The Blades completed a seasonal and monthly double over Stoke City after winning 2-1 at the Bet 365 Stadium. United were the better side for much of the contest and deservedly led thanks to a scrappy goal from Jairo Riedewald and then a more clinical goal, from former Potter Tom Cannon. However, the Blades tendency to sit back and invite pressure as games develop continued to be their achilles heel. Ben Wilmott scored a scrappy goal from a ball that dropped inside the box and Stoke then put the visitors under pressure but could not find an equaliser. The final bit of notable action came when Ben Pearson was sent off for a cynical foul on sub-Patrick Bamford as be broke from halfway. After the disappointment of throwing away a two-goal lead on Boxing Day, United were able to see the game out and were good value for the three points despite concerns over the inability to keep the control up for the duration of games.

Manager Wilder continued to tinker with his line ups as he sought consistency from his side. He made several changes from the chastening defeat at Wrexham with McCallum, Arblaster, Chong, Hamer and Bamford all taken out of the side as half the outfield starters were dropped. Bamford’s omission was a surprise and surely could only be down to the sheer volume of games over this busy period – especially with his contact up in a matter of days? Stoke started with Gallagher and Nzonzi as they looked to try and find some consistency after some stuttering form of their own.

United began well with Seriki getting down the right and forcing an early corner when a challenge came in and Johansson had to receive treatment after falling awkwardly on the corner. O’Hare was seeing a lot of the ball early on and his run and dribble nearly saw a chance after Burrows played him in. At the other end Stoke won a corner but Gibson looped over.

Cannon did well to get down the side but overhit the ball as Campbell tried to get in. Burrows was high up the field again and sent over an inviting cross but Gibson beat Brooks to the ball to make an excellent interception with the winger looking to convert at the far post. There was another decent chance as Soumare, who had started well, threaded it through for O’Hare but the ball deflected over off the United player.

The visitors had been in total control and the game had been largely played in the Stoke half but United had not created anything clear cut and were perhaps guilty of overplaying at times despite getting in good positions. Brooks ran down the right and bizarrely a second ball came in to curtail his run. The crowd, of which the ball had come from, were aghast at the decision to return the ball back to the Blades but surely that was the only decision the referee could make? His interesting spell continued though when he ran into Soumare. Thomas twice went to ground too easily and with the home fans baying for fouls, Seriki and Soumare both could be pleased with their good work to stop the dangerman from advancing.

The next spell saw both teams giving the ball away too cheaply and the game was mired in midfield for a period. Soumare continued his much-improved display with a neat step over, run and pass but O’Hare and Campbell both took too long, Burrows then wasted a crossing opportunity and it deflected out off the United man. The best chance of the game came when Seriki did well down the right, sent over a cross and as Campbell dummied, O’Hare blazed miles over. He was completely unmarked on the penalty spot and his finish was a poor one.

Stoke, buoyed by this let off, finally had a spell in the game for the final 10 minutes of the half. A ball from the right was allowed to bounce and Seriki was well off Thomas but the winger headed tamely at Cooper, when he had time to steady himself and either go for goal or find a teammate. Stoke then had another moment when after Burrows’ wild slice, Cooper had to save from Phillips header from the long throw. Manhoef was the next to get in as he worked his way down the right past a few challenges but his shot was at Cooper. After not being in the game, Stoke had tested Cooper on three occasions, albeit tame efforts – in comparison to United who had played well for long spells but looked rather powder puff – only the O’Hare effort was fashioned despite a clear possession advantage.

United had been poor starters after the break this season but turned this narrative around as they were able to open the scoring, with their first effort on goal. The ball dropped inside the box and Campbell tried to power his shot goalwards but it was rather a mishit but Bindo dropped on it and his effort squirmed under Johansson. RIEDEWALD was able to ensure it went over the line as he and a defender converged on the ball on the goal line and the Blades were in front.

United were now in confident mood and O’Hare’s excellent run saw him play in Brooks but the wingers shot deflected off a defender and looped over the bar. From the corner on the right, Burrows took a short one and exchanged passes with O’Hare before sending over the deep cross. CANNON was inexplicably left completely unmarked and swept home clinically under Johansson. United had scored twice in the opening 6 minutes of the second half and now had firm control of the game. However, after events at the Racecourse Ground, United could not sit comfortably. Brooks looked to make it three but his low daisy cutter went wide.

Mark Robins had seen enough and made a rare quadruple change. Pearson, Cisse, Bozenik and Jun-Ho Bae replaced Nzonzi, Mubama, Manhoef and Gallagher. Stoke also changed their formation and put an extra man in the centre of the park and at least started to see more of the ball after being desperately disappointing for an hour. Bindon did well to cut out a through ball and the home side won two corners and looking to exploit the long throw. On 65 minutes, Stoke got a goal back from such a source. The ball came in and despite United having opportunities to clear, it remained in the box and dropped for WILMOTT who fired home via the underside of the bar.

Stoke’s fans came to life and another corner saw Phillips head back over from the far post but Riedewald did well to clear under pressure. Soumare, Brooks and Campbell departed for Bamford, Arblaster and Chong. Rigo also came on for Seko for Stoke. Seriki was booked for timewasting as the game had now changed with the home team in the ascendancy and the Blades struggling to see much of the ball. Thomas got away from Seriki down the left-hand side and Bozenik headed down and wide. Lawal then hit an effort over the bar via a deflection as Stoke kept the pressure on.

United had a break but Bamford and Chong made a mess of it before they did have another chance from another breakaway soon after. Cannon fed Burrows who played it to Bamford but the shot was pushed away from Johansson.

McGuiness came on for Cannon on 85 minutes but soon after Stoke were reduced to ten men. Bamford was played in and was suddenly through and Pearson hauled him down. Whilst the United sub was a long way from goal, the sub was the last man and did not complain at the decision and he exited the field before his teammates – with his seventh red card of his career.

Rigo had a shot well off target at the ball dropped as despite having a man less, Stoke continued to try and find the leveller. There was 7 minutes of stoppage time to be played and the Stoke supporters did appeal twice for penalties but Lawal went down rather easily under the challenge from Chong and then as players clashed in the box, they asked for a foot up but was rather desperate from the crowd with the home players barely raising an appeal. Matos came on for Riedewald who had struggled with cramp but United were able to see out time and make sure, that this time they were able to hang onto the three points on the road.

United – It was a deserved win and for 60 minutes we were in complete control (save for a 10-minute spell before the half time whistle). We had more of the ball, played more in their final third and looked the better footballing side. We won our battles, controlled midfield and played some good stuff. We did not really look threatened (save for that little spell) at all and kept their dangermen quiet. However, for all the control and decent play and football with Soumare and Riedewald controlling the middle and O’Hare/Seriki busy – we did not really create much. Only the one cross that just evaded Brooks and then the big O’Hare chance- which he should have scored. We did not test the keeper at all -despite all our control and decent play up to the final third. I thought we were guilty of overplaying at times – as pretty as some of our football was. Someone needed to be more direct and get the cross in or take the shot in. O’Hare was excellent but he was one of the main culrpits. Burrows looked better than he has for some time and as I say, Soumare was excellent showing some good skill and some clever through balls down the middle. I was pleased generally with howe we played but we had not tested the keeper and then they put us under pressure and had as many chances as we had in a 5-minute spell.

This worried me for after the break as we have seen us drop off and I worried that the trend had started again but credit Wilder and the team. We came out fast and scored two goals and against a really poor side, that should have been enough. Brooks nearly gets a third and you want us to go on and finish them off. Yet again we sit off though. I know it was inevitable they would have a spell and would put a few corners/throws in but you want us just to get hold of the ball and break it up. Make it scrappy for a spell but we just sat back, ceded possession and almost asked them on. Robins put an extra man in the middle (actually took a striker off) and they had all the ball from when they scored. They were then allowed to get crosses in. We took too long to make changes again and when we did, we still did not change the shape – it was just like for like. Worrying that the coaching staff cannot adapt. We just needed to slow the game down but like at Wrexham became quick and frantic and we showed no effort to keep the ball or just have a few passes to take the sting out of it. Our game management is pathetic really and as soon as teams change things and up the intensity/sent balls into our last third, we start to crumble. Better teams than Stoke would have completed the turnaround but they had little in the way of dangerous forwards and in the end they did not create too much to be fair. I thought Bindon and Tanganga did well and made sure they won their battles/headers when it mattered and they only really had half chances and protected Cooper well. We had chances to finish it off towards the end and then the red card helped us see it over the line. WE did deserve to win but made it a lot harder than it needed to be.

The positive is we played well for an hour and for an away side controlled the game – but we need to create more from such good play. It is just a worry we almost need to be 2 or 3 goals up to see games out as we know that we drop off – whether it is mentality, confidence or fitness, we must address this if we want to keep climbing the lead. I think Stoke were largely in both games and they just seemed to be desperately appealing to the officials for anything and kept falling to the floor which was a bit pathetic.

It is concerning the lack of news on Bamford and he could conceivably have played his last game for us which would be a big blow – as he has played really well and you saw the difference again when he came on. Campbell was again poor and despite scoring, Cannon was quiet throughout. I was pleased with the defence as at least they stood firm towards the end but they must have been annoyed with those in front who stopped winning their battles and/or keeping the ball. It just kept coming back and from being comfortable, it became unnecessarily uneasy again.

It is a big three points as another defeat or even draw and we are back nervously looking over our shoulders. We now have 2 home games and hope we can get at least 4-6 points from these and try and keep moving up towards the middle places and just a position of comfort.

Ratings:

Cooper 5/10 – Did not have much chance on the goal really as it dropped and the defence did not react. Made a couple of easy saves just before the break. They did not test him outside of this but his kicking was once again poor as he kicked it out more than once.

Seriki 6/10 - First half very good again as he got forward, won the battle with Thomas and had us on the front foot. Did leave Thomas fort the headed chance though. Second half they did come onto us more and Thomas maybe shaded it and put a few crosses in. Got bounced off it and went down too easy in the build up to the goal when they sent a long throw in. Did stick to his task for the last period of the game and kept his composure.

Burrows 7.5/10 – Much better than he has been and more like his old self. He got forward well and put over some good crosses first half – the one where Brooks nearly scored. He was high up and made some good runs too. He also set up the goal with a deep corner. I will mark him down 0.5 for him just smashing it away on more than one occasion and he was careless with the ball second half when we needed some composure. Better overall though.

Bindon 6.5/10 – After a bit of a nightmare on Boxing Day, he responded with a better showing. We just need that from him – not the highs of Brum to the lows of Wrexham. He was steady and did what he had to. Some good tackles and interceptions.

Tanganga 6.5/10 – As above. Solid enough. Maybe could get more on the header on the goal (think it was him?) but it was hard to power it away maybe? He too, like Bindon, did his job with no big errors and helped us to limit them to few chances despite them penning us back.

Riedewald 7/10 –He was very good for an hour and a microcosm of our performance. Kept it nice and simple, won the ball and moved it onto teammates. He sat in front of the back four and screened any danger. We had no control of midfield at Wrexham but did for long spells tonight. He also reacted well to score the goal. After they scored, we sat back and we made no attempt to pick up loose pieces or engage and he tired badly. He was done and whilst he carried on, probably should have come off long before he did.

Soumare 7.5/10 – I have written him off but tonight he proved me and a lot of doubters wrong (at least for one night) and for an hour he was one of our best players (along with O’Hare and Burrows). He won tackles, looked strong and got across the field. He made sure we had some legs in there and could break play up but even more than this he passed it forward and was quite creative. Two or three clever threaded passes led to chances and showed us something we had not seen from him before.

O’Hare 7.5/10 – He missed a good chance and also took too long at times when he had the ball but his overall play and work ethic had him as the stand out player for me. Such a clever player but he always seems to drop on it and find gaps/play that helps us keep the ball high up the field. He was at the heart of so much of our good play and many of the half chances we created came from his running, dribbling and interplay. Does need an end product at times but suppose if we saw that, then he might be playing higher up. Had a very good season. Incredible he gets taken out and we look better with him in the side than Hamer.

Brooks 6/10 – Nothing remarkable but he did the defensive work well first half and we saw some bits and pieces of play down that side – linking with Seriki and Soumare. He is another where you want more of the final bits but he is a good team player and I do feel him and Seriki deserve a run. He offers more than Chong overall and after some good form, surprised that Wilder took him out but he does not seem to fancy him (at least for more than the odd start).

Campbell 4/10 – Our weakest player again – which I said last time we played Stoke. Looked well off the pace and the ball did not stick to him. When he had it, he made poor decisions or was sloppy with it. Ran out of gas and came off. He was given a chance tonight but not sure he took it.

Cannon 6/10 – Outside of his goal, I thought he was quiet for long spells and the ball does not stick enough. It comes off him too easily and whilst he can occasionally run the channels, I am not quite sure he offers enough. I forgot he was playing for long spells despite us controlling the first half. He never seems to be on the end of things but then he was! The goal was a really good finish and he made space, peeling off and was not an easy finish. After this we saw less of him but at least he is now getting goals – even if he is not exactly prolific.

Subs -

Bamford 6/10 – Looked more of a threat when he came on, in the sense he got in behind and made intelligent runs behind. He should have actually scored when well-placed and messed up another breakaway but then his run from the half way line led to the red card. I am concerned that he may stay as it seems the rumours are growing he may leave for the states and/or a more lucrative contract.

Arblaster 5/10 –Was hoping he may get on the ball and slow it down and help us keep it but again seemed to struggle to get up with the pace of it and the game just passed him by. Barely saw him touch the ball and he did not really give us the legs we needed at this stage. He needs a lot more games to get up to pace but tonight we looked better with Soumare in there. Just hope Peck comes back soon, as Arblaster looks a while off being near the standards we/he would want.

Chong 5/10 – Another one where we hoped he could give us more legs and help plug the gap down the side but that did not happen and Seriki was still left one on one too much.

McGuiness – Did win one header as they pumped it forward and we looked to have extra height on set plays.

Matos – Only brought on in stoppage time as Riedewald had got cramp but shows Wilder does not trust him as Riedewald looked done for the last 20 minutes.

Manager: Wilder 6/10 – For long spells we were the better side and seemed to be easing to the win. His changes worked with Burrows and Soumare playing well and Cannon scoring but then after they changed the formation and scored, we did not really adapt and should have put an extra man in the middle to match their formation but we continued with 4-4-2 and as a result it kept coming at us. WE did defend better as a team and individually but the way we run out of steam after an hour is a real concern – equally is frustrating is the way we cannot play a different way or change things to ensure we get some semblance of control in games. Teams up it and then we just seem to wilt. It is almost like we put everything into the first hour and then are kind of done.

Stoke – I discussed them only a few weeks ago saying they had done much better than I thought they would have done but I think due to Robins I still had them to finish around the middle of the league. I stand by that and think that despite the recent drop off, they will pick up some results and not but will be a long way off the playoffs and think they will finish closer to the bottom than top after seeing them twice recently. They are the same as around another 10 sides in this regard – we are one of them but of course – that will end up marooned around the middle in the end.

They were awful at the Lane and well beaten so I expected a reaction tonight with so many not turning up in the reverse fixture but it did not happen. They lost a lot of individual battles again and for the first 30-35 minutes, United for an away side, bossed it, even if we did not create much. They looked pitiful really and seemed like they were struggling to put us under any pressure. After the break, they must have known we have a drop off, but the opposite happened. The defending on both goals was awful and they did not react to second balls but the set play (corner) was their undoing again. After this they looked like they might get another hammering to us but made changes, adapted the shape and got a goal. They then had a go but it was more percentage stuff than great football although Thomas finally caused some problems. I expected them to create more but they did not really test Cooper much and in the end sort of run out of steam and Bamford could have made it even more safe. In the end, the result was about right and despite them being better for the final half hour, they did not do enough for a point and 1-2 was the right scoreline.

They will probably criticise the referee but unsure what they were asking for. The penalty appeals were desperate really – none were penalties and the 50-50’s they asked for just saw us stronger and them going to floor. The ref was at least consistent (a few against us he played on – the Seriki one just before the goal for instance) and I liked the fact he was not just blowing up when players fell over. He allowed physical contact both ways. It was a bit pathetic how they kept moaning at him when they should have looked at their own players for such a poor and weak showing for much of the game really. The red card – seen some say it was a long way from goal but he was the last man – totally unnecessary and leads to a three-match ban doesn’t it? He has form for stupid decisions like this. This kind of killed any chance of a comeback for them. I do expect them to keep dropping down the league

Opponent Man of the Match – Thomas showed flashes second half but Bae Jun Ho made a difference as he got on the ball, found space and helped them get it forward quicker.

Opponent Weak link – Pearson was not on long enough to take the award but the person he replaced Nzoni was even worse. Soumare outplayed him and won every loose ball. The lad up top Mubama has been dreadful in both games and was jeered off when they finally replaced him and they looked better without an out and out striker!

Referee / Officials – John Busby. Not someone I have heard of before. He did the defeat to Millwall this season but then also the wins at Bristol City (when he sent the lad Dickie off – in the league) and the victory over Preston. I can’t recall him being particularly controversial in these games? I have discussed him above as sensing Stoke fans will be very critical and maybe a few 50-50’s did go for us but did any huge calls that were obvious go against them? Their fans need to look at their players – barely a player appealed for the penalties at the end (neither were even that close) and many were looking for free kicks -the one at the end summed it up but Thomas twice did this first half. I liked the way he let physical contact go. The one with the 2nd ball thrown on, we had it when it came on, so was right to return it to Brooks and where he had it. Stupidity from their own fans to chuck another ball on. This seemed to set the tone for their baying for everything and as I say they were just desperate really. They lost many of the physical battles much of the game until the last half hour but were crying out for non-existent fouls. Only one other card, outside of the red card, Seriki, which was right as he was taking ages. Although not sure where he found 7 extra minutes from? Seemed excessive even if Riedewald went down a few times.

Thought Brooks had been on the piss. So slow to react and spent a lot of the game strolling and watching, same Mark as Campbell for me. Bindon was at least one point more than Tanganga and pretty much agree on the rest. Coopers kicking is terrible.

Overall that was a typical performance, they hardly got a kick first half, we should have been at least two goals to the good then when we do get in front we gift them a sloppy goal. As soon as they score we panic. Could still have put the game to bed but we miss the couple of good chances that we get and end up hanging on.

Good write up Deadbat. A win is a win is a win, scruffy or otherwise. I do think we took our time to counter Robins subbing out four and changing their shape because suddenly they looked like they'd woke up, then they scored and we had some time on the back foot to deal with them coming at us. There just seemed to be something in United tonight to be more determined not to give up a lead and possibly eventually lose - two games on the bounce and that is unforgivable. The big turning point is their sending off but I have to admit we still didn't look like we were playing a team with a hole in it. Really pleased for cannon but apart from the goal, did he actually do anything else? I mean, all Billy Shar used to do was score goals but at least he had two or three efforts on goal in a game. Cannon just chased placky bags in the wind.

Cannon actually ran about a bit tonight. He closed down, won headers and put way more effort in than Campbell who did absolutely fuck all.

Good report and ratings, cheers. Agree with you that Cannon offered nothing apart from the goal and to be honest 6 seemed pretty generous.

Thought Brooks did the defensive stuff well and at least was involved in some link play. He was ok but admit he can do better.

Isn't Campbell carrying some or other injury?

Should say - the ball that was thrown on - and hit Brooks - was actually a beach ball I think?

The Stoke fans were incredulous we got the ball back after one of their idiots essentially threw an item at our player as he was playing the game (know it was not a weapon or would do any damage) but surprise stewards did nothing or I am making too much of this? They just found it hilarious but as I say summed up their one eyed attitude on the game. Mind you Robins take not much better. Claimed it was a definite pen for the foot up - their man also had his foot up and the red card they had a covering defender - well I could not see anyone close at all? He then said Bamford got him sent off for waving an imaginary card- again did not see that?

Wouldn't surprise me if we try and offload Campbell in January. Out of the last 17 games he has started, he's only scored goals in 2 of them (Vs Pigs & Southampton). If we can get £5m+ for him then I can see Wilder being tempted to move him on and replace with someone fitter.

6 seems pretty generous for Cannon, as he didn't really do anything outside of the goal. I don't really care if he's a 1 out of 10 whilever he's scoring the winning goal though.

Having said that, we really need to upgrade our striker options in January, for me. Campbell has shown he's capable, but isn't doing it, and hasn't all season. Cannon is anonymous the vast majority of the time, and Ings has been a pretty big disappointment. Bamford is obviously our best option by a long way, but might not even be here in a few weeks.

Good report again, how you all find the energy, especially after Wrexham I have no idea. Played well for an hour,Bindon is a very young kid and will have games like the other days as we were very weak in front of him. Great result,Soumare and Burrows a huge bonus, but how can you produce form when you are bit part players?

Robins is clutching if he is trying to deflect to the officiating. I didn't see Bamford waving an imaginary card about, our players did go over and ask the question about Pearson being the last man, as I am sure Stoke would have done if it had been the other way.
It wasn't the officials that set Stoke up so negatively at home, then waited to be two goals down after an hour to change it.

The red card – seen some say it was a long way from goal but he was the last man – totally unnecessary and leads to a three-match ban doesn’t it?

Isn't it one match for "technical" fouls, depending on other reds that season.?

Thanks for the report Deadbat
When I saw our line-up I feared the worst, especially with Soumare starting as he's been awful recently. However credit to him and the rest of the players and staff because when we're playing so many games in a short space of time, it's the result that matters first and foremost. I always think it's games like these when you get an ugly 2-1 away win that are really important.

I mean, all Billy Shar used to do was score goals but at least he had two or three efforts on goal in a game. Cannon just chased placky bags in the wind.

By the time he was 30 Sharp had become an excellent player outside of the penalty area (at Championship level). It took him a long time.

Cannon might get there, but until then he simply has to be scoring goals otherwise he’s a footballing vacuum.

Yeh Cooper did look a lot more mobile last night and I think it gave the defenders a bit more confidence in operating as a unit which is vital if we're looking at moving up the table.

Agree with that report ither than...saying seriki went down too easily for the throw in that led to their goal. He was pushed in the back! Dunno how he only gets a 6 as well. Was better than Burrows who got a 7.5! I would have given seriki a 7 and Burrows a 6.5

Its a win, a scruffy one in the end but 3 points further up the table. A reverse of previous fixtures. We controlled the game for an hour then typically fell away in the last 30 minutes. We at least held out this time to get over the line. The goal we conceded said everything about our defensive set up this season. Disagree Seriki went down to easy that led to the throw, he was clearly pushed. Stoke had decided to target him after his last performance against them. He was constantly fouled and got little protection from Mr Brooks the ref not Busby. For the throw we fail to deal with the man at the front post who flicks it on. Tanganga then for some inexplicable reason heads the ball down into the penalty spot area when it would have been easier to head it away high. The goalkeeper is rooted to the spot and Burrows and others are just too slow to react to the loose ball allowing Wilmot to get his shot away. The type of goal we have conceded all too easily.

Soumare showed he can be a good player if given more starting opportunities. He is young but a far better option than Matos. Arblaster just isnt at the races at the moment and wont be for some time to come. It was a significant improvement on Wrexham. Jairo and Soumare controlled midfield and as another poster has said playing Soumare further forward with Jairo deeper worked. Credit to the coaching staff for that as was the decision to restore the Brooks/ Seriki partnership. Unfortunately the habit of not reacting to opposition tactical changes remains and we were struggling until Pearson got his customary sending off.

Like nearly all the teams in the Championship we are very inconsistent so you do wonder which Sheffield United will turn up against Leicester. Its 3 points further away from relegation and thats how the result should be viewed. Any talk of play offs is fanciful. Mee returning and Bamford signing a new contract would be a huge boost.

The JTW is shortly upon us. Without Hamer we once again looked a better team his set pieces apart. It will be interesting to see how the Board react to offers coming in.

Burrows & O’Hare joint MOTM for me ( even forgiving him for the miss ) .
Thought Buries looked back to his best & O’Hare ran tirelessly 👍⚔️ and thx for efforts this year Deadbat must take some gathering your thoughts time typing all this up 👍
