SUQfWD = Sheffield United's Quest for Worldwide Domination

Story from OS: LINKY

Sheffield United's push into the global marketplace has been strengthened with the appointment of sports marketing expert Mike Hall-Taylor.

Mike, who has previously worked as Marketing Director of the Jordan F1 team and Marketing Manager at Gallaher Group, managing the Benson & Hedges and Silk Cut brands across a wide range of sports sponsorships, joins the Blades as international consultant to assist in the Championships club's drive into the worldwide market.

His remit will be to significantly develop commercial opportunities and sponsorship on the back of United's international brand, and maximize the club's unique network of global contacts via its major football partnerships in China, Hungary and Australia.

Mike has already set about writing a business plan for the Chengdu Blades which recommends new ways that the club can maximize revenue streams from international partnerships. Having been recently promoted to the Chinese Super League, Chengdu Blades offers a unique opportunity to international companies looking to secure a foothold in China.

Mike said: "My remit will be to maximize Sheffield United's unique international network. The strength of the individual clubs working together is very powerful. I will be pulling together the plans and strategies for companies to take advantage of that network, and developing partnership opportunities that deliver a solid return on investment over the long term".

"This is especially important in China where football and sponsorship are still in their infancy. With the Olympics in Beijing highlighting the power of sport to the nation, now is a particularly good time to be involved with Chinese football. The key is to be seen as one of the clubs leading the way, and Chengdu Blades has already been very proactive and forward thinking in their approach to commercial opportunities. My aim is to help take them to the next stage and beyond.

"The set up at Sheffield United is fantastic. They have a very forward looking approach and a great desire to succeed on and off the pitch.
"It is great to see they are putting the resources in place to achieve that. Kevin McCabe and his senior management team have a clear vision of what they want to achieve, and it is up to us to maximize the value from the international network he has put in place."

United Plc chairman Kevin McCabe said: "Mike's appointment comes at just the right time as we become a truly global business. His expertise will help to generate further commercial revenue and maximise returns from our worldwide family of sporting interests. The opportunities for Sheffield United globally are immense and Mike will be crucial to delivering success."

Mr Hall-Taylor will be working closely with new Blades Executive Director Mike Farnan, former Managing Director of Manchester United International, who was responsible for the growth of the brand in Asia, the Middle East and Oceania. He had similar roles with Italian club AC Parma and leading Spanish club Atletico Madrid.

Can anyone else see someone sat in those posh leather chairs in the board room stroking a while cat? :D

Blades Are Seriously Threatening All Round Domination?

So McCabe's plans for Europe in 5 years did come true with buying the Hungarian team.

That's the second ex Jordan F1 employee McCabe has picked up in the past few months. Maybe he's trying to get an F1 team up and going secretly? :p

India next?

A high-level team from Sheffield United Football Club today visited the steel city to look into the possibilities of a long-term tie-up with Tata Football Academy.

Senior Sheffield United Football Club functionaries — chairman Kevin McCabe, executive director Michael Farnan, chief executive Jason Rockett and India representative of the club Christine Donaldson Badger — went around TFA to have a first hand information about the infrastructure and the prevalent mode of coaching.

The team from the United Kingdom took detailed account of the academy and its functioning from TFA officials. They also met TFA chief Sanjeeva Singh. The Sheffield officials will be making a presentation tomorrow.

The officials spoke to some of the cadets who had lined up at the entrance of the academy to welcome them with bouquets.

McCabe said they were looking forward to help the cadets with their expertise. “We are here to explore possibilities of a tie-up with the TFA. We are here to see and collect information about the functioning of the academy and are looking forward to work on a long-term basis,” he said.

According to McCabe, they would send one of their directors to watch next month’s I-League matches which is being hosted by Tata Steel.

He said there is always a possibility of developing a working relation with the TFA.

The tie-up would facilitate exchange programme. The senior Sheffield United Football Club functionary said that the tie-up would entail sending their coaches here to work with their TFA counterparts and vice versa and same would be the case with footballers.

Sheffield United Football Club has already expanded its base by setting up football coaching academies in China and Hungary.

He appreciated the facilities available at the disposal of the TFA. “There is lot of greenary in this city. We are impressed with Jamshedpur,” McCabe said.

The Sheffield United Football Club team started their day by visiting the Centre for Excellence in the morning.

TFA chief Sanjeeva Singh said besides the Sheffield United Football Club, some other English clubs are also due to visit the steel city for a probable tie-up with the academy. “Talks have been initiated. We have to work out the logistics. The Sheffield United Football Club team has been to TFA we are hoping of a positive response from them,” he added.

So what clubs to we own? anyone got a list?

Maybe he's trying to get an F1 team up and going secretly? :p

Or maybe he just knows that F1 marketers are best at fleecing the punters for every penny they own in ticket sales and merchandise...
