Derek Geary was a surprise inclusion in United's squad for the FA Cup victory over Bolton but the fans were soon singing his name after an industrious performance.

Despite not playing since September due to a knee operation, Geary came through 75 minutes before finally giving in to cramp.

"I just hoped that I'd get through the game," said Geary afterwards. "I've done a lot of work in the gym but I've not had the chance of any reserve matches so when I cramped up towards the end I told the manager to take me off because I didn't want to cost the lads a goal."

He added: "The lads were brilliant, especially the ones that have not been in the team of late, including Stevie Queen and David Carney, who were involved in the goal."

Geary came in as a late replacement for Phil Bardsley, who was ineligible for the game because he is still on loan from Manchester United.

The Irishman added: "Personally, I feel good at the moment but we will have to see how the knee reacts. Hopefully it will settle down ahead of next week and I can give the manager a selection headache."

Anyone who went to the match yesterday will agree Geary played great, then again, i an not fault any of the players performances.
