100% agree with that.

With the China Town in our doorstep we could be seeing more students attracted to BDTBL to swell the coffers.
" Weir Bolton , weir Barmy , weir off our fuckin head " ..... types ......................., getting under the feet .

Let me guess...

You've never been to University or had academic ability and think everyone who has is "privileged" and it makes you feel uncomfortable because basically you're thick?
Ooh youre hard. Maybe I did go to Uni ,maybe I went to college , maybe I was in the Military ,maybe Im privileged , maybe I went straight into a job. What I can do is read and if you read the OP it was a light hearted quip aimed at students gridlocking the City yesterday causing me to be late ,not Students coming to Sheffield.
Now I apologise if that went over youre head but you were trying to that hard at making yourself look fucking clever and hard that it passed you by.
Try another guess.

Sorry but the building and converting of other buildings hasn't just got underway it's been going on for years.
I have seen none of the big family house in the area I am familiar with go back to being family house just the opposite infact.
There's an explosion of it now. It really has ramped up in and around the centre.

In any case, we're diverting from the point. The council may or may not be a drag on the city. Billionaires deciding to flock to Sheffield would be a big bonus. A terrorist attack would be a big setback. The Universities are an enormous plus for the city, independent of whatever the council does, or other unrelated events.

Really? So you can tell by what I write whether I'd be able to say this to someone's face eh? I wouldn't worry about me pal. But thanks for the concern.

Sorry but I can't stand such stupid comments about students. Many of us have been students at some point in our life and many of us will be proud parents of children who go on to further education.

But anyone from Sheffield ought to thank their lucky stars that this city attracts students. Because without them we would have nothing! This city is WAY behind most other cities of its kind because of the parochial "village" attitude that has set us back decades. I come on here to have a chat about football not to read discriminatory comments about educated young people who are trying to better themselves and bring money to our deprived city.
Another educated point for you ,people who call people 'pal' look a bit sad ,and not very tough at all.

I work in an industry that runs on students and immigrants, the two most maligned groups amongst a large strata of the country.

Apparently, the fat cunts in Hackett t-shirts with fags behind their ears who I see in the local are the lifeblood of the nation instead. Who woulda thunk it?

How long have you been using the Horse and Jockey? I've never seen you in there! :)

Long may the student population increase.

More student accommodation it's been good for a lot locally in the building trade.

Two weekends on the trot now, takes forever to get into Aldi carpark at bottom of London Rd,dread what it will be like when that tower block at the bottom of Bramall lane is finished on student invasion weekends, whats the opposite of exodus well that what i wanted to say.

That's not quite the case, I did a spell as parent governor at one of the primary schools around Hunters Bar and they along with other schools in and around that area have a massive problem in that as the students have moved away from terrace houses into purpose built city centre accommodation, the demand for places at these schools has rocketed as the terrace houses have been reclaimed by families.

As I have said in the area I am familiar with i have seen no indication of this just the opposite infact.
The area I am familiar would actually include Hunters Bar.
I have seen no houses that have been used for student accommodation go up for sale and return to family accommodation.

Fortunately, people are pointing out that it's happening elsewhere. :)

I have a confession.

I came to Sheffield in 1982 as an 18 year old, student doing business studies at the Poly. I'd been to games many times in the midlands, where I hailed from but never felt an allegiance to anyone.

I went to a United game in my first week, it felt right - they were the nitty gritty city team, the pigs were fashionable pretty boys. From the second I went into the stadium (on my own) and stood on the kop, I was totally hooked. I have been going now for 34 years, held a season ticket for most of them, been all over watching United including all the Wembley trips, got 2 lads who are passionate unitedites.
Whilst at Poly I met and was lectured in Economics by the late and great Dave Wicketts. There we were, a Londoner and a midlander who spent as much time as possible discussing the Blades and as little time as possible talking about economics. Brilliant days then, and brilliant days now.

I am living proof that some of those pesky students hang around, and develop a love for united. Be patient when little Tarquin turns up with his mum and dad and holds you up for a few minutes. He may sit next to you for the next 50 years at BL.

I knew it.......

Simmer!

I think I interpreted your comments in the same way that many others did - that you'd got some grudge against students and their parents - especially those from certain backgrounds. So you don't then and it was just a joke? That's good to hear - and yes, it went over my head.

Much as I find Rodents in my city an irritation and immigrants worthy of contempt no matter how desperate their predicament (cos I am selfish and just hate other humans especially scousers) I logged in to give you a like for the accuracy of your descriptive powers of the best of our noble breed. I agree that the universities are a major part of our city. They attract so much investment and help support other industries (nightlife!?).

I speak to international students every day in my line of work - mostly from the far east - and my word, they're fucking minted. The universities charge the foreign kids 10's of thousands a year and then they spend shit loads in Sheffield in between trips to Europe / America out of term time. Even the broke English students are broke for a reason - They've wazzed away their student loan.... in Sheffield!

Maybe just my pedantry, but surely the students parents who gridlocked the City weren't the Chinese.

It just seems a long way to drive to deposit a child, an IKEA cook set and a duvet...

PS- I live in a student town now near to the University where they all walk past and the worst names I heard whilst mowing the lawn today were Willow and Jonquille. For fecks sake, Willow and Jonquille.... You just know they're going to be annoying and in need of a welcome slap.

PPS - mind there is a fair amount of Home Counties posh crumpet knocking about so its not all bad !

Who's pointed it out in other areas ?
If I have missed something what areas are these ?
If you are referring to deaneandagana's comment about a school in the Hunters bar area, then that could be down to a number of reasons why there is or was a high demand for places.
Surely the best indication that it was happening would be houses that were used for student accommodation comming on the market and being bought by families. This is not happening in the area I am familiar with which in includes Hunters Bar.

As I said, though I'm certain of this point, it's a sideshow to the main point being made.

Something tells me this discussion won't go anywhere, so let's not waste anymore if each other's time. :)

I came to Sheffield on my "year out" while studying. Worked at the SYPTE, went to watch a match one evening at some team I'd not seen before.

And here I am, posting, some 24 years later. This ex-student came to Sheffield and never really left. Thank Goodness.

I've changed my mind. Bloody students!

:)

Had to give my input here really. I'm the classic case of the young lad moving to the big city to start university and being drawn in by £14/11/5 championship football. United felt like a huge club to me then as I had become accustomed to the odd away day to see Posh at Luton, Barnet, Macclesfield, rushden.....you get the ideas. And this was only when my workload during a-levels allowed it.

That's one thing large parts of society don't get, you actually do have do work pretty hard to get into (a good) uni in the first place. It was hard enough in 2007 when I sat my a levels (politics, history and spanish in case anyone asks) but it's got even harder now as grade requirements go up to counter the 'exams are getting easier' school of thought and then there's the tuition fees to consider- it's three times what I has to pay back per year. so basically those junior doctors you see got themselves into 50k worth of debt but nobody mentions that......anyway, I digress.

The university of sheffield is actually very hard to get into and remains very well regarded accross the board. I needed ABB (they put it up to AAB for the academic year after ours) and some courses are AAA now! Might even be one or two where you need an A*.

Sheffield itself is an ideal student city, this is partially because it doesn't feel much bigger or intimidating than any student's nearest city to where they've grown up (I felt this way with pboro in mind) but it's got everything you could want except a good football te............aaaaaaaanyyywaaayyy

The majority my friends from uni were actually from the south east or the more affluent areas of the West Midlands with many also being from Yorkshire itself and areas around Manchester. So sheffield has an appeal to young people from all over the country, a lot of whom come from so called middle class families with supportive parents and quite a good education etc......if you get what I mean.

I've read some comments on here about the behaviour of some students which are no doubt well founded and I'd like to be able to reply with the classic 'that's just the hallamers' remark but that is a bit disingenuous as well as potentially pretentious.

It is true you get some students who 'rebel and revel' having left home and are no longer under the eye of their parents so to speak, most (certainly at uni of sheff anyway) were actually better brought up than that in the first place, hence how they have managed to get into uni in the first place.

Sorry that was a long post wasn't it?

Jonquille, the parents must be shareholders in John Lewis

Whilst it's a fact that students are vital to our economy spare a thought for my mate who lives in a student area (Broomhill) and is woken up in the early hours on a regular basis not good when you've got young kids
He gets abuse (from some) when he tries to reason with them
It's been a student area as long as I can remember. Surely you expect that kind of thing if you move there?

That said, my mate lived on Marlborough Road in the nineties and I remember him telling me about hearing some students making a noise late at night and tipping people's bins over, followed by the sound of some local voices, some thuds and some loud and sincere apologies

Hackett is the new Burberry, TD.

am i the only person in the world who absolutely hated being a student?

Nope. 3 years wasted for me. A lost kid who acted like he liked what and where he was studying, when in fact, he fucking hated both but didn't have the stones to speak up and change anything for fear of letting people down. All resulted in mental illness and no graduation.

This was only 3 years or so ago. Luckily doing much better now and actively looking for a way back into education, but mine isn't an unfamiliar story. Telling kids that they need to pick a direction which will affect the course of their careers for the rest of their lives at 18/19 is stupid. I didn't know what I wanted for fucking tea the same evening, never mind what I wanted to study for the next 3 years.
