I've read a lot on here saying Speed is the "cheap option," "sideways move," "unproven" etc.. and that they would rather go out and pay for someone else (who may or may not improve the situation.)

What I want to know are: Are any of these people the same people that would've been upset if Speed had joined Swansea last season or this season?

If so,

Why did you want to keep Speed?

Where else do you think Speed can go in an upwards direction unless he gets the job?

Others saying that we should be getting a proven manager: Who ?

Alan Curbishley?
Kevin Keegan?
Bryan Robson?
Gordan Strachan?
These have all proved themselves at one point in their career for their Charlton's, Newcastle's, Middlesbrough's & Celtic's but have then "fallen off their perch" and never got the gel with other clubs since.

Jose Mourinho, Alex Ferguson & Arsene Wenger all had to start somewhere, were their first managerial appointments treated with this much uncertainty? Probably!

I say get behind the man. In terms of players (in my generation) he's been one of the best servants to the English game. Give him a chance.

Mowbray

Seasoned campainer with [I think] two promotions with WBA on his CV along with a desire to play the game the proper way.

He only got promoted once with WBA. Also lost a playoff final to derby

He would not have been in my thinking. It is his record and experience in football that puts him on my radar.

Hart and Jewel for the same reasons although I would have been un-happy with Jewel due to his links with the pigs. Childish maybe but over 30 years of banter with the porcines carves out your feelings.

I've stated many times why I have reservations about Speed but that time has passed, I've not even had ago about the situation with Ellis.

Onwards and upwards [hopefully].

Speed has a far better pedigree in football than Mowbray so who's to say he won't make a better manager. I would have gone for O'Driscoll but I can see (monetary reasons aside) why Speed is a reasonable gamble purely from his background and his reputation as a coach.

The concern about Speed is whether all the other 'managerial duties' will detract from his coaching because I would imagine that he would like to be a 'tracksuit manager' and be amongst the players 1st and foremost.

Mowbray, dont make me laff he was piss poor managing Celtic in the mighty league that is the Scots Premier, winning 17 out of 30 in whats effectively a 2 team league, with his reign ending after a 4 - 0 drubbing by the mighty St Mirren :o

Unfortunately there are no standout options available IMO, so I say why not go with Speed.

He's already a massive improvement on Blackwell and he hasnt even been confirmed in the job yet :)

Can't believe the utter bollocks being spouted about Gary Speed !
Nobody knows what kind or how good a manager he is going to be!
Lets face facts:
As a Coach he could never overide Blackwell as regards Tactics and Style of Football - The manager dictates the style and the coaches do as they are told!
As a player he is probably one of the most respected players ever to play in the Premier Division
As a player he was probably one of the most experienced players ever to play in the Premier league
As a player he represented his country in more internationals than any other outfield player
He was much sought after by several clubs willing to give him his first managers' job
He has been around the Blades players for over 3 years - he knows the wheat from the chaff
For Christs' sake give the bloke a chance
You can keep your Curbushleys, keegans, Mowbrays, etc
I for one is a very happy with Gary Speeds appointment - Not sure about keeping Sam tho'!

I'd rather have Guy Mowbray!! Anybody who can't manage Celtic in the Scots Prem is useless IMO
