In the 50s and early 60s United, like many other clubs, used to travel long-distance by train on the day of the match. So for matches in Bristol, Luton, London, etc, the queue at the Midland Station for cheap-day return tickets included supporters and a club official buying around 20 tickets. Great for us autograph hunters, but poor physical preparation for away games.

This stopped in 1967 when a shareholder said at the AGM that it was wrong for Blades players to travel to Chelsea by train for the FA Cup 5th round when other clubs hired coaches to travel to away matches

Presumably for some time it would have only been for big games that they would have travelled the day before.

So did many visiting teams but tended to book a few compartments (remember them?) in advance. Some preferred an overnight stay and used Victoria station (sadly no longer there) which had a decent hotel right next door. Paradise for an autograph hunter who could read a railway timetable.
