Being as I'm home already after a swift walk from New York.

A draw would have probably been a fair result. It was your typical friendly really. Disjointed and didn't help that we clearly didn't have our first 11 out at any stage.

May have got players wrong below as there were few announcements, so apologies for that.

Howard - Simo reincarnated. Great shot stopping. So so so so flappy. VERY uncertain of him.

Westlake - Looked solid at right back, did fine at left. Got forward plenty in first half.
Williams - Just not athletic enough for me. Again, did okay, but Ainsworth was excellent for them so had a job on.
Hill - Hmmmm. He's NOT a central defender, and had experienced strikers against him. Did okay is best I can say. And played better in second half.
Maguire - Good as usual, couple of small errors and Odejayi was a bloody nightmare for him in the second.

Flynn - Struggle to see how he offers a good outlet long term really. Not got the pace nor trickery. Good enough end product though.
Tonne - Very poor. Sorry Foxy and Bergs. Did little in the 45 minutes he was on.
McAllister - See above really. Despite not possibly being our worst players, Tonne and McAllister were our most disappointing.
Monty - He was Monty really. But our best midfielder of the starting four. A couple of fairly acceptable passes.

Porter - Tried hard, won little. Porter is as Porter does.
Cofie - EASILY our best player of our starting 11. Strong, great touch, dangerous. Tired quickly in second half but he was excellent overall. Stunning goal assuming he meant it.

SUBS
McMahon - very good. Got forward plenty even if Flynn ignored him. Limited Ainsworth in second much more than Westlake did.
McDonald - bit sluggish really, but still a million miles better than McAllister and Monty in the first.
Doyle - as above, but the better of the two central midfielders in the second.
Quinn - Man of the match for us IMO. If we get this Quinn through the season and he doesn't go, we'll go up. As we know, it's unlikely we will though. The archetypal excellent Quinn performance.
Cresswell - a better version of Porter. Should start with Cofie.
Miller - quite happy with his contribution. Worked hard, fair enough touch and I think he'll improve.

All in all, some very good signs, and a number of worrying ones. Only a friendly so a pinch of salt should be taken it goes without saying.

For them, Pringle was outstanding and deserved his MotM award. Ainsworth caused us shedloads of problems too and he's the type of right winger I'd really like at the lane.

Good banter between the two sets of supporters as you'd guess, and the NY stadium is a tidy little ground.

Oh, McFadzean came on of course. Looked good in the brief time he played and certainly better than Tonne. That said, it helped the game was more stretched when he was on. Liked what I saw though.

Just got back myself and the keeper does worry me too. Was hoping Long would get 2nd half if this was a fair fight for the jersey.

I agree with everything else apart from Westlake who defensively has to improve a lot. We need some quality on the wings although McFadzean looks a better prospect than Tonne. I left wondering what Tonne would be like if he ever faced the right way, he needs to be more positive to make it. Was disappointed not to see Chappell on the right as I have never seen him play before.

Howard does like to rabbit punch a lot. I'm yet to see it cost us though. He's got a kick on him as well.

It will if he carries on like that. The coaches surely wont allow it. Great kick as you say.

I'm not sure. Great goal. Looks to have potential - but also looked like he is - a 19 year old with a lot to learn. I thought Miller looked much better positionally when he came on. I'm not convinced Cofie's as pacey as many have suggetsed either.

We need a goal keeping coach, not had a decent one since Leaning. Anyone know what he's up to

I think his major problem is he is quite lazy. Cresswell will have his work cut out chasing down for him

In that case, if he learns more as the season goes on he'll be the league's top scorer IMO.

He is of course raw and made a couple of dodgy decisions later on, but on tonight's evidence he'll be our best striker this season by some distance.

.

Think thats harsh on Howard as he came for things positively but didn't always get as good contact with the ball as you'd want. I'd rather he caught them when possible but equally I'd much sooner he made up his mind to come and punch than dither on his line. Also as Foxy points out his distribution is a lot better, I can see some games when he might end up with a 'shot on target' according to stats.

Hmmm, he looked fairly indecisive to me on occasions.

There was one time in the second half in particular he was all over the bloody place.

Briefly:

Cofie looked good for me. A bit like early Kabba is the best comparison I can think of. Great goal (infront of me) and was ultimately the difference.
Keeper made some good stops but a tendency to punch it two yards in to the ground was a slight concern.
Millers put us under pressure a lot but ran out of steam and when we had what will be more like our actual midfield of Quinn, KMac and Doyle we had some decent possession and tore them apart. Prior to that we didn't really create a lot.
Tonne was unremarkable but the first half was all millers.
If McMahon was RB in the second half I thought he looked decent defensively. I agree Hill is not a partner for Harry but hopefully we won't see him there apart from in an emergency.

Pringle put some great ball in for them and smacked the bar. He'll be great for them in league two.

Stadium was really good I thought. I was on the 4th row behind their goal but it didn't feel like it. A good view. Steep seating. Feels like a bigger ground and I like that it isn't all the same all the way round so it has a bit of character.

Sadly for Ollie, no real ale to report - just a lager in Renoirs (strip club after hours) for a rather enjoyable £2 and it came with free pizza.

I hope football moving back in to Rotherham helps the town in general.

But deciding to take root on your line is decisive. If your decison is shit, it's shit, however certain you are.

I thought Howard did deserve credit for commanding his box, but also reminded us why some avoid it.

had a shocker in the 2nd half. If were in a tense match and crosses come firing in from all sides i can easily imagine him costing us points he is Simo 2.0

Agree with most of what you say,Houso. I think what tonight highlighted is that Williamson will be a big miss as will Quinn if he goes

On the Roth part, I've got a soft spot for the town these days being as the wife is from here (has a great shop near the Minster) and we live in the centre too.

It's improved immeasurably since I became acquainted with the place a few years ago and although it's got a long way to go, there are some very good signs. The ground will definitely help with that.

And on the real ale in Rotherham centre part; watch this space in 2013 ;)

i was disturb by how much of a difference was made when quinn came on if or when he goes it will be a disaster and if one thing was highlighted it was that tonne is no replacement for him

I don't think anyone could expect Tonne to be a replacement for Quinn he couldn't break into York's starting lineup.A few months older won't bring much of an improvement.

I think what Houso was talking about was on about 70 mins when there was a crossed whipped in from the left hand touchline which was well overhit and Howard went after it back peddling and flapping like a seal then missed it. I think it then bounced off a Rotherham player

I think I would like to see more of McFadzean, he seemed to have good movement. We really need Quinn however without getting rid of Cresswell and Monty we can't afford to keep him

I think withoiut further signings, the loss of Quinn would be the end of any promotion hopes this season.

I think that might be a bit extreme, although I would worry.

We nearly got promotion last season and he only played in around a third of the games...

Thanks for the reports lads.
As ever Pre Season is a chance to look at some fringe players & bed in the newbies.
I hope Tonne starts to show the early promise he had for us. Or we will have to get him out on loan again.
Did Philiskirk not play?

Quinn did? Really, I'd have thought much more than that but that's my memory for you.

We have also removed Williamson, Evans and Lowton. Lots of creativity removed and jthe jury is frimly out on the replacements.

If Flynn for Willo is anything to go by then we're in trouble.

This might be my memory again, but what's the early promise that Tonne showed? I remember a good goal but not much else?

I was being sarcastic to tell the truth based on Quinny going missing for vast amounts of last season. When he's good, he's among the best outside the top flight. Sadly, we just don't see that enough IMO.

I'm not too worried about Willo, especially if we get a winger to replace him. Agree Flynn isn't the answer.

Nonsense.
