One thing Ive noticed from our two home games is that new Nige is not afraid to brings subs on with time left for them to make an impact. Old Nige would have left it till 5 minutes from the end yesterday before making any changes, and he would probably have bought a defender on to hang on for one point!

Yes and good substitutions they were Doormat. Woolford is now starting to make an impression, Wallace now beginning to string a few appearances together and looking classy. Sparky performed as well yesterday when he came on, as he did against Soton. He is some player when on form but, so frustratingly inconsistent.

Some people might pull pieces out of this post but I would imagine Adkins brings an added advantage in this department as he is very knowledgeable in all aspects of Sports Science and Physiotherapy. He took the players up to the University at the beginning of the season as he wanted to know the conditioning of all of the players in his squad.

Some players actually play with monitors one these days. They show live stats that indicate the condition of the players during the game which in turn gives the manager an idea of howe influencial they will be on the pitch. I'm not saying this is the case but I reckon Adkins is big on conditioning and bares this in mind when making early substitutions.

I thought the substitutions yesterday were the highlight of the game :-)

It wasn't Sammon's type of game (yet?), Adkins waited to see how they set up second half, when they hadn't changed he went for McNulty and Sharp's movement.

Adams was just having a poor game and Woolford needs playing time.

JCR had got a knock and wasn't moving freely. Damage limitation.

He does seem happy to use all three subs with 20 minutes still left to play. I hope he doesn't get caught out with injuries or losing his goalie late in a game.

Oh that will happen at some point, it's bound to.. But how many points will the early subs have gained over the season?

Exactly. I'd fancy that his willingness to make changes whilst there's still time for them to affect a game will gain us more points than it will cost us.

I criticised his subs yesterday, shows how much I know and indicates why I am not a manager! All three made a significant impact on the game.

I think there are two things here. Making one or two changes early enough to allow them time to make an impact is good. Using up all your subs that early when you don't need to is risky.

Don't count up how many points the early subs win. Count up how many points the third sub coming on by the 70th minute wins.

Indeed you are right to point that out and it's always a chance it can happen but rare.

The chances that 3 fresh players, especially in the squad we have got should make a difference is pretty high and so it proved yesterday.

In the marks for the game I gave Adkins 9 out of 10 and therefore my MOM as I believe his substitutions made the difference against a side parking the bus with a very organised but negative performance.

I suppose in a way it is similar to Warnock only naming outfield substitutes. It is a risk, but a calculated one, and in the biggest game when Warnock was caught out without a goalkeeper we still won.

I think if anything I am surprised that Adkins has used up all his subs so early in every league game so far. If on the odd occasion he needed to make more or more radical changes to turn a game in our favour then fair enough, but getting all his subs on long before the final ten minutes seems like clockwork as much as previous managers refusing to change anything until an hour has passed and throwing someone on to rescue a game in the final two minutes.

Perhaps Flynn and Peterborough is just too fresh in the memory!

To be fair he was forced into 2 early changes against Peterborough due to injuries, and considering that is the game we have been best in so far, maybe he wouldn't have felt the need to make all his changes so early if he was given the choice?
