Not seen this mentioned anywhere and I don't suppose we need a thread every fortnight but today's gate was amazing. Nearly 21,000 for a routine league 1 match where the opposition brought around 1,000 and before another home game on Tuesday. Established league 1 team with premier league supporters

According to at least one here.

Numbers count for nothing. Look at Pompey, 18,000 every game in the Prem and their atmosphere was a country mile ahead of clubs with double or treble the numbers.

It counts for a bit when it comes to providing the money for players and how much money we can spend.

Our support is always impressive especially for League 1 and it overshadows the support of some clubs get in the Championship.

On a related note, do you think the pigs would have these home gates if they were spending their 5th season in League 1 ? me neither. Only unless they did "quid a pig" every home game.

No they wouldn't get these crowds, not a chance.

United's fanbase has grown these last few seasons despite being down here and I can't explain why. But it has for sure, despite all the odds and kicks in the teeth here we are in our 5th season in this league and our average is greater than across the city despite all the zillions supposedly invested in their club.

No doubt they'd dispute it but they would simply not be getting 20,000 plus if they were in our position.

I think hope plays a big part personally.

Despite how sh!te we've been for a long part of the time we've been down here, I still start every season with the hope that this year might be the year we finally kick on and get back up.

Never more so than when we appointed Adkins.

I know it's not fashionable to say so, but I think the club deserve some credit for this. Eg the pricing policy, particularly for juniors - even juniors who are over 6ft tall - is very welcoming.

The down side is this might contribute to the generally quiet atmosphere at games.

For lots of fans I imagine it's another form of entertainment, and they'd no more sing and cheer at a game than they would at, say, the cinema.

There's also a general passivity in audiences. Don't know if that's British reserve, for instance the most intense gigs are often watched with almost no action or interaction from the audience.

Is there a contrast here with, say, the Bundesliga?

If so, what can we learn from the Germans?

I think the pricing has certainly helped.

As for atmosphere, we're all a bit anxious because we know results like yesterday can happen.

Yes they would.

As much as I hate them, human beings are human beings.

No they wouldn't.

The year we dropped down their average jumped up from 17821 (their first year at this level) to 21336, inspired by the competition with us and a one off 38.000 attendance for their gauranteed promotion party against Wycombe.

Our attendances however have inexblicably risen from the 18702 in our first year down here, to our current level of 21402. This despite missing out to our closest and most hated rivals in circumstances that could only happen to us, and yet another two play off failures.

That is class support whichever way you look at it.

Do you seriously think think they'd be getting the crowds we do now when they can't manage it in the league above with the bigger away support, and didn't match in their first season in league one?

Yes their prices have gone up but they have had a lot of investment in the team and the club. They've been waiting years for their fairy godmother to appear and now he's here they're nowhere to be seen.

If it were us in their position I'm pretty sure we'd be getting more than 20k.

Their fabled support has always been a self perpetuating myth, passed on from father to son and then their son.

It never actually existed, not in my lifetime anyway.

It's pretty straightforward, we're challenging for promotion, they're a mid table team at best. No surprise that our support is up and theirs is down.

We'd be pulling the same crowds as them if we were treading water in the Championship.

It's been done to death a million times over on here but history has shown that statistically they have more fans than us. Not by much though.

Thought they were supposed to be challenging for promotion?

Has it really only took 2 home games for them to realise they're not?

Their first game of the season was 20247 by the way. Enthusiasm at it's highest, new owner, new players, new pitch, new scoreboard and if they had a season ticket or was a member, prices not that high.

...and statistics don't take bigger capacity for home and away fans into account to artificailly boost figures.

Having 6-7000 more seats helps the pigs average attendance as more can turn up for a one off game, due to segregation 31000 is about the best we can do as opposed to 38000, mind you it is still 48 years since the pigs last averaged over 30,000 we have managed to do it twice in less time.

But they've averaged 30,000 more times than we have.

Standing, cheap ticket pricing, ability to drink beer on the terraces, fan bars and ale sheds all around the ground and at HSV there's even pick n mix sweet stall.

The German 'back to basics' experience is the way forward..

Totally agree. If anyone ever gets the chance to see football in Germany then go. Whether it's Dortmund, St Pauli, Mönchengladbach (my team over there) it's worth it to see how football should be. I'd recommend seeing my team (bit shit this season so far though) and standing on the Nordkurve

Yeaj it quietened but I always think thats like people are busy watching game you know men & multitasking this us just me but like England group for euro 2016 there have been few games while we've been in league 1 that have got me nervous & revved up pre game only derbies of Wednesday Rotherham Barnsley. Southampton & spurs in cup the playoff games.

So unless like we have a comeback ie Gillingham 95th min winner we are far too relaxed as we feel majority pose no threat how to do get the crowd goin v likes of Southend Fleetwood Walsall

The cup runs and concomitant publicity have helped keep up interest in the club.

&, *dare I say it, so has the publicity surrounding C*ed Ev*ns.

Didn't Henry Ford say something about there being no such thing as bad publicity?

*well I didn't actually dare write it.

We are a fantastic club with amazingly loyal support considering how things have panned out for us.

Lady luck gave us the fuck off tablet decades ago. We've been cheated, shafted and kicked in the nuts numerous times since yet we keep coming.

It's time we had a board, team, and manager who can finally match our expectations and give us some joy. That's what I think anyway.

I remain hopeful that we now have at least 2 of the 3.
