Bit out of touch with goings on with the academy and fringe players these days.

Can those of you that take a keen interest in all levels of football at the Lane post a few words about players at the academy or on the verge of the first team that you feel are worth keeping an eye out for?

For no reason other than my curiosity.

I know about the ones that made the breakthrough last season as I managed to get to a handful of games, so just some of the more obscure, less 'well known' youngsters please.

From what I believe from a parent of a team mate, Semple who is a left sided CB and Gilmour who is a left sided centre midfielder but I am sure people who will have seen them can give a more balanced opinion of them both

Callum Semple is a left sided centre back. 17 years old. Strong lad, 6ft 1" .... excellent passing range and good in the air. I believe now with the first team but would imagine playing under 21s and maybe some bench appearances this season. Should be featuring in the first team pre season games as the papers keep name checking him.

Harvey Gilmoor is a left footed centre mid.17 years old, looks for the ball and works endlessly for the team. great engine and just keeps the ball moving. loves a good strong tackle. i think training with first team also.

Jordan Hallam is a number 10 who scored 29 goals for the youth team. 17 years old, quite slight so needs to fill out. free kick specialist and a really clever player.

There is also Alex Brown a left back, Tom Charlesworth a right back and Joe Cummings a centre back. All played for 21s last season and will probs do the same next season.

All of this group have been with the club since 7 years old i have been told

Watched them with 18s and 21s and it seems releasing the older u21s players last season was a plan to push this group through quicker.

Heard a while back that Ian Breckin's son is in our academy and is considered an absolute world beater within his age bracket. Think he's about 13-14 so a while to go yet (if he's still here).

On Alan Bigg's latest show the incredible pace of Kirmani Smith was mentioned. Anyone seen him?

A freekick specialist is something we've been missing!
It is but isn't either Duffy or Hussey one too? I think that was something Wilder wanted to address early. You can never have too many though.

Brecks went to Manchester City at the start of last season.

He'll be U13s this coming season.

He was. Obviously, United were very disappointed to see him go, but there is little we could do about it.
What are his parents thinking of..... Another excellent prospect ( only a prospect) lost in the biggest black hole of academy football.

That of Man City.... The worst move any parent can make....... Mind you, looks good down the pub that your lad is at Man City.

The lure from the big clubs is ridiculous these days.

A friend of mine was telling me about a 7 or 8 year old kid who plays in the same team as her son.

He's being courted by Man City, Manure, United, Barnsley, Huddersfield, Leeds, Leicester. As a result, the team have been for days out at the Kingpower, Etihad, Carrington etc. been given signed shirts, met the players etc. Apparently City are even offering to put the lad through private school, buy a house for the family in Manchester etc. Hard for parents to turn all that down.

Can we make this thread private please to keep it away from prying Premiership eyes.

I don't think that's uncommon among prem clubs, I remember a lad who I played against for school about 10 years ago who was in our academy, ended up in Blackburn's academy after they apparently payed to move his family over. Last saw his name pop up on Soccer Saturday scoring for Morton (name escapes me now!)

Been going on for years.

A certain Chris Wilder left Sheffield at 14 in 1982 to go Southampton, where McMenemy and Keegan were. He'd been courted by United, Barnsley and the pigs. Him and family upped sticks and went South. Obviously don't know what if any financials were involved (probably brown paper bags in those days).

Its football and when players earn the price of a bloody good house in a week it's well worth the gamble for clubs.

SInce the Academy started, we have had dozens of youngsters poached, and to the best of my knowledge, not one has `made it` with the club they have joined.

The first 2 I was told about around 4 years ago were Jordan Preston & Reece Hands, poached by Blackburn Rovers, both have had spells in Non league and Scotland, but nowhere near the Rovers first team.

If i was a scout of another club i mighy also be tempted to go onto other clubs websites ans ask who is the next best young lads who mighy come good....would make a scouts life for easier if regular watches of the blades youth team all said x y and z. Strangely enough they would be the ones id start focussing on in my scouting work for my club. Just a thought.

If I were a scout responsible for youth players I'd already know who our good players were. I'd have watched them last season. Same with the pigs, dingles, millers etc. I'd have watched them several times.

Many years ago during a Flashing Blade interview someone at the club (I forget who) quoted Wilder - who was in his second spell with us at the time - as saying that United's youth set up was pathetic when he was a kid, which I assume was another reason not to come to us. Southampton were of course a top six side in those days too, so there was that sort of pull, even before brown envelopes come into the equation.

Not Reece Hands is it? I played against him, good player

They are all absolutely fantastic. Every one of them, even the under 9s, should be given an extended run in the first team. Ok, the keeper would need stilts but it's a small price to pay.

This club is stifling our pre-pubescent talent and will regret it when they all come back and embarrass us with other clubs in 12 years time.

Reece is a great lad ,good friend of my eldest ,played for me a few times at Kivo but was way out in front of the others. Good old Dinno lad.

Ben Whiteman could be good, played a few games as Centre Mid under Adkins, not many good chances for him to show his ability though.
