be them. It’s just a shame our system has devalued them to the point of embarrassment.

Steve, that would depend upon the date in question of said flight, I'm sorry mate, but FIFA no longer recognise the use of the "five knuckle shuffle" as proof of entitlement.

Unless you want to play for the Republic of Ireland.

I don't understand how as a supporter of a club you could despise a player one week and then the next you could cheer for him as a national team player. I could never cheer for a team with a pig playing for them for one so if one played for England I would want them to lose. I want Blades players to put their best foot forward whoever they are representing, however I don't like the vast majority of the England team as players or personalities and therefore I couldn't cheer them on. If the Blades employed a bunch of bellends who were more interested in their Louis Vuitton wash bags and whether they were turning up in a Roller or Ferrari for training I would be disenfranchised with them as well, fortunately it's the pigs with this issue and not us.

I have no interest whatsoever in ‘England’. I don’t support any international team. I’ve only found out just now that they’re playing Germany from reading on here. My heart did not skip a beat. Paint will dry; Grass will grow. I won’t watch the match. If I find out the result it will be by accident.

I’m an internationalist. I didn’t join the xenophobes in the ever more obviously ludicrous Brexit. I cannot align myself with the English flag because it has been appropriated as a symbol of prejudice and hate by ignorant, racist scum such as the EDL. I have far more in common with decent French, Italian and German people than shaven-headed, bulldog-walking, tattooed Neanderthals who hate ‘foreigners’ for no other reason than the biological accident of birth in a different place. To relate to another hot topic, my poppy is worn to remember all the men and women used as pawns in the war games of dictators and zealots, including Germans and Argentinians.

Then we come on to the “quality” of the football and the delusion that grips a nation of Car-Flag numpties for one week only before real football fans can get on with watching the proper teams. The players whose names are barely known but routinely run rings around the latest Golden Generation. Whatever happened to Stevie G and Frank, eh?

All fair enough but before you get all self righteous about it you might like to consider the fact that the French, Italians and Germans you mention all have a much larger element of right wing extremists in their country than we do in ours. The difference being the political parties representing them in those countries actually get into their parliament and in some cases have a shot at power. We just take the piss out of ours.
Knock this country all you like but don’t get myopic about other countries in your haste to decry your own. There’s lots wrong with our own country that needs changing but on the whole we’re not worse than some of our European cousins.
Oh and by the way before you say I wasn’t a Brexiteer

I'm English and will usually watch England on the tele when they're playing competitive games, but I've got no interest in friendlies.

I've been to see them "live" a few times but I'm unlikely to waste any cash on the current shower and I'm not in the least bit surprised that England crowds are tumbling along with the admission prices, as the overpaid prima donnas that have represented our country over the last 20 years or so have absolutely nothing in common with the rest of us apart from the accident of their birth right.

I spend a fair bit of time in Greece and I also like to watch them in competitive games.

That's how I've always felt about it as well. Gerrard cheated us. Shearer cheated us. I couldn't suspend my hatred of them temporarily because they were playing for the country I was born in. United come first and no-one else even registers.

Its a good job they stopped that as I would have qualified for so many, at least now they do recognise the dumping on said country and again I have the pick of them, I like to call myself multicultural or as other people call it "Nob Head-ish"

I despise their facists as much as ours. It is particularly disturbing to see the presence of the AfD in the Bundestag. I simply prefer the decent people of all other countries to English racist scum.

extrapolating that for a moment I've got a mate who's a Wednesday fan, should I not cheer him on in life? What about my brother in law who's a Derby fan? Should I want him to fail?

You're a fellow Blades fan, should I hope you do better in life than my Spurs supporting mate?

or should I act like a grown up....

There was never a club v country debate for me,it was always United first, but I did used to love International football.I've just become more cynical as I've got older supporting the national team I think.Remember being excited for Spain 82 ,Mexico 86 & Italia 90 but it all seems to be a long road of being slowly more disillusioned and disappointed year in year out and getting more angry at the increasing over hyping of the national team by the media and the advertising companies at every major tournament (with Mars being the worst culprit with their fucking "BELIEVE" campaign, which made me apocalyptically furious...it's a good job I didn't have access to firearms Mars, that's all I can say)
Suppose kids now want to watch them because they haven't seen the England team under achieve year in year out,so still have that optimism I had all those years ago before Paul Mariner,Kevin Keegan,Trevor Brooking,Maradona & the Fucking Germans (AGAIN) crushed my spirit...
That said,I'll probably still watch them in Russia and while I don't actively want them to lose (I'm not THAT fucking cynical...yet!) I would secretly enjoy the look on young faces as they crash and burn(preferably in a penalty shoot out) and they start crying bitter tears of defeat...
MUHAHAHA!!!

Unless you are a two-faced person it's not the same is it. I also have mates that support different teams, however I don't despise my mate one week and then love them the next. That is in effect what people do with international teams.

I guarantee that the same people saying they've no interest in England, will be glued to the TV come June next year.

Not me on this score, I honestly didn't know England were playing Germany until I saw it on here. I know Iceland are playing Czech Republic in the stadium near to my house and that Wales are playing France and Panama because Brooks is playing, that is the extent of my interest in this weekends football.

Not me, I can assure you. I shall be making use of unusually clear fairways and greens. Okay, and a bit of rough...

Sorry about the bit of rough, but you did choose the budget option when you signed up for Crab Dating (a division of Crab Industries).

Not me mate. But if certain people don't pay their Crab Industries invoices by then, they might be. Literally.

I'm going to switch domestic allegiances and go support Wednesday for a bit.

Laters.

Friendlies aside, you'll watch next June :-D
