Steel City Derby or Family Meal?

Long time reader of these forums, first time poster looking for people's opinions...

With the game at the rust bucket having been moved to the Sunday for TV coverage, it now clashes with my wife's grandmas birthday meal. I did tell her (when fixtures originally came out) that if it was moved to the same time as the meal, I would be watching the match and not going to the restaurant. Now she has thrown a hissy fit (and hasn't spoke to me since the announcement of sky fixtures!) In her words, 'it's just a game and they will play Sheff Weds again in the future.'

My question is, what would you guys do/choose in this situation?

Side notes: meal is exactly same time as the match and football won't be shown at the restaurant.
I would be watching on TV rather than going to the match (their ticket prices are extortionate)

Do the family thing. I don't like watching the derby on TV. I get too tense. At least at a match you can release it by screaming abuse at the opposition. Go for the meal, try to forget about the match and check the result at full time.

And bear in mind if we lose you'll feel double shit if you don't go to the meal. You'll have pissed off your family for no good reason and you'll be pissed off with the result and then start beating yourself up thinking 'why did I bother'. Not that we will though. UTB
 
Originally I thought it was your grandma, and I would have said "family, you'll miss them when they've gone".

Now I've seen it's your missus' grandma, get yourself to the pub...
 
Bloody hell I was going to make a joke about hoping for a cold snap but I thought it might have been in bad taste.
 
Put your foot down, my wife would never stop me watching United for a family do on her side even if we weren't playing Wednesday I'd be watching the football. If she threw a hissy fit I'd be even more inclined to watch the football.

Do you refer to her as your current wife, just to keep her on her toes?

you get picture no sound and get to go to the match, win-win!!
 
Take her for a meal on Saturday and tell her its Sunday, keep the rest of the family sweet with a couple of drinks, sorted, mines a moonshine:-)
 
Easy peasy,
Just as the waiter is taking the order, apologise to your missus for once mistaking her mum for her.
Tell her that, although it was great, once you turned on the light and realised your mistake you were racked with guilt and have been ever since.
After all these years, you just had to confess.
All hell breaks lose, you disappear sharply to go and watch the match.
You then return and offer to forgive her for failing the test and being so quick to judge you by believing that you would actually do such a thing.
 
Why don't you suggest that grandma comes to your house for tea instead and put on a nice buffet meal for her? It'll be cheaper and you'll get to see the match (unless your wife insists on you making the sandwiches).
 
Meal and get subscription to watch whole match later on that ifollow player thing.

You do realise McDonalds do takeouts:)
 
Sky plus/ iFollow subscription, turn off your phone for the day, enjoy family meal and lack of scorn from wife, get home, watch match as though live.

Do you live in Sheffield? If so, watch it on your phone.

If not, record it, avoid all chance of hearing the score and watch it later.
 



Get her a ticket as a present. Tek her to the game. Teach her the songs. Educate her on the history. And let her lead the charge to batter the piggy feckers...

She will be welcome in every decent minded boozer and become a legend...
