Ligue 1 - Sommeil move "dead"
Eurosport - Sun, 15 Jul 17:15:00 2007

Valenciennes coach Antoine Kombouare has sent trialist David Sommeil back to Sheffield United after talks over a move to the Ligue 1 side fell through.

The 32-year-old defender has been in his native France in a bid to impress Komboure, but problems arose over the structure of a potential deal, leaving Komboure no choice but to tell Sommeil to pack his bags and return to England.

"It's simple. David still belongs to Sheffield," Komboure told the club's official website. "All three parties therefore need to make a big effort.

"We started the discussions two days ago, but our respective positions were too far apart.

"We preferred, therefore, to suspend the trial and let him go home. It was useless to watch him play a match with these issues still outstanding.

"The deal is nearly dead."

Guadeloupe-born Sommeil made just five appearances for Sheffield United last season, and is now facing the prospect of playing second-tier football for the first time since his days with Caens in the 1990s.

Looks like he couldnt agree a move away from us.

i rememeber Warnock announcing this signing on Radio Sheffield around this time last season, i was actually quite hopeful that he would be a good purchase.

It's a good thing that Del and Kozzy performed so much better then expected last year as it managed to mask the fact that another warnock signing did not cut the mustard, and one i would assume was on a decent weekly wage too.

Yeah i expected him to be a lot better than he actually was. No great loss though!

I bet it was probably wages that put that club off signing him.

Thats the impression i got from reading the article, i doubt there will be too many clubs willing to pay high wages for a player that has hardly kicked a ball over the past 2 seasons.

I don't think he played too badly in the performances in which he played for us. Albeit there wasn't many to conclude a decision on. He looked handy against Blackburn was it?

David Sommeil has left Sheffield United and penned a two-year deal with Ligue 1 outfit Valenciennes.

Sommeil made just five Premier League appearances for The Blades following his move from Manchester City.

City paid £3.5million for Sommeil back in January 2003 before allowing him to leave for free last summer.

The 32-year-old former Bordeaux and Rennes defender will now be hoping returning to France will kick-start his career.
