When I lived in Sheffield I used to enjoy having a swift pint in a pub near the Lane and be able to chat to fellow Blades fans on a non-match day. Lots of these pubs have now closed down, but some Blades pubs survive – and they need our trade, especially on non-match days.So get supping!

Anyway here’s a list of traditional Blades pubs near the Lane that are still open. Some of them have been there before the Blades existed. Many of these pubs will have hosted Blades fans for over a century, returning from seeing us winning the cup final or becoming champions of England. These pubs are a piece of Blades history and need our support.

The Cricketers, Bramall Lane

After the sad demise of the Sportsman this is probably the Bladiest Blades pub of them all. Closest pub to the ground and run by a Blade. Interesting Blades memorabilia on the walls

The Railway, Bramall Lane

Ditto, always been there. Used to run coaches to away games. At one point it was so popular on match days that you needed a “Railway card” to get in (I had one). Recently had a bit of a facelift. Small and cozy with a popular beer yard.

The Old Crown, London Rd

I’ve been down to the Old Crown a couple of times recently and it's much better than it was - great live music, good pool table, nice beer garden, interesting Sheffield-related pictures and album covers on the wall. There’s a big Blades crest in the main room

The Sheaf, Bramall Lane

Not been in here for ages but it’s always packed on match days. I once saw a drunken Vinnie Jones stand on the bar and get his knob out in here. Maybe there ought to be a plaque.

The Standard, St Mary’s Gate

Not been in her for ages either, but a traditional watering hole for those who walk to the Lane from the train station

The Clubhouse, London Rd

Originally a staunch Blades pub known as the Hermitage, more recently the Scholar. It used to be packed on match days, along with the now-vanished Lansdowne opposite. Decent pub. Last I heard it was run by a Canadian, who faced major protests when he tried to put up some kind of pig symbol on the wall.

Cremourne, London Rd

Traditionally a Blades pub, this now appeals to a more student / alternative crowd but still gets busy on match days. Used to be my local when I lived on Woodhead Rd in the 80’s – it was a very rough place back then.

Golden Lion, Alderson Rd

Decent enough pub, with a new beer garden. Gets packed after home matches. I slipped on their wet wooden decking after the Charlton game and managed to cut my hand open but still managed not to spill my pint

Lord Nelson aka Fanny’s Arundel St (off Arundel Gate)

Great little place full of characters. If you’re a certain age you might encounter some familiar Blades characters from the past in here. Good place to be on the piss all day.

There are others that deserve an honorary mention. Barry’s on London Rd used to be a Blades pub (forget the name) and some Blades still sup in there. Likewise the Beer Engine on Cemetery Rd. There’s the Albion and the Barrel on London Rd too, but I’m not sure if either of those are open these days.

Maybe I’ve missed some out, I dunno. There are also other traditional Blades pubs further away from the Lane, like the Penny Black. New places have sprung up too, like the bars at the Copthorne and in the JSS, and the Sentinel on Shoreham St which gets full of Blades on match days. Any others?

not far from me Dkc, abbeydale rd, just past the royal hotel that was.
In there for the 1st, down to cremorne for number 2, then the railway.
Depending on the time, either cricks or sportsman. Happy days.
Oh forgot, if I was meeting the cromford street mob, it would be the Truro.

Cricks always has a special place in my heart. Only place I can still get a Flashing Blade fanzine (It ceases publication in 2 years time so appreciate it while you can).

Only went in Sheaf once. The barmaid/landlady/whatever was a fucking ignorant bastard who didn't say a word for the entire transaction, not even to quote the price of the pint. Just held her hand out with a face like a slapped arse. So fuck her and fuck the Sheaf basically.

Barry's used to be the Pheasant. A mate of mine worked behind the bar there for a while so it was well easy to get served even when packed out on matchdays :)

Think the Barrel is still open.

Used to start matchdays down Chezzy road myself when I lived in Meersbrook, The Crown, White Lion, The Sheaf, The Shakespeare are not officially Blades pubs but always pulled plenty in. The Red Lion was the one down there I was least keen on yet funnily enough was the only one (or so I was told) with hardcore Blades links; apparently once had a landlord in the BBC. Not sure if this was true?

That's right, the Pheasant. And if the Barrel is still open that needs to be on the list.

This thread goes a long way explaining why most Blades are pissheads. I cannot for the life of me recall another football ground with this selection of pubs around the ground, and that's even before you venture half a mile up town. No wonder the pigs are such a bunch of miserable fuckers in comparison.

Played football for the white lion. David tollerfield the landlord at the time, his son then took over the red lion next door at the same time.
He was a blade, but definitely not BBC. That was late 70s early 80s.

Went to the Railway for the first time ever yesterday for a couple of pre game pints. Was supposed to pick up tix and then Ken Jnr from station but it took me over 2.5 hours to get from Stratford so Ken Jnr had to walk to the Lane and get the tix and get in the queue for the beers.

Usually go to the Cremorne cos I like my Kelham Best treat before a game.

Thought the beer wasn't too great in the Railway. Had a Lynch Pin and a Crystal Gold. Neither seemed to be kept that well.

Will be back to the Cremorne pre Cov :)

I dare say I got the embelished version when I was told about it mate. Come to think of it there was a time that whenever Blades pubs got mentioned, talk of the BBC inevitably followed whether true or not.

Tramway on London Rd was virtually owned by the BBC back in the day.

I'd say around half of the pubs surrounding the Lane that were open back in the 80's have now closed.

The Crown has very recently got a new landlord in and he's a Blade through and through . It's well worth a visit .

The Barrel gets very busy and very lively on a match day .

I used to use the Pheasant a lot but I haven't been in there since it changed to Barry ' s . From what I can gather the owner/landlord doesn't have much time for football fans .

The Cricketers always used to be on my pre - match list of hostelries but I've not been in for a couple of years now .

London Road is getting better and better for a beer now which is great news after it really went down pan a few years ago . It'll probably never reach the heights that it did in the 80 's and 90 's but it's already a much better place than it was recently .

I've done all of the pubs around the ground so many times now I feel they are my ' locals '

The Sheaf on Bramall lane is fucking awful, Smoothflow, Strongbow,Fosters and Carling is your choice, even the carpark stinks like an Amsterdam weed cafe. I have been going in the Standard lately got a good choice of ales which should suit everyone even the Carling drinking chavs.

Not just football fans, he doesn't have much time for anyone! He's a character though is Barry

The Sheldon was another lively pub on match days.

Warnock used to have the occasional half in there. More recently Brayford has been spotted in the Cremourne, and Leon Clark in the Clubhouse

As a kid, Ma dad used to take me into the crown, tramway (still remember man it'd smashing it up), the Sheldon and cricks.

Don't go to anywhere near as many matches as I'd like now, however I'm taking ma dad and my to boys to the coventry match, so might have to go and show my boys how it used to be.

Also remember bbc showing me how to play cards (there way) when I was about 8.

Great memories.

A Jamaican lady friend of the wife was a sound cook did mutton and rice to die for, and her dumplings were huge as well :D
Will try his mutton curry next time.

That was the Jerk Chicken
Washed down with a tropical fruit punch.

I understand he has a Sexy Juice but
a) haven't got a clue what that is
b) Weren't offered any
c) Foxy knows what it is

I sometimes get the bus back to the city centre there, just the smell get you drooling like a bulldog.

Salutation Inn, Attercliffe - good little Blades pub, knocked down a good few years ago now. But more seriously, what happened to the Manor at Manor Top? My late Uncle Cyril kept that pub in the 70s. Ironically, he was a Wednesdayite, which may explain why he hated the customers so much. Great place for a punch-up on Saturday nights. Haven't been up there for years and can't find any sign of it online.

Try this for size, SEB
Where Ken Jnr and I ate last night.
King Kev at Carribean Spice on London Road.
Just look at his dumplings :)

Notice Saltfish fritters on the board, Ken. The St Lucian version, called fishcakes by them, is one of my favourites. Dumplings aren't bad, but not as good as Mrs SEB, and they call them bakes, though they are made the same way.

Forgot to mention the Jack in the Box at Hackenthorpe. Lots of Blades got moved out there from Attercliffe in the 60s. My Uncle Jack liked this pub on a match day, partly because of the name which he believed was some sort of sign that he should drink there. My Uncle Fred (the one who was a mate of Blades legend Fred Furniss) still lives in Hackenthorpe but the Jack pub, like my Uncle Jack, is sadly no longer with us.
