Do you think signing a new striker should be a priority?

  • Of course it is, you sexy idiot

  • No - other areas take priority

I’ve noticed a lot of posters frothing at the mouth for another striker... and I don’t get it?

4 out of 5 disagree with you at this stage of the poll.

Quite conclusive wouldn't you say, so why don't the majority agree with you?

Only Newcastle, Palace, Watford and Norwich scored less than United and two of those got relegated.

It is questionable that we have adequate replacements for any of the the back 4 (which includes Hendo) - so relying on the defence NEXT season to be as good as this is OK for now, but it could end up just a silly gamble. CW will try and resolve if at all possible, whilst at the same time trying to get a possible central striker from somewhere.

For me it's try and move Robinson on to WBA, bring £8-10m back in and move heaven and earth for Ollie Watkins

Another way of looking at it is that I got 99 people (so far) to vote that I’m sexy

But to answer your question I think that we as a fanbase are addicted to signing strikers. Even I’m not immune to it, I have to work hard to get myself really worried about the other massive gaps in our squad before I can get over the urge to hope we spunk our whole budget on Loren Moron in the hopes of him being the Spanish, goalscoring-Didzy.

Sorry, we are addicted to staying in the Premier league and for that we need a very good GK, a very good defence, a very good midfield and something other than average strikers.

For me i am not interested in how cool players are what cars they've got or what outside activities they get up to - it's just about the 11 that play and how they play and at this moment in time, the striking department is very much average and open to improvement - whether it's Loren Moron or not.

PS: anyway........we only have your word that you're sexy ;)

McBurnie doesn't look the striker he was for Swansea, I'm hoping he grows into being PL.
Mousset can be great; get his bird over with her mother if that's what it takes get him settled.
Sharp still good enough until he isn't, that could be next season it could be in 3 seasons.
McG not an out and out scorer.
Robinson if somebody willing to pay let him go otherwise see McBurnie.
We need another striker.

Another way to look at it is 99 blokes think you are sexy, sorry I couldn't commit to that if my missus finds out she'll think I'm after dishing out bum sex and that upsets the apple cart.

that'll change when you buy a pink away shirt and confront your feminine side ;)

For the risk of sounding like a broken record! Average in this league for strikers is £40m (Joelinton/Haller). Name me one championship team who could spend £80m plus wages on 2 average premier league strikers after gaining promotion?

Not sure what you are saying mate? We aren't a newly promoted team anymore.

I would agree that its tough if that's what you mean, I actually think McBurnie and Mousett are ok, and Robinson may come good as I said. I think we can keep them and sign someone else as well. Not sure why we offered Billy 2 more years. Didsy has played well but needs goals.

It will be expensive to get strikers of course, but that's the same for any team.

Unless you think Moose can get back to his best then we need a new striker

Unless you think Billy can somehow figure out how to create his own chances we need 2

I don't think we'll spend big on a forward, not after doing so three times last Summer and not with our priorities elsewhere (goalkeeper, defensive competition/cover, creativity in midfield).

We may get in a body upfront, especially if Robinson goes (or is loaned again) but it'll be a lower league flyer or possibly a loan like Rhian Brewster, for example.

Did come up with an enormously hilarious response to that but it turned out it wasn't PC and I've been called in to see HR tomorrow (good job I hold all the posts in this organisation, still not looking forward to it.)

It is admittedly - a lot less satisfying when you put it that way.

Finishing the sitters he has been getting would be nice, too.

If you're referring to the Southampton ones (and I can't think of many others) then first of all he didn't 'get' them - they were almost entirely self made by a combination of his strength , skill and anticipation .

Neither were they 'sitters' , the first being from a tight near post angle against a very good goalkeeper and the second was denied by an excellent last ditch challenge before he had time to get his shot away .

Throughout this season I have seen much easier chances missed not only by our own players but by the likes of Aguerro , Salah , Rashford etc. with hardly a word of criticism from anyone .

Billy Sharp's only problem is that he has become a victim of his own success in that , as a result of his outstanding goal scoring achievements , any missed opportunity to score from anything even resembling a chance is treated as a failure by many on here which is totally unrealistic .

Ironically , fans of other clubs are not nearly so eager to write him off as can be seen by many of their comments on Roy's view from . Only today , I was out with a Newcastle supporter who made the comment " If we'd had Billy Sharp instead of Joeolinton this season , we would have finished much higher up the table " and I wouldn't disagree with that .

if you look back he had chances my 10 year old could score. Is It confidence ? It is lack of experience ? Who knows but put Sharp in the same situation that McBurnie didnt take the chance and Sharp would have scored.

This the same Sharp who had 2 clear cut chances at Southampton, plus a header v Newcastle that he squandered......? Give those chances to McBurnie and he converts at least one of them...

Plain to see that scoring goals was a huge issue for us, if our defence wasn't so good we would have been scrapping with Villa, Bournemouth and Watford.....

We could have world class finishers like Lewandowski up front and our goal output wouldn't be much higher because we don't create chances or even take pot shots. As Carlton Blade said unless we get a striker than can create his own chances, it's bordering pointless bringing others in.

FWIW every forward underperformed expected goals, McGoldrick by a massive margin:

Goals/expected goals:

McGoldrick 2/8.72
McBurnie 6/8.07
Mousset 6/6.07
Sharp: 3/4.14
Robinson 1/1.56

The group as a whole underscored xg by 10-11 goals. I don't think it's true that we couldn't have done better even with our propensity for creating fewer chances and not shooting from distance. It should not be difficult to get someone to outscore McGoldrick, at least.

Even if you don't believe in these stats (they are not perfect by any means) it was obvious to the naked eye that we missed chances we should have taken, particularly McGoldrick and (after lockdown) Sharp.

FWIW 4 players outperformed expected goals: Fleck, Stevens, Baldock and Berge.

We need to get someone in next season who is better than what we have up front. If we don't, a big downturn in performance is a real possibility when other factors (no Henderson, most notably) are taken into account.

Whilst we all knew about McGoldrick, you could bring in someone to outscore him....however he wouldn't likely have the same influence on a match as Didsy does. Almost impossible to say, if we had x at the club, we'd have scored more goals.

I do not believe that McGoldrick is as important to the team as many people think he is. I am confident that a forward who scored 10 times would be more "valuable" in points gained compared to McGoldrick last season, though I know many people disagree with me.

Bert enjoys watching McGoldrick play, he's very stylish and skilful but if you play as one of our two front men you need to score more goals than 2 from 28 appearances. It's that simple.

Agree.

I actually thought the McBurnie / Mousset partnership looked very promising in spells.

Have to say i agree with this. McG is a good pro, works hard, gives it his all, that shouldn't be questioned. But is he going to score the goals we need in the PL? I don't think so. Yeah, he has a bit of skill and flair, but it often amounts to nothing as he doesn't have the pace or power to get away from people at this level. Same goes for Sharp. If i was that Southampton defender he skinned in the last match to create his first chance i'd be pretty worried about my mobility.

We need more goals next season - as others have said, we can't rely on the same defensive performance throughout next season. I don't think anyone knows (on here) what our budget will be in this window (personally i think we might be pleasantly surprised), but if it doesn't allow for a couple of quality 10 - 15 goal forwards as it's needed elsewhere in the squad, then someone like Brewster on loan is imperative, and i reckon would work well playing off McB.

I am afraid that I don’t think Billy has made the step up to PL level. No one (probably even CW) knows whether he can get back to his early season form and if not he is not good enough. Callum also did not make the step up so unless something dramatic changed during his loan spell at WBA he is not going to cut it in the PL. Diddy is great player but not out any out striker and is aging so that leaves just Ollie McB. For me we desperately need to sign another striker.

McBurnie missed quite a lot of easy headers throughout the season. Sharp fluffed a fair few chances that you’d say “Sharp buries those” when someone else misses them. Apart from a couple of games, neither does a great deal if they aren’t getting chances. Both weren’t anywhere near good or consistent enough this season. Hopefully one will keep improving and the other isn’t past it, but either way we need at least one good forward this summer.

Good one. So you can’t think of any? Me neither off the top of my head
Not having a dig but his effort on the opening day was cack, good job Sharp was on hand to put it away. Also I'd like to have seen him test the keeper v Liverpool rather than just pass it to him and his goal against West Ham was a terrible effort that snuck in. I'm hoping he'll grow into the role.

So that’s 1 chance missed and 2 goals?

Yeah he’s missed loads of chances
