Not one to bash Wilder for subs as more often than not he gets it right but I couldn’t really see what the double substiturion was trying to achieve this afternoon. I get that We ended up with only 1 midfielder on the pitch and two left wing backs. To me the obvious change was Woodburn for Duffy to try and turn good possession into a few more chances.

We were dominating the ball up until the first two changes, after which Norwood was marked out of the game and had no one around him to pass to. McGoldrick was floating around all over and neither Washington or Johnson seemed to actually have a proper position? And once our shape had gone Bristol came into the game and took their chance when it came. Anyone aware if Sharp was injured ?

I'll have to watch the game back but to make those subs that early seemed bizarre.

Surely he could've thought of something better than bringing Johnson and Washington on in attacking positions.

And couldn't Coutts have been on the bench if Fleck was missing?

Maybe Bristol City is his bogey team...

Should have used the subs to shut up shop and bat for a draw as I said on the Match thread.

Can't say that I didn't see where he was coming from with the subs, first time we've had the option to put pace on and on another day it could have worked.

I'd have thought it would've been a straight swap Johnson for Stevens though.

Obviously didn't work though, or didn't work as well as theirs did anyway.

I disagree that we were dominating the ball up until that point. I thought we were struggling to take possession of it.

Coutts was only on the bench against Villa because he’d been nagging Wilder to put him on there. He isn’t fit enough to play yet

Unless he’s injured you Don’t take Sharp off when we need a goal, he’s our only natural goal scorer.

The only players Wilder seems to sub are Duffy, Sharp and Lundstram. The first two are baffling at times and the latter because he's crap (but then gets another, then another, then another chance to prove himself).

Needs to sharpen up his tactics on substitutions does our Chris.

I can understand Duffy cos he does tend to fade after 70 minutes. Sharp going off is a huge puzzle when we aren’t winning.

Like in most games when Leon doesn't play, Billy did most of his work in the wrong areas yesterday. He has to do much more of the donkey work when he doesn't have Leon on and he finds himself out wide far too often. McGoldrick was in the middle on his own surrounded by defenders on a fair few occasions. I know the perception is that Leon is shit and doesn't score many but what he does do is give the midfielders and wing backs time to get forward into the right positions so that the strikers can go and play in the box instead of on the right or left wing.

Thought the ref giving three of our players yellows early doors for minor offenses, yet turning a blind eye for them may have restricted our play.some what. Got the feeling if we had scored he would have sent someone off.

Bristol City had started to have a spell after they changed formation, so presumably Wilder was trying to counter theirs. Johnson came on for Duffy but sat in o make a midfield 3, and Washington for Sharp was a straight swap.

Billy and Duffy both looked tired, Johnson and Washington both have more pace and energy and they showed it when they came on.

Ultimately, the changes didn't work and Bristol City kept the upper hand.

just reading johnson’s ( city manager) comments with interest.. it would appear that they matched us up 3-5-2 and then switched to 4-4-2
that makes a lot of sense if you think about it
we usually start fast high energy get a goal up and then counter teams
what teams are doing (and have been doing 2nd half of last season) is keeping us within distance and waiting for duffy to go off then they switch systems and overrun us ;)
it’s all about keeping it tight while duffy is on we need woodburn to step up

I don't expect either of them to play a full 90 minutes but that was just a smidge early to sub them.
