Reasons to be cheerful!

Couple of weeks time we'll be mathematically safe, which at the start of the season no football writer was predicting.

Losing games and playing poorly is shite, but look around you - nothing is right at the moment!

We dont have a big enough squad to play so many games in 6 weeks and it is unfortunate that the season had to be halted when we were on a good run. Am proud of what we have done this season.

I completely agree with that.....
But that would be a valid reason if results were declining after 2-3 weeks, not straight after the restart.

Your results this season were not predicted by any pundits, but don't include non-Blades fans in that.
A promoted side with a proper system/way of playing/philosophy goes a long way in the first season in this league.

Stoke, Swansea off the top of my head are examples of that too.

After defeats for Watford and Villa this weekend, we now need only two more points to be mathematically safe. Also it is not possible for us to finish in the bottom two because West Ham have both Villa and Watford to play in July.

Surely we’re already safe
Teams have to play each other they can’t all hit 44 points minimum

If West Ham lose both to Watford and Villa then both Villa and Watford have 45 and 46 points respectively. Watford have already played twice against Villa

But is it possible for us to still be relegated?

You'd need a supercomputer to work it out.
Yes, I have done all the calculations by using the below link. Was going to use the snipping tool to copy and paste the final table but then I closed down my calculations by accident! 😔

The likelihood is that we’ll be mathematically safe at some point during this week.

Just watching these games going by every couple of days, and with Norwich, Villa, West Ham, Bournemouth and Watford desperately trying but failing to find a win between them, just puts everything into perspective.

Yes, we’re disappointed that we’ve taken just 1 point from 3 glorified practice games, but there are numerous clubs and fans who wish they were in our position.

yeah but there are another load of teams above them and they all have to play each other

12 teams below us all can’t hit 44 or more

When did a side with 44 points or more last get relegated in the prem?

Palace with 49 points in 1992/93 went down although the table had 22 teams.

Have already done my calculations by using the below link

All the teams above Norwich can catch us, but only just, and Watford have got to play West Ham, and Villa have got to play West Ham, so they obviously can’t all take three points from every match. I’ve been trying to work out whether we are mathematically safe yet and have achieved the net result that I’ve now got a headache and I’m still not quite sure.

We have mathematically avoided in getting the wooden spoon with 7 games to go. We were pre season favourites in finishing bottom!

We currently need only 5 more points to be mathematically safe!
Getting those points may prove to be an issue though!!!

After chucking me sen all or house yesterday, I've come to the conclusion that maybe, just maybe, what going off right now could be a blessing in disguise .
Since the restart we do seem to be suffering from second season syndrome, but at a time when we have the chance to deal with it without panicking.
Plus if you take into consideration the speed with which the games are coming just now, we also get an idea what it could be like if we had European football stuck in there with the FA and the other (pick a name) cup we have to play in.
So maybe it not all doom and gloom so much as a breathing space, and a chance for our glorious leaders, to take stock of just where we are right now, and what we'll be needing to push it even further ? ......... ;)

The three away games in a row on resumption was a disgrace.
Roll on the first home league game.😊👍

For those in doubt:

Last place Norwich can't catch us. Even if they won every remaining game they'd only have 42 points.
19th place Villa can get to 45 points
18th Bournemouth can get to 48 points
17th West Ham can get to 48 points
16th Watford can get to 46 points

However, West Ham still have to play Villa and Watford. That means that for Villa to get to 45 and Watford to get to 46 they'd both have to beat West Ham, who'd then have 42 points. This could happen:

20 - Norwich <=42 points
19 - West Ham/Villa 42 points
18 - United 44 points
17 - West Ham/Villa 45 points
16 - Bournemouth 48 points

We could get relegated but only if Watford and Villa win every remaining game and West Ham win every game bar the games against Watford and Villa. That's a combined run of 17 wins in 19 games for three sides who have won 20 games out of 95 played so far.

In reality, it's two from four to join Norwich and that last day of the season game at the Taxpayers' Bowl might well be a must-win for both sides.
