No one I know is planning to congregate outside the ground, in a large group, putting on a display, gurning for the TV, for shits & giggles. But, yes, people I know will be looking to get down to the ground on matchday, to generally mooch about. It's each to their own isn't it. Some people don't have the wherewithal to watch games on TV, or their phone. Some could, but have no real interest in doing that. The football fan is a very complicated beast.

In order for society to return to some sort of normality, we have to follow rules and guidelines. If 28,000 Blades all decided to go down to the ground and 'generally mooch about' we'd be in a bit of a state.

Agreed. But I don't know 28k people. And I don't think 28k people will turn up. The OP asked whether anyone will go down to The Lane (and/or Villa Park) & I'm saying I won't, but some will.

Absolutely not. The anti-football "Karen" brigade are already out in force, decrying the restart as stupid/irresponsible etc (while celebrating the reopening of Primark et al, so they can buy cheap, shit clothes). As fans, we need to be responsible and sensible about this. Watch on TV, enjoy being able to watch football again. Do NOT give the morons any ammunition, or any sticks to beat us with.

I admire your discipline and I think, if you are in a high risk group, you're being very sensible. If you're not in a high risk group I think you are being extremely and unnecessarily cautious.

The chances of you picking up this coronavirus outdoors are extremely unlikely. The chances of you picking up this coronavirus by touching something that someone else has touched are extremely unlikely too. The chances of you being seriously ill, even if you did get the virus, are extremely small.

It's a pity that many people feel afraid to resume some semblance of normality to their lives, but I can't say I blame anyone other than the government for not making the risks much clearer and for sending out a load of confusing messages.

(There's no "treatment" for any virus btw, not in terms of a "cure" at least. And there won't be one for this either. So I wouldn't plan on stopping in until we find one).

I agree with you though, I can't see the point of going down to Bramall Lane to stand in the car park and watch the game. Now...if they put it on a big screen in the car park it may be a different matter. But we are a few months away from that unfortunately.

I'm not in a high risk category (apart from being a bit fat?) but a member of my household is, I admit I'm overly cautious, but I didn't go out that much before, I work from home, and there's nothing to go out for (pubs, cinema, football), so it's not as drastic as it sounds really.

If it was just me and I couldn't endanger anyone else, I'd probably be ready for a socially distanced pint in whatever pub opens first, but it's not, so I don't mind being overly cautious for bit longer.

I think the next couple of weeks figures will be enlightening and pave the way for some normality if they're not terrible. Lots of people have been gathering in small groups again, shops are reopening, and obviously hundreds of people have been gathering during the protests.

Perhapes the police can threaten to clampdown on any fans who congregate outside stadiums.I appreciate the police are trying to keep a low profile but anyone who stands outside a stadium is technically loitering isn't that an offence?.
Perhapes a nationwide appeal would have more clout if being arrested is a possibility or is that too draconian.

But one person may say - I don't know why anyone would go down, they can watch it at home. And another may say - I don't know why anyone would watch it at home, they can go down. What I am sure about is - there is no one size fits all approach to Football Fandom.

I fail to understand why they would want to go down when nothing is open. If you was to ask the players and management, I doubt they would be happy with people going down and would tell people to stay away. Anyone who is planning on going down, why? If the objective is to stand outside and stare at some concrete with the echoey soundtrack of a referees whistle and a ball being kicked, before being asked to leave by a security guard, then go down, but I think that is quite a niche activity.

Firstly, everyone has got to be somewhere. My view is there is a big long list of where people might be during a Closed Doors game. Out shopping. Out walking in The Peaks. In the park. 5k run. Cooking their tea. A long list. And, sat indoors watching it on TV is another more obvious one. But, given the wide variety of choices, is walking along Shoreham St all that bizarre, compared to the other choices?
Football Fandom can be about a sense of location, a sense of home, a sense of belonging, even a sense of involvement. For me, I can understand some fans seeing their support in that way. And, that manifesting itself in a NEED, a need to be on Shoreham St for example. Don't forget the Original Post was pointing out Fans ARE turning up a grounds in other European countries. So, it is not unheard of.

What are your plans then? Why have no interest in watching us on tv in our quest for a European spot? From someone who attends academy games home and away, I fail to understand why you wouldn’t be watching the match on tv. It’s possibly the only time we will ever have a genuine chance of a European spot.

I've not got the attention span to watch games properly on TV. Just the way I'm wired up I'm afraid. I don't want to overplay it. If I'm in, I'll have it on the channels I've got in the background. I attend some Academy Games home & away because I like going to games & watching them. Emphasis on "going to". By no means do I go to & watch every Utd First Team game - I've missed a lot this season. Missing the remainder is "just the way it goes" for me.

I honestly don’t know why the police even thought fans congregating outside stadiums would happen. It just wouldn’t enter a fans head because every fan will want to watch it on the telly. Even Liverpool and Leeds fans wouldn’t go, they’ll be at home or someone’s garden having a few beers and maybe a barbecue where they can celebrate a bit.

It’d make zero sense to go down to the ground. Like someone said, it’d just make you look a nob.

Trying to keep a controlled environment to minimise risk to players / staff. I went past this morning and it’s basically a checkpoint entrance to the car park with a couple of fellas in PPE.
