Long version:

The thing that annoys me is that it is used as an instant dismissal of someone's opinion.

"I don't like X player"

is met with

"I don't have to listen to you because you're a knocker"

and

"I really like Z player"

is similarly greeted with

"Clapper! You're so easily pleased".

That isn't a discussion. It isn't a transfer of ideas whereby people can find common ground. It is instantly Us v. Them.

Some people are always going to be a bit down on United. But instead of writing off everything they have to say by fitting it into some neat little label, why don't you read what they say and discuss why you think their opinion is misguided?

And some people refuse to let things get to them. But instead of writing off everything they say by accusing them of being mentally inferior, why not calmly and rationally explain your point of view?

Many people say that they use the labels to try and be funny. But to me it isn't funny "haha"... it's funny in the way that you're trying to wind people up and eventually, those people are going to lose their rag. If people want to fish and antagonise, I would kindly ask that they do it elsewhere.

If people want to poke gentle fun from a place of genuine camaraderie, then bring it on :)

Short version:

It's often not what you say that can wind people up, it's how you say it.

i SAID FINAL WORD LINZ

only joking:) you are quite right of course

I cant believe that so many have fallen into Olle's trap ;)

Linz, do you dish out infractions to those that take the bait from Olle?

Whilst the debates have got slightly out of hand I cannot for the life of me find a reason why someone should stop posting!
Because elements on here have strong opinions either way surely thats the point of debate.
Some people are always Ultra Positive whilst others Ultra Negative - most of us generally fall between the two!
But, as Blades we are passionate, very passionate about our team, our club
We are the ones that are down after every defeat, analyse every dropped point, on an absolute high after every win but never not bothered!
But we do have strong views and sometimes are at a loss that people following the same team have diametrically opposite views to one another!
I have strong opinions:
For example
Montgomery lacks most of the basic skills to be a truly effective professional footballer - my opinion and I find it difficult to understand why anyone should question that point
But , whilst I hold that view it doesn't stop me recognising that Montgomery tries to cover that lack of skill by giving 100% effort every time he puts a blades shirt on !
But, no matter how much running or effort Montgomery gives will never make up the shortfall as a complete 'footballer'.
But, my point is that all people will always not share my views ok that what debate is about!
And on the other side of the coin, no amount of people telling me that Montgomery is a footballing genius will change my view either
So, status quo we agree to differ
All Blades are different personalities, different opinions with one common goal - to see the Blades on the road to succes
We just have differnt views and different ways of getting there !
Good luck Speedo Up the Blades

Now you've done it (i think deliberetly) Couldn't you have picked a different example? So............ Monty Monty Monty

Whats wrong with Status Quo? so here we are and here we are and here we go Rockin all over the world.

I don't want anyone to stop posting... so long as they are capable of posting in the spirit we try to encourage :)

And infractions are doled out for all instances of personal abuse. If someone feels that they are being wound up, I would expect them to contact either Foxy or myself and not take the matter into their own hands. They only end up feeling more aggrieved when they get an infraction.

But in here perhaps lies one of the underlying issues. The "debates" carried on here are by definition vitually pointless as no matter how passionately made, they are extremely unlikely to actually influence anything that happens at BDTBL. In that sense football fora are more like chat rooms between people sharing a common interest, than debating chambers discussing matters of great importance.

IMO it's a matter of recognising this reality - then making posts in this context. There's little point in starting contensious threads and heated debates that can achieve no positive changes, but have a far greater chance of upsetting and offending fellow Blades.

If people are genuinely so wound up they feel the need to vent their spleen, then the people to tell aren't on here - they're at Bramall Lane. Ranting on here is little more than being a keyboard warrior - and the "atmophere" of the Forum has suffered as a result IMO. Discussion and differing opinions are fine - heated debate should be with the Club where it just might make a difference.

The key question for the forum is whether this is a place for emotional ranting and meaningless hot air - or a place for fans to share opinions and feelings in a more considered way that helps build more solid support for the team. It seems to me, we don't really have a clear answer to this at the mo.

WUMS's or not, none of it made for particularly interesting reading

Over the last couple of weeks this forums been about as entertaining as botulism.

it was simply because it was an international break week, we have a new manager and we've only played a handfull of games in the new season.. there was nowt to talk about:p
