SUFC Ladies: Anyone going this Sunday?

Our Ladies are playing Leeds Utd @ BDTBL 12:00 in the FA Cup, sounds a bit of a tasty tie.

I've been meaning to take in my first Ladies match but it's inconvenient for me to get upto Shirecliffe or wherever they play when at Home, so I've decided I'm going to this one and it's £3 at the turnstile.

They won promotion to the FA Premier League Midlands division last season and most of the players are Blades.

I think saying they aren't very good at football is slightly harsh, women's football has improved greatly over the recent years since the FA has actually started paying attention to it and putting more money in.

It is fair to say that the quality of the men's game is far higher than the women's game, but also bear in mind that the men's game has had money pumped into it for a long time now, allowing the professional footballers to train every day with top class coaching to improve their skills, whereas in the women's game until recently (before the WSL was launched) there were no full time professional footballers in England, also worth pointing out at this moment that the FA actually banned women's football completely for about 40 years! Before the ban a team of women from Preston were regularly beating their male counterparts.

The women's game is moving in the right direction and personally I think this is a good thing. I'd much rather watch the England women's team than the men's team right now, and not just because of Toni Duggan!!

I don't think it's misogynist but if you don't like women's football, you can't really like football itself. Cause it's all relative anyway. When we were down in the 4th division you just translated to what a good player was and what good skills were, within that standard. I don't watch Billy Sharp in the Championship or last year in League One, thinking 'he's no Harry Kane'! Neither do I watch Fleck and think 'he's no Lionel Messi'. I just watch them and love them trying to attain what they can within their abilities, and occasionally marvel when they perhaps go beyond their normal abilities [Duffy at Hillsborough]. This is why Brooks is so exciting at the moment. Not just because he's of a different and higher standard, and that he makes Wednesday players look 'pathetic' but because we can actually see in him how poor our own standard is sometimes. The first thing i do when I go abroad is look for a game, of any standard and go and support them and look for good players within that standard. Finally, and thankfully, the women's modern day game is minus some major ingredients of the man's modern day game, and that is- diving, feigning injury and beating the floor like a wrestler, berating the referee for any decision that doesn't go their way, and in general the displaying of the sort of behaviour a true misogynist would describe as being 'like a bloody woman'!

Good point Lupa The Noa makes there about the lack of diving etc, it certainly seems a more "pure" form of the beautiful game.

Having said that I don't see it lasting. The more the game is commercialised and the money at stake increases, the financial reward for winning will also increase which is what will lead to gamesmanship (or I guess we should say gameswomanship?)

The funniest thing is that he has apologised and with the daft remarks he has lost sponsors, so he accepts the joke is now on him:

Absolutely no interest in women's football, it's not for me. Nothing against women playing football, but for me its not what I consider to be part of the Blades as there is no progression through to the first team

If I want to watch a non Blades game of football I'd rather go and watch my old Saturday league side or as was posted the other day, one of our local non league sides.

Other than that I'll be playing or watching another sport.

Women’s football reminds me of schoolboy football.

I’ve watched the international tournements and the skill level is surprisingly high and in spells it’s entertaining THEN the defense or keeper will make a school boy/ school girl error.

Sometimes the standard of defending is laughable and any shot towards the top corner tends to make the keeper struggle, it’s as though the nets are too big. Also most of the women seem to struggle with shots outside the area as they can’t genetate enough power.

Agree it’s not a patch on the men’s game, heard a rumour that the women’s team played the England under 17’s boys team in a friendly and the women were comfortably beaten.

However it’s worth encouraging, does offer decent entertainment and it’s cheap to watch. SUFC women’s team might be my best chance of seeing us win a major trophy.

I wouldn't say the issue is strength, if we accept that men are naturally stronger than women then we have to say that a female goalkeeper wouldn't have the same strength as a male goalkeeper, but at the same time a ball kicked by a female wouldn't be kicked as hard, so the strength is all relative.

I would say the issue here is coaching. Women's football is only just gaining traction and WSL teams only have to have a minimum of 3 full time professionals (this was true a few years ago I'm not sure if the number has been increased since I looked into it!). If you had to pick 3 positions to have full time, so they get more training and coaching etc, goalkeeper is not going to be top of the list. So outfield players are increasing their skill level faster than goalkeepers are increasing theirs.

I’d say a significant factor is the height and size issue of women keepers.

Sometimes it’s seems that the goals are too big.
Anything hit (doesn’t even need to be a hard shot) towards the top corner and the women goalies are often struggling.
Also there seems to be a lot of crosses dropped. Some of the goals scored are comical.

However it’s that unpredictability and goals coming out of silly mistakes that help make the game more entertaining.

There was a phone-in on Talksport a few months ago about what standard the England international women would be compared to men and someone suggested it might be National League level.

However many callers said the women would struggle against most parks teams that play on a Sunday.

Another caller said a few years ago that the England women’s team played the England under 17 boys team at the national centre in Burton. Apparently the under 17’s boys won 6-0.
