was looking at "My Kind of Town" magazine this morning and there was a photo of 4 members of the SUFC team in a Quizball tv programme in the 1960s. They were John Short (coach), Frank Barlow , Tom Fenoughty and Dave Berry (celebrity fan). I have read that Barlow and Fenoughty were the two of the brainiest Blade players in the 1960s but I didnt realise that Dave Berry was/is a Blade fan (I had assumed he wasnt interested in football and if there was a celebrity Blade fan I could name from the 1960's it would have been Black and White Minstrel Show's Tony Mercer). I have no recollection of watching any of the Quizball programme on TV, do you recall watching SUFC in Quizball? It states in the "My Kind of Town" magazine that SUFC took part twice on the programme, one in 1966-67 and one in 1967-68

I can just remember Quizball, and United being on. It had different levels of questions/points, the easiest being Route One. Sure I'd recently seen it online possibly youtube?

edit - could only find this

Yes, Remember Quizball well, you could take 1,2,3,4 shots at goal - the 1 question was the hardest and they got easier in descending order
Fenoughty was a university graduate / part time teacher I think so yes he was quite bright!
Dave Berry was the Blades guest supporter - Pigs had the guy from 'Good Old Days Leonard Sachs !
Seem to remember recording one episode at the City Hall - It's a long time ago !

Oh, I do remember it then. Wasn't Ian Ure of Arsenal really good at Route One questions ?

Yep, I remember it being on TV and watching it. Tom Fenoughty was a chemist and had attended university before joining United (I was a ball boy on his debut for the reserves in the Central League). Frank Barlow stayed on at Mexborough Grammar School to do his A Levels before signing pro with the Blades. I guess those two were the pick of the bunch in academic terms on the playing staff (not hard in a group of footballers).

I remember it. When the Blades went for a Route 1 question, Blackwell got the sack. Dame Isobel Barnett represented the Blades on one occassion, but she had no connection with the club as far as I am aware.

I struggle to remember what I had for lunch, but for some reason, I seem to recall that one of our appearances on Quizball was agaisnt Motherwell?

By the end of the 60s, we could have had Joe Cocker as a celebrity fan, although I think at that time, he may have been more interested in chemical experimentation than anything Blades-related.

I can't remember quizball, but seem to remember two brothers from Woodseats who were ball boys, is this you?

Nah not me mate, I was only a guest ball boy for one game (as a ten year old I absolutely loved it, in the dressing room with players gawping at some who were in 1st team at times).
I think you may be referring to Howard Ashcroft who was a 'regular' ball boy for quite a few years and showed me the ropes on my day (fetch ball from t'cricket pitch was the basis:)). He's the brother of Ray Ashcroft of 'The Bill' fame I believe, though whether Ray was the other ball boy brother I couldn't say.
Years later Howard came and had a couple of seasons with the team I played for, he was a useful keeper and also played for Arbourthorne EA in the (now) Meadowhall Sunday League.

I think that must be them, they lived on Woodseats Road? Must have known them at Jordanthorpe, never realised about Ray Ashcroft.

Ray Ashcroft came in to do an interview at a radio station I used to be at and we chatted for ages about 'tBlades. Seemed a decent sort, even when I told him I never watched The Bill.

This was the show where the phrase, "Route One Football" came from.

If you chose Route One you got a "hard" question which, if you answered correctly, meant you scored!

On this clip, Bob Wilson started off with Route Four - four easy questions rather than one hard question.
The opposition could at any time put in a "tackle" (can't remember if they were limited to maybe just tackling the Route One questions) and if the tackle was successful, they scored.

Fore-runner to Question of Sport.

Yes, it was against Motherwell in 1966-67 and we won. We lost in 1967-68 against Dunfermline (I think). Dont know if we had the same team for both matches

Just found the below links. we beat Motherwell in 1966-67 by 2-0 but lost 5-0 to Leicester in the net round (Lady Isobel Barnett scored all five !)

In the following season we lost 5-1 to West Brom. John Short, Frank Barlow and Tom Fenoughty were still in our team but Geoffrey Wheeler (looked up in google and I have not heard of him before) replaced Dave Berry as our celebrity fan and scored our goal
