Board / Club

Kevin McCabe
McCabe has been more prominent in his involvement this year and I have seen him at more games than he has missed. He had to make another changed and decided to axe Adkins after a shocking season. Some felt it was getting ridiculous with us changing manager every season but McCabe was determined not to mess around and felt any continuity would not see us changing under Adkins. He went back to basics with a more United type appointment in Wilder with the sole aim to unite the club on and off the field. He knew that he had got so many of the previous appointments wrong but this time he has got it right. McCabe and the board gave him enough finances to be able to back Wilder too. Whilst we lost young talent like Adams, Ramsdale and Calvert Lewin, not of these were seen as shoe ins to start and the present was seen as far more of a priority as we had to get out of this league. McCabe was able to ensure Wilder could bring in players that cost money with O’Connell, Moore, Clarke, Hanson and Carruthers to name a few. Others such as Duffy, Fleck came in and would not have been on cheap wages. There had been a lot leave but equally the board backed him.

McCabe was there at all the crucial last few games and great to see him being applauded and cheered in the car park after the Northampton win; after so much stick he has had. He was also there at the town hall and Wilder was determined he got the acclaim from the fans too. I admit at times I have wanted him to move on due to the fact he has not really pushed the boat out massively to get us out of this division but also due to the number of awful managerial appointments that he simply kept getting wrong. However, the alternatives to him not being there were limited as not sure anyone could buy him out and I still feel he does care about the club. The fact he is still trying to find more investment suggests his family are not going to put in as much as they have before and you sense this is the time we need his partner in running the club to step up to the plate.

The one most recent development is the Ched Evans signing and McCabe and the club will get some criticism for sanctioning this. Football wise it is up to Wilder and if he thinks he can improve the squad then fine but you do wonder whether it may cause some tension and lead to some difficult splits on the terraces. It is the one time we have been United but this could be a potential spanner in the works. Is it a risk the club needed to take? It is not as if he scored prolifically at this level before or even for Chesterfield. Suppose we have to trust Wilder and hope he is the principle reason behind it and now all this talk about reneged contract offers etc or payments made earlier in the year to cash strapped Chesterfield. 500K is ridiculous for a league one player who barely played or scored so you hope that is just speculation and it is more of a nominal fee.

Prince HRH Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has been conspicuous by his absence as he continues to be involved in Saudi Arabian politics and other matters back in his homeland. He did tweet after the promotion but has not even been over too Sheffield as far as I am aware for a good few years until his surprise appearance on the field when he came on with McCave with the trophy after the final game. The fact he was there I am home was a telling sign. He has let his advisors do most of the running/involvement with the McCabes and the other board members. Now we are up you hope his interest will be piqued and he can now start to invest more and see us take a further upward curve. The talk of him putting more in when we move up to the next level has only been rumours but you hope it is true. You look at the money spent at the likes of our S6 rivals and you see what we might need to do to get out of the league. However, you see the likes of Huddersfield and Reading and realise we may not have to go mad. Just some sensible recruitment but we will need some level of investment to be anywhere near the top of the league and the current squad would not be good enough to challenge.

Jim Phipps had left at the end of the previous season as Adkins moved on and the reshuffle started in earnest. He seemed to leave in not exactly the best of terms although his words since suggest how much he still loves the club. He had said how he wanted to be there to join the celebrations. To my knowledge he is now nothing to do with the club officially.

Selahattain Baki Baki is another one who we heard a lot from on Social Media in connection to United and continues to tweet about the club. Not sure if he is that involved in the day to day running of the club in terms of attending board meetings but was seen on the final day partaking in the celebrations and also around the town hall.

The rest of the board consists of McCabe’s sons Scott McCabe and Simon McCabe are still there. As is Stephen Bettis . All three are part of McCabe’s Scarborough Group. I am unsure how involved these are but have seen more of them around than before and at the later games Scott (must admit do get them mixed up) was always there. McCabe may be looking to pass on the baton more with his age. Martin Green has run Redtooth a gaming company, based in Barlborough and he now oversees the board’s non footballing decisions as another vice chairman. McCabe appointed Tareq Hawasli to the board but we have heard little from him. Not sure he is even connected to the Prince. His CV suggests he has industry experience extends from real estate to energy (including oil, natural gas and alternative energy), IT, healthcare and commodities coupled with extensive experience with both conventional and Shariah compliant financial structures.

The technical football board I am unsure who is on it but I am guessing it involves the below who were all part of the restructuring over the last few years.

David Green heads up a Construction firm based in Renishaw; Green Pilin and now has responsibility for Football Operations. We have Carl Shieber who oversees player contract negotiations and Wilder has alluded to his role being important too. The board generally do seem more together. We have seen and heard less of them (Phipps had been the mouthpiece and did his best to communicate but sometimes it maybe did not work) but when you are winning you do not need to hear much from them.

We have then the directors of Blades Leisure which consists of the McCabe’s, the Prince, Hawasli, Jeremy Tutton and Eyad Jubair . Yes, I have never heard of him either! This section is more around the governance of the assets and the business side outside of the football club I guess?

Dave McCarthy is involved still as Operations Director and we also have Paul Reeves as the head of marketing.

We got a bit bigger sponsorship deal with Alpharooms (and late rooms involved also) and this lasts for a further two seasons and we have another year on our current kit deal with Adidas. If we do well next season then we can get more sponsors on board and bigger income as a result. It certainly helps us being in the higher division. The home kit was really nice this season. Hope we can get an equally nice one for the league above. Adidas is good quality kits but sometimes you get identikit ones that are certain styles that lots of teams have. So, you can lose some individuality. Was not so keen on the away kit (colours – orange with black?) but it was a lucky kit. Much prefer our more traditional away kit colours of yellow or white to be honest.

In terms of the ticket office, at times things could still be better but I have to say overall they have done a great job and to cope with all the away ticket demand, the last home games, season tickets, beam back and Kell Brook and keep dealing with punters both in person and online/telephone was a credit to them as they all ended up working very long hours.

To repeat comments from last season there are some sterling people behind the scenes such as Mick Rooker and John Garrett ; supporters’ liaison officer, always seems to do a decent job behind the scenes and always spoke well when on the radio or at forums. They are the unsung heroes but are the heart and soul of the club; clearly loving the club and working 24/7 some weeks to ensure fans are happy. Gary Sinclair continues to be the voice of the Blades and although he does like the sound of his own voice a bit too much, he clearly loves the club and this is clear in what he does.

Mark Todd continues to do a sterling job with the Sheffield United community foundation and they seem very visible around the city and beyond in terms of the educational and community stuff. My own son attends the camps quite a bit and the people who do the coaching and organising are brilliant with the kids. The camps are great value too and my little un is always raving about them when he comes home.

We also have various old Blades involved in the PR side and match day corporate stuff such as Kevin Gage, Ted Hemsley, Carl Bradshaw etc.

As an aside the two groundsmen; Glenn Nortcliffe and Kelly Barrowclough have been able to now have something to work with. The new Desso pitch saw a great deal of money spent on it after years of having a poor surface and after a rocky start (it looked poor at the start of its first season) it bedded down and was great. I have never seen it look so good so late in the season. Indeed, for the whole of the season it was like a snooker baize and was great to see. Helped us with our passing game and made sure that there were never any chance of postponements either. We deservedly won the pitch of the year for the division.

Grade B+ (Last season E-)

Next season

The board has changed in some of the personnel but seems more settled now than it has for a while. There is still talk about more investment from overseas and rumours from Asia and other places come and go. I think McCabe wants more money pumped in and the deals to sponsor the South Stand from Hualing and other link ups with China sees the influence from this part of the world growing. I said a year ago if we did not go up that the Prince and his advisors would walk as their interest in this ‘play thing’ would disappear after 3 years+. Well we got up and now I cannot see them walking away from this upward trajectory. I think and hope he can now put more money in. We do not need to spend a fortune but even say 10 million on 3 or 4 players would still not be a massive outlay when you look at Wednesday (17 million was it on Rhodes and Reach plus astronomical wages for Fletcher, Hooper etc) and Villa (signing players around 7-10 million mark, Kodja, Hogan etc) for instance. Still others have finished higher on less outlay and it is not all about spending money.

Off the field; the ground still looks good and remains one of the best outside the top flight. Yes, they could make changes to the Kop and other aspects but you feel that might be a few years away although planning permission for student flats at the back of the Kop and also for another set of properties near the Hotel with a shop underneath has been put in place. You sense if they keep moving forward the actual ground developments could happen. It would be great to flatten the Kop and the poorly constructed corner stand and do it all from scratch and then the ground would look superb.

Fair play for the club for the superb pricing structure of the season tickets and it seems from the comments Martin Green made in early April that United had already surpassed last season’s 13,000 figure. It is a sure sign that we will have crowds of around 23-25,000 minimum next season by the time all sales have been completed and will probably rival or top our rivals from S6 depending on how their season finishes up.

It will be a vital summer and few years to see how much the board really want to get us back up there. It took the likes of Leeds, Wednesday and others 3 or 4 years to even be near the top end of the league. Reality says it could be similar for us but that depends on whether we invest. Those clubs did not have a great deal of funds first few years and Wednesday only started splashing the cash when Chansiri came in. If the Prince really wants it (Premier League) then we will see this next summer. The main thing is we do not go back down and at the very least have to consolidate next season. Love for more but as it stands after 6 years out, I would take middle or just below next season. There are some fans that might say 4th bottom is still not the worst scenario but no offence to other clubs but we should be aiming much higher and have better standards than that with the fanbase and potential.

Managerial team/Coaches

Chris Wilder What a job he has done. I could write so much about the turnaround in attitude, work ethic, organisation, team spirit, level of football, discipline and the positivity he has brought in. However, in simple terms he has changed the side and club around from losers to winners. In 12 months! He made bold changes in getting rid of a lot of the deadwood and brought in some of his own but even though we made a slow start he realised he made mistakes early. Unlike Adkins and Clough that would be stubborn and not admit mistakes; he did. He took out Long, he took out Clarke/Hussey (his own signings) and changed the formation till it suited us. He brought in more players and changed the side when he felt fit. He did not have favourites and some of his subs were out of the blue but often worked. He was not swayed by fans or anyone else but when he did things he told us why he did them, both good and bad. He was so honest, recognising when we had been beaten on the few occasions we had and what we did wrong. He did the same with wins praising us and talking us up. He never hung the players out to to dry individually but treated them the same win or lose as a group. His interviews and interaction with the media was totally different to that of Adkins. He just said it how it was. There was no business speak or clichés. He summed it up to me when he came in and said that running around and putting effort in was a given. He expected that. That would happen. The other stuff would then follow.

I was not sure what to expect in type of football given he had quite a mixed reputation for style from Halifax, Oxford and Northampton. In the latter job, it was positive football but the side did get it forward quick but relied on a high press and then getting the ball back. We saw this from the off and we managed to keep this going for long periods of the season. Teams lost the ball regularly and when we got it back we were better so kept it longer. What surprised me most though was the level of football. We played some superb stuff with the midfield in particular pinging it about and some lovely one touch stuff. Fleck, Coutts and Duffy were a joy to watch at time and if anything, we over passed but when we got it right, boy did we get it right. We got some solidity in the side with Moore and Ebanks Landell and also had the steady Wright and either by luck or clever planning fell into this new 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 as it really was; formation. Freeman thrived and was a major threat all season down the right. Teams could not contain him. He popped up all over the place. Whilst Clarke did not quite work as he had a lot of injuries and his partnership with Sharp did not click, we had a few players who did their jobs up top with the prolific Billy. Done did ok early and then Lavery also came in and weighed in with some goals. Hanson eventually came in to do what we thought Clarke would do but the latter also contributed later on. It was a real team ethic with somebody like Basham embodying everything about the season. He started slowly but got better and better and wherever he played was a colossus as we looked so determined not to let it slip.

Wilder kept driving them on and you never felt they would let up. Only the past and what has happened to this club before nagged away at you. Wilder made sure that not disasters would fall on the side and they just kept going. Others fell away but after going top around New Year, other than one little poor run, we never let up. You sensed after that late winner at London Road, that we were going up and after this we never looked back really. The team got stronger and stronger as the season went on.

As I say I could eulogise about the job he has done for pages and pages but this summary will see various pieces of credit given to him as players are analysed etc. It clearly meant so much for him. The celebrations at Sixfields and then back at the Lane where he led the singing summed it up and he looked emotional. This continued with scenes at various away games and on social media as he always seemed to be enjoying a beer but rightly milked every celebration. He really came to the fore on the bus tour and he had certainly had a few. He led the singing and his interview we discussed imaging being on the town hall every time he went for his haircut around the corner. His stock amongst supporters will never be higher. The fans loved him chanting the old chants and his love for the city and his club oozed out on that bus/balcony.

He is a fan in every way and going from ball boy to player to manager and then getting promotion is the ultimate really. He is just a fan that is a bloody good manager and for once every fan can actually sit back and think ‘You know what we will leave him to it; he knows what he is doing and is nearly always right!’ That says it all.

Grade A+

Alan Knill came in as assistant to Wilder. He too deserves so much credit. He has been with Wilder for a while and was actually the manager at Bury (Wilder his number two) but now seems to have settled into a coaching role and enjoys that with Wilder leading the way. Wilder clearly has so much respect for him and relies on his input massively. His job has also been superb in helping the way the side sets up, doing the little bits of pieces that probably goes unnoticed and making sure we are prepared for opponents. Clearly seems a real proper football guy and his attention to detail has been really important this year.

Defensively he is seen as a bit of an expert; having played at the back himself (see the video online – Blades History on Youtube where him and Chris Coleman are torn apart for Swansea v Deane and Agana!). We certainly have been better organised and the whole line is more organised back there. We have fewer gaps between players and the departments of the side are much closer together. It just seems a more coherent side. Everybody knows their job and when one loses it, others cover.

Some lovely set plays set up, such as the goals at Scunny when Basham scored and the one at Charlton when Duffy got in. Also, quick free kicks such as the one at Bradford when Sharp scored. We have had better variety on corners too and scored a fair few from there. At times the actual in play crossing could improve but set plays generally have just been much improved at both ends. We score more from them and concede less. Knill will continue to be an important figure moving forward and needs to be recognised how important he is in the management team. I am sure the board realise this. Got a great ovation at MK and Chesterfield games to recognise his efforts and on the town hall.

Luke Prestridge was brought in as head of Sports Science. Wilder seemed as keen to get him across from Northampton as Knill. Whatever he has done it has worked. We have had less injuries, seem fitter, finish games stronger, start games better and just look much sharper. We do not have players running out of gas as much and the improvement in fitness levels of people like Coutts and Freeman has been a real turn around. For the first time in a while we are actually outworking teams by running (skill of course big factor!) and have won so many 50/50’s loose balls which is down to desire of course but also down to being able to get there quicker and be better prepared before and during games. Another who is not mentioned much but deserves big credit. We have simply hardly had any big injuries (Clarke had ups and downs all season, Chapman’s was for a while – freak injury in training and then also Lavery at the end of the season – down to the awful pitch at Oldham I feel; but that is it) and kept important people fit and fresh. Wilder his rotated at times and maybe that is down to advice from these back-room guys and whilst we do not always agree that he has not played same team every week even after wins; it has ultimately paid off.

Darren Ward is the keeping coach and has been here since Clough and Adkins – he has been retained and was mentioned by Wilder quite a bit. Another local lad (Worksop) and a Blade I think, he has done a good job with some of the younger keepers coming through but also had to be credited for number of clean sheets that Moore has had this season also. He has been unemployed for long periods so vital he is kept on his toes for when that key save is needed.

Academy / Development side

The season has been successful in terms of results for the u23’s and u’18’s with long winning runs and the u18’s winning their league and getting to the final of the playoffs despite many playing for the u23’s too and playing quite a few games a week. Some players were playing successfully for both teams in these runs. Both teams had players playing a lot younger than many of their respective opponents. Despite a lot of talk over our Academy and players coming through, we have not really had production you would have hoped for in recent years though but this season it was unlikely he would put many in and only Brooks and Ramsdale have had fleeting games away from the Checkatrade where likes of Hallam, Slater and others got a chance also. Of course, Long and Maguire came through 4 or 5 years ago. Reed, Calvert Lewin and Whiteman have been ok but not really stood out and made first team place their own in a poor League One. So many others have come and gone. It seems we have a decent crop at the moment. Unsure if some will be good enough especially now we are in the Championship but likes of Brooks, Whiteman (still got a chance, Semple, Mallon are names to look out for in coming years.

I have enjoyed watching some of the younger sides this year and they have played similar formations and also tried to get it down and play. We have beaten much older sides at u23 level and this group like the first team has a real togetherness. A few may not be retained but most will still be around next year as they are quite young. Be interesting to see if any of those above can make a case to get in and around the first team squad regularly especially with the step up in quality.

It seems Travis Binnion now runs most things down at the Academy in terms of heading up the coaching side since Nick Cox moved onto Manchester United. Derek Geary came in to take over the u18’s in terms of match to match coaching and has done a sterling job as they have won their league quite easily.

With the u23/u18’s; we had Binnion and the more experienced John Dungworth who was here under Bassett 25 years ago; seemingly the main coaches for the u23 sides.

Mick Wadsworth was also involved in the coaching this season for various age groups.

Paul Mitchell
is the chief scout brought in by Wilder after Turnbull (now back at Scunthorpe) did not hang about very long after Wilder left; or rather he was sacked. Mitchell had left his role at Chesterfield and having known Wilder for some time seemed the obvious replacement. He has been able to help us identify some good lower league players and most of our signings have come off this past 12 months. Mitchell and his team have also seen us prepared better for opponents as tactically we have rarely come up wanting. Will be a big summer as now we may need to go shopping a bit higher up but also still need to get those lower league gems. Clubs still ask for sizeable fees for such players (look at Bogle with Wigan) so important if we go for a few from League One/Two we get them right. Higher up the league getting those not good enough for the Prem will be the other type of signings you expect. We will need to bring in quite a few players to add to the quality so be interesting to see who he helps identify.

Next season

Wilder and his team deserve longer contracts but the reality is contracts are not really worth much. The biggest thing we have in our favour is Wilder’s love for the Blades. He is more a United fan and man than Warnock ever was from what I have seen so far. Wilder cares so much about the club and whilst Warnock will say the same, I felt Neil Warnock cared first and foremost about Neil Warnock. So it would take something ridiculous for Wilder to leave and have to be a Premier League club offering a huge wage. I am not sure Wilder will get that sort of offer which is a surprise when you look at how well the likes of Dyche and Howe have done.

Wilder has not managed at this level but then he had not managed at League One! However, it will be a step up for him. He regularly out tactic-ed managers last season and knew the division and lower leagues inside out. We now face better quality coaching and managers of course. His work ethic and knowledge of the game lends me to believe he can acquit himself very well and probably needs this step up after effectively cake walking to the two lower leagues in consecutive seasons. His desire and passion are qualities that cannot be underestimated. He will do whatever he can to make this team and club successful and that is even admitting mistakes, changing things or making decisions fans might not agree with. His track record proves he knows what he is doing.

We only have 2 coaches at first team (with a goalkeeping coach and also fitness/head of Sports Science coach) so I wonder of that is how Wilder likes it or that he might bring another coach in? That could of course upset the apple cart and I think Wilder and Knill’s bond/trust makes it work. Those 2 (and Mitchell) probably do the work/hours of about 5 coaches/chief scout’s at other clubs!

Key will be about supplanting the squad. I will assess the potential incomings below but it is not unreasonable to suggest we will need 4 or 5 more first team starters and 2 or 3 more to add to it (although the 4 or 5 making way as guaranteed starters will still be key men as part of the squad even if not first team regulars, I am thinking likes of Lafferty, Wright, Duffy, Hanson and even gulp…Sharp….more on that later!). Key is finding balance between what has got us there with the team spirit and also loyalty to those that did the job- argument they all deserve a crack but also recognising and being ruthless to those that won’t be quite good enough.

I would like at least a backup keeper and then in terms of starters at least one centre back, maybe two, a left back, possibly another central midfielder and two strikers. So you are looking 7 players and maybe 4 or 5 starters. People may think we do not need to change things too much but I fear the extra class and pace of above could be telling and whilst the spine of Moore, O’Connell, Freeman, Coutts, Fleck and maybe Sharp could begin the season we do need quite a few more of their level or better. Hence the need for 4 or 5 Champ level players who can cope with the step up.

Your reports are always brilliant even when I don't agree with them on very rare occasions ;) superb stuff

I can only add that I think you should have got your own column and all your material published in the Sheffield Star a long time ago

I would go one better - should have had a column in the Green 'Un when it was at it's peak (and you were about 14 )

FWIW and I seldom post anything like this at all, but I have heard that Evans is a £100k deal with add ons if numerous things are achieved.

Not saying Wer I Erd Dis Pal though. ;)

Part 3 to come later all being well

Parts 4 and 5 up now....Keepers and Defenders

Top stuff again DB very good read , Aside the great work from CW & AK the lad in background whose done a great job deserves a lot of plaudits -Mitch - he's done a fantastic job scouting , a local lad with wealth of experience & eye for a player ,
Aside from the DB's review does anyone know who is funding the transfers since the prince became a co- owner , my understanding and I may well be wide of the mark was that Mc Cabe wrote off his loans to the club & that the prince was the to provide the battle chest ?
Does anyone know how the financing of the club is ran ?

I have enjoyed your comments this year and look forward to more of the same next season. I have watched a good few under 23 and 18 games and it looks like we have a good crop of potential players coming through like Graham, Slater and Semple. We have others I look forward to watching develope as well but I do feel the Development side of our team is one to be congratulated, they seem to be able to concentrate on a small number of boys with various skill sets.
Hope the 18s round it off on Wednesday with a win
