No, Baiter Park. Canford Cliffs is lovely though. Lived on Sandbanks for a couple of years but last few years the traffic is so bad in the holiday season it is hard to get on & off the 'bank, you could waste half a day going to the shops for essentials. It is certainly a fantastic place to live/retire to.

Totally agree.

Stan was brilliant at Rotherham and brilliant for us, slow but so commanding.... but it was all at Championship and league 1 level.
Stan was more of a Ebanks-Landell (at his best), similar style and similiar standard.

think people are looking with rose tinted glasses about Stan , not a bad player but couldn’t jump was really slow and couldn’t pass the ball , yet was a calming influence on the team and good in tackle

We signed him in 1978.

He did not feature at all in the 1983-4 season. That is because he was no longer our player!

If it's Kenworthy you're talking about, he started playing for us in 1976.

I think you are confusing the posts about MacPhail and Kenworthy with those that are about Stancliffe.

Near the boating lake? I know Sandbanks and the traffic problems, shocking with the queue for the ferry.
On a separate note, I’ve just heard we’re training today in Stanley Park and a dog’s just pissed on one of the cones. (You can do your own Pinchy/Montgomery joke).

Stan played at a time when centre backs didn’t come past the half way line unless there was a corner and moulded in a way to be a bruiser and brick wall. In today football he would have been trained to play in a different way so we can’t compare like for like he did however put his heart into being a United player which I believe Egan is doing. BTW the paring I can think of which would be used now would be the Liverpool centres of Hanson and Lawrenson.

Anyone who saw Joe Shaw play would tell you what a fabulous footballer he was. He was a centre half but not in the mould of today's variety, only small in stature , but boy could he play! It is only the fact that he was a Sheffield United player , viewed then as an unfashionable club , that prevented him from playing for England. Billy Wright was a fixture in the England team and won 100 caps , but most of them had Shaw's name written in them. Joe did get a "cap" but it was in Australia in a tour game & was not classed as official. I would not compare him to Egan , O'Connell, Stancliffe , or any of the others , different times , different players , but Joe was in a class of his own, my first ever football hero,

I was replying to comments made by someone else about Kenworthy and MacPhail. The thread quite naturally developed and people compared the merits or otherwise of other central defenders.


One poster was making the point that Egan and Kenworthy would have been a good pairing. Someone else was of the opinion that Kenworthy and MacPhail was the worst ever centre back pairing we've had.
