It's funny though - this deep, sorrowful concern expressed just a week or two back for lower division clubs having to play too many games & for fans of those clubs inconveniently having to travel away for night games... & then they go and expand this thoroughly unloved competition, forcing sides into the additional commitment of having to play a 3-game midweek group stage...

Meaningless to ourselves, yes, but what about other L1 and L2 clubs who actually go for it in this competition? Those who get a proper day at Wembley for their troubles if they reach the final?

What a disrespect to those clubs whose pros will now have to play a bunch of kids to progress. I also wouldn't be surprised if some of these kids earned more than their League 2 professional opponents.

The principle is an insult to lower league teams, and a disgrace. There is no way that any club should be required to put forward a first team to play against another club's academy team in a competitive match. If this isn't firmly rejected by fans - by boycotts, protests, and any other means of getting our voice heard - then it will be extended to 'selected' academy teams playing in the football league in a few years time.

I don't care whether we're in the lower divisions then or not - the principle is completely wrong, both in the "EFL Trophy" and in the Football League itself.

If I'm reading it right and it's the top 16 U21 teams from the U21 'prem. league' that would include Reading.

Reading have a good chance of being relegated next season and with the groups being regional theres a very real possibility of Reading v Reading U21's being a 'competitive' fixture...

And if that's not bad enough we'd either get Derby or Middlesbrough U21s. Yay. Go team football.

I'd rather they just scrapped the competition altogether. There's no need for it.

But they're flying a flag. If there's outrage, protests, boycotts, etc, it'll be a one season experiment and we'll hear no more about it (for a while at least, until they think it's worth testing the water again). If it all goes through relatively quietly as they hope (note the timing of the announcement) the academy teams will be in the football league within 3 years.

This is the hard bit for them - establishing the principle. Once they've got away with that, the next step is relatively straight-forward. At this stage they rely upon people thinking 'well, it's only a tin-pot trophy anyway', whereas in reality it is the critical moment where we either fight it, or meekly give up. If they can get away with this, they're home and dry.
