I was very concerned when we were first linked to him about his injury record and potential availability versus the cost of the transfer

Putting all of that to one side this is by far and away the best signing we could have possibly hoped for this summer in terms of impact to the squad.

Considering who else he’s been linked with - if it happens the board and wilder deserve credit for pulling this one off (and I’m not usually the biggest fan of either)

If we could pull of a winger signing of a similar level on loan then I would be pretty happy with how the window was unfolding so far.

I nearly mentioned Jack Clarke in my post because we were very loosely linked with a loan move for him a few weeks ago. The star wrote an article as well to say that was the kind of quality we were aiming for. I didn’t because it’s not been mentioned since and I can’t help but think that one is a bit beyond us but we can hope right.

If we were to get Clarke and Souttar in that would be beyond anything I’d have imagined this summer.

Egan came back from a serious year long injury he sustained with us and was one of the reasons Hull went up.

O’Hare has had an ACL injury before but has been ever present for us for 2 years now.

It’s a risk but I think it’s one worth taking especially because Wilder would probably try and resign Jack Robinson instead

Players fitness changes though and some come back much stronger than before, so yes, it may be a gamble but let's keep the glass half full. Bamfords injury record with Leeds wasn't fantastic at all but touch wood, he's been fine since he joined us.

Torrix, excellent point. My lad played academy football for 8 years and did his MCL. A top surgeon who looked at it confirmed your point. He'd operated on a number of top pros and said they came back after serious injury as more robust players. The reason being they had 6-12 months where all they did was rehab, rest and recover. It allowed them to do exercises and strengthen other areas of the body to an extent they cant when fit and playing due to the constraints of 2 matches a week and all the tactical training they have to do.

Fingers crossed that Souttar will have similarly benefitted from his extended period out

2 of the years at Leicester he was fit but not used by them.

Based on his time elsewhere, there's a good chance that playing regularly would have led to himmissubg matches

Doesn't really count if he misses games because they chose not play him. It seemed like they signed him for a large fee then regretted it, I am sure this was mentioned when we first signed him on loan.

I expect they may have not played him as there may have been possible add-ons on the deal that they didn't want to activate.

When he's played regularly, he's not been available 100% of the time.

If he does sign, if, then I have to say it must be largely due to Souttar because I'm sure he could have got a move to a bigger spending club, and I'm guessing has told Leicester and/or his agent I want to move to United.

I do think this could be a Blades legend in the making.

As with Tanganga, it's a lot more about what spending a large fee stops you doing as well as potential performance/availability of the actual signing. If the fee is £5m+, the argument is, was there a less costly player available to provide a similar performance level that also allows you to strengthen elsewhere.

United are not a Souttar away from challenging for promotion

However a back four of Seriki, Tanganaga, Souttar, McAllum in front of a hopefully back to full strength Cooper should be a very good defence at championship level.

Yeah fans get excited by flair and goalscorers but just look at the top 6 last year. Other than Hull, who shipped as many as we did, tight defences were key. We outscored Millwall who came 3rd and obviously were nowhere near them.

Lotd of us have said the same for a long time but we never replaced Jack OConnell. Now to get a like for like was impossible as he was a potential international but we've needed a big @@@@ off CB for years. Souttar proved that when he was here on loan and I guess that was the thinking behind getting McGiiness in bit despite his size he just isnt good enough.

Souttar could be a game changer and hes the one gettable player that can improve us 20% in one go. We just have to keep everything crossed thay he can stay fit

Absolute colossus in his time with us, and he would still be a fantastic signing if he comes back 90% of the player he was in that period.

That said, a deal supposedly approaching £10m for a player thats had two injuries totalling over 800 days out seems incredibly risky to me. He's played 8 games since a 16 month injury and we're happy to drop that much money on him?!

Our squad is very very short on quality, so putting all our eggs in the Souttar basket feels a bit mad to me. His knee or achilles go again and he's sidelined for a year and we've broken the bank for nothing.

If he plays 46 games, we're laughing... but Sheffield United don't tend to do well on the injury front. Feeling very torn on this one.

At the time I actually thought the way we managed him had an impact on him getting injured. We were playing him every single game and even chucking him straight in after he had just arrived back from Aus.
