In fairness to him, I’m willing to say even his initial prediction was fair enough in the end.

I genuinely don’t mind people predicting us to go down if it’s clear they’ve got legitimate reasoning for thinking we will struggle. He obviously knew how we played, which is a lot more than can be said for some of the ex-pros at the start of the season. Everything he said was pretty much fair enough, our squad is on the older side and there was reason to doubt whether many of them could have stepped up. Of course, we had far more faith in the team given how well we did last season but from the outside looking in it appeared to be a major concern.

OK - I can accept that there was some reasoning but it was still flawed. If any of them bothered to look at the defensive record and the number of clean sheets and took note of away wins at top sides like WBA, Bees and Leeds then a reasonable conclusion would be that Dem Blayards are hard to beat.

Villa were soft and went on an amazing run to get to the play offs - that was unsustainable - and they would lose all their key loan players.

Naarch we’re playing basketball to outscore opponents (didn’t beat us, though) - a ploy that could never work in the prem because going toe to toe with the quality already there is a recipe for disaster.

I thought we had a great chance of staying up because of our defensive displays and our resilience. I’d no idea we’d end up top 10.

The podcast Not the top 20 with Ali Maxwell, in their post season review of the promoted sides, got it pretty much spot on with their views on who would be best equipped to survive. They predicted we would stay up because of the defensive strength and the Wilder factor. But then those lads know their EFL stuff inside out.

I suppose if any of us over the last ten years say (other than the last one) were asked at the beginning of the season who will be relegated how many would pick the three promoted clubs, most would, not every club every season but mostly, especially if it was a bet so teams you disliked wouldn't come in to it

Agree. It's pretty much the way it goes. And that's because there's a big gulf between the Premiership and the Championship in terms of money. So the chances are that the clubs that go down from the Prem will have a better chance of coming back up and the clubs that come back up will have a worse chance of surviving. I've said before that this is something that needs looking into, otherwise we'll end up where the same few clubs are going up and down each season between the two divisions and the rest will be too far adrift to mount a sustained challenge.

When you consider that, it's remarkable how well we have done. Let's just hope we can strengthen the team sufficiently during the summer, to preserve our Premier League status for another season. The longer this goes on, the less likely we are to be relegated, because we'll accumulate sufficient finances to be able to continue to compete. That's assuming the other major factors remain, i.e. keeping hold of a very good team manager who demands 100% of his players in every game and is tactically astute.
