Strange game today

This was after Zoko had ran past him and scored though... Those that went seem to disagree somewhat on how he did, but that's the same whenever he plays! ;)

But as I recall it Zoko scored when he was up front in a 4-4-2 - and it was Collins he ran past after he'd missed his clearing header. I stand to be corrected though as it was the far end of the ground and I've not seen any replays.

Monty was nearly skinned a couple of times late on and in injury time though - when Carlisle were holding the ball in our corner. Other than that he was far more secure than LJF.

It's never Monty's fault. None of his many deficiencies matter - just create a special, nay unique, job description that excuses him any task requiring football skills. He gets the run around? No problem - he's out of position. Meet Lee Williamson: He's spent most of his Blades career out of position to accomodate your favourite mediocrity. Be sure to mention it every time he has a bad game won't you?

Staggering hypocrisy.

Could you perhaps tell us exactly what Montgomery did wrong in this match.

The point has been made before by several people on this forum that Williamson is not really a wide player and would be better utilised in his favoured central position. I wonder how he would have coped at full back?

Our backline looked disorganised as Carlisle played it forward. Maguire tried to get his head on the ball, but Zoko chipped it past him. Monty looked to come to our rescue, but hesitated a bit, and then Zoko ran away from him. A brilliant individual goal to be fair, but we should have coped better.

Well, I was there, and I thought Monty had a shocker for the most part (and I've got no axe to grind -- generally speaking, I tend to be as impressed by the functional bits of his game as I'm dismayed by the dysfunctional).

At Carlisle I thought he looked too slow to play at full-back, I thought his positional awareness looked naive both defensively and coming forward (with the ball and without it), and that his touch/passing was the usual mixed bag. I felt he looked very exposed at right back, whereas LJF just looked like an inconsistent player having a poor game.

Can't agree with those who say Brunton Park's a dump though. Felt like a proper old football ground to me. Then again, I am an old git.

>If Monty left,is there any one else you would constantly criticise
yep.. after monty left i'd go onto my other bette noir stephen quinn.. until we get rid of these two useless clowns who i used to call the keystone cops a couple of years ago, we'll get nowhere.. (yes i was banging on about this three years ago)
THEN i'd shut the f**k up .. for a bit :D

Made a very late decision to go on Sunday night and unable to order tickets from SUFC logged onto Carlisle Uniteds web site and ordered them in the home end. Took my teenage daughter and my partners Man U Supporting son (the only way a glory hunter would tick off Brunton Park on his list of grounds!)

We were on the uncovered terracing opposite the Blades fans and have to say apart from getting rather wet due to the lack of roof I really enjoyed standing up and the close proximity to the pitch. It was interesting standing in the wrong end, the Carlisle support was probably the worst I have ever come across, no singing and no passion, and probably even more moaning than we can muster at the lane! The only chant they had was "United, United" which was good because I could join in!

Had to laugh when we walked in and my daughter said where are the seats and nearly threw a mardy when I told her she would have to stand up (they don't know they are born).

I actually enjoyed the game, Carlisle had 3 chances and stuck em away, whilst we played well and didn't. Carlisles 1st was well taken but Harry was at fault not making the header and getting completely wrong footed. Monty was okay, but whilst some would say he is not a footballer at all, he definately isn't a right back and we lacked the attacking impetus that Lowton gives us. Biggest gripe of the day was Macdonald who had already changed his boots twice during warm up, what the f*ck was he doing changing them again just as Carlisle are about to take a throw in level with our penalty area!!!

Came away reasonably positively that with a bit more luck we would have won (hit the woodwork twice) and bar any disastrous decisions in January we will be there or thereabouts come May time, which is better than many of us could have dared hope for in August.

Finally the Man U fan whose opinion I do actually rate thought we were the beeter team and also played some tidy stuff. (Quite fair after the battering he got from me after the Blackburn result).

Happy New Year everyone and UTB's

The highlights don't show why, but as the forward pass is made the back four seems disorganised. Collins has broken out of it, probably to challenge the other striker, which means the remaining three has to drop deeper and pull in centrally. Both Monty and LJF are too high up, as the photo below shows. Monty is then basically outpaced.

Rather than blaming individuals though, the main problem is that our backline isn't organised as it should be. We'll hopefully work on it in training this week.

For the record by the way, I wasn't suggesting that Monty had had a faultless game or should be used at right back. Simply expressing my opinion that they looked more dangerous down LJF's side and highlighting the fact that people were slagging Monty for his name, rather than having seen the performance.

Got to agree BB - This may be why I initially thought it was Collins who missed the header - as Maguire made the challenge in the area Collins had previously been covering. Still think its hard on the right back to critiicise him for not covering a left sided break though.
