Most managers come into new clubs and focus first on ensuring the team have a strong spine.
Clough simply hasn't done this.
At the same time, he's spent a lot of money on less important positions. It just seems an odd way to go about it to me.

- We've got Howard in goal, who may be above average in this league, but is not good enough for a higher level.
- He signed Butler (and then promptly fell out with him) and Harrison. Fell out with Collins (who was probably our most reliable defender), albeit at the end of his career. He's playing a left back and utility midfielder in defence.
- The spine of our midfield this season is Doyle. We had Coady last year, but no one has yet proved to be solid in the centre.
- We all know about the striker fiasco.
At the same time, he's spent a lot of money on less important positions. It just seems an odd way to go about it to me.
