I remember hearing that in 1995 our players started laughing at Dave Bassett's instructions and shouting at training sessions also during the half time talk because he didnt have the respect he had.

Wonder if it is the same with Wilder?

Good point - unless you are a Ferguson or Wenger who are exceptions. Problem we had is when Wilder left on both occasions we chose poor replacements. If we’d had a proper strategy - that was the time to restructure the club when we had 2 years worth of parachute money left. Too late now…. and we could probably not afford anyone else who would come here. We are seen as a bit of a basket case club to outsiders now after the actions over the past 15 months. I hear that up here all the time….’what the hell has gone wrong with your club?’…. ownership court cases, having to sell to survive / protect the club. What a mess - £500 million to get to this point! We are a test case of how NOT to utilise your money on promotion to the Premier League.

My view, Wilder hasn't changed much. Younger players have.

I'm not sure he knows how to get a tune out of them, which is why he's falling back on needing "culture" and "experience."
It's what he knows.

It's a gamble from the club going down that route though.
Wilder doesn't look like a manager on an upward trajectory, the players he's targeting aren't either.. nor will they have much resale value.

Sell youngsters permanently. Loan youngsters in. Sign experienced players permanently...

It's why a Director of Football is needed. Wilder is doing what he thinks is best for him and therefore the club's immediate chances. We need better vision than that.

I listened to a radio discussion re: the “new breed” of young managers the other day. A consistent theme that came from them besides the dreaded “vertical football”, was the need to bring young players into an environment that includes strong guidance from experienced players…. A direct quote was “there has to be a recognizable culture being demonstrated by senior players”.
For all the stick that Wilder gets… his approach and principles of management are continuing in a new generation because they make absolute sense.
Agree with your points re: selling our youngsters but I suspect that’s driven more by our lack of money and the Squad Cost Ratio rules, which appear to force exactly that type of sale.

It was rumoured that Ferguson would have been sacked if they had not won, which if I remember correctly was a similar situation for Warnock who SUFC team had to beat QPR or he would have also been sacked
