Clarke doesn’t deserve to be talked about in the same sentence as Madine and Hanson. Don’t get me wrong, both of those provided what we needed at the time but Clarke absolutely wasn’t just “a big physical presence up top”. Firstly, he wasn’t even that and secondly he was much more than that.
yes your probably right lj but clarke did bring physical presence to our attack even if as you say he wasnt an out and out target man he was unplayable that season

It's a yes from me, him and mcburnie up top and the Senegalese Messi just behind

Some interesting suggestions there....apart from Connor Whickham

Alejandro Pozuelo

The playmaker is out of contract with Inter Miami and although there are ongoing talks regarding a new deal, he is currently a free agent as things stand. The 31-year-old has played for the likes of Real Betis, Swansea City and Genk.

The Spaniard is naturally right-footed but is adept with both feet and is incredibly versatile, allowing him to slot in almost anywhere within midfield.

Salomon Rondon

Having left Everton in December, Rondon has an impressive CV that includes the likes of Newcastle United and Zenit Saint Petersburg - where he would score the winning goal for his Russian side in a Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund.

The 33-year-old striker is now without a club and would help bolster United's attacking options for the remainder of the season.

Cristian Tello

The former Barcelona and Real Betis star most recently featured in the MLS for Los Angeles FC last term. There is a slight complication surrounding a move for Tello as although he is currently out of contract with the American side, it is understood that they have an 'option' over an extension to his deal.

United could certainly call LAFC's bluff and enter negotiations with the man who made more than 50 appearances for Barcelona, yet it seems dependent on whether or not Gareth Bale's former side decide to exercise their option for a further a year.

Jurgen Locadia

The 29-year-old free agent made more than 100 appearances at PSV during a seven year spell before eventually moving to England to join Brighton and Hove Albion in 2018.

He would score on his Premier League debut, but unfortunately his time on the south coast was a disappointing one that failed to live up to his £15million price-tag.

Jose Izquierdo

Another former Seagull, Izquierdo spent four years at Brighton and the 30-year-old winger is now looking for a new club. The Colombian was named as the best player in the Belgian top-flight in 2016 during his time with Club Brugge and the Blades could look to entice him to the Championship for nothing this month.

Connor Wickham

A name familiar to many in England, Wickham's short-term deal with Forest Green Rovers came to an end in January. Having played for the likes of Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday, the 29-year-old striker could prove to be a low-risk addition for the club.

Izzy Brown

Brown spent the 2021/22 season with Preston North End but failed to make a single appearance for the Championship club after suffering from an Achilles injury that kept him out for large parts of the season. The former Chelsea man is now looking for his 11th club and will be available for free in January.

Hatem Ben Arfa

Ben Arfa has always been a showman and the Blades could be looking for the former Paris Saint-Germain to use his trickery at Bramall Lane this season. The 35-year-old left Lille last year under a bit of a cloud after an apparent bust-up with the team's manager, something that Heckingbottom may well keep in mind before deciding to give the move a green light.

Izquierdo and Tello would give us the opportunity to play a wide from 3 (wingers).

Pozuelo is an interesting one. Very good player on his day.

If the criteria was to have previous championship experience and to be able to hit the ground running (i.e. not only just be returning from injury), as we’ve been led to believe, that list can be whittled down very, very quickly. Wickham is the only realistic option, in my mind.

Whoever it is would also have to be accepting of the likelihood they will be benched when we get players back, which may not appeal to likes of Rondon.

Can't see us going for any free transfers unless they've just been released as they'll not be match fit if they've been a few weeks or longer without a club. Can only see us signing someone on loan this window unless the takeover happens before the deadline.

Also given our budget seems to be incredibly tight could we afford someone like Rondon’s wages?

Re wages and playing time for someone like Rondon. It wouldn't be difficult to structure a deal that paid lowish wages with a veey big bonus if we went up. Playing time is never a given but looking st our injuries and back up its probably going to be as good as anywhere else in the top six of the championship

Given our history, usually opting for a former Wednesday player on a free transfer tends to go well for us.

i dont think it would be bad option to bring somebody like rondon in on a 6 months deal like you say we could offer him a bonus if we get promoted i actually think he would do well at this level even at 33

Would they need to be totally 100% match fit,Hecky might only want them on the pitch for 10 mins.

I’m sure a deal could be structured but that’s assuming we’d be the only interested party. If he wants promotion then we’d be attractive but if he just wants the highest level of compensation for his services then we don’t look capable of pushing our way to the front of the queue.

Such an unrealistic list, lazily lifted from the pages of Transfermarkt and quite possibly Wikipedia at a push.

Ben Arfa - bordering on retirement, not playing many games either. I'm sure he's probably sunning himself in the south of France. Bet he can't wait to nip up to Shirecliffe for 4 months on minimum wage to help us out!

Wickham - would be 'low risk' apparently. This guy has had huge injury problems his whole career.

Brown - another ex Pig, not played all season. Bombed out from a loan at Leeds did to attitude. Even Wilder wouldn't be tempted by this salvage job!

Pozuelo / Tello - You've finally made it to America. You're settled in Miami or LA. The family is probably nicely settled as the final step in your career approaches. The next moves needs careful thought. Yes, it's all decided. Miami to Mosborough!

Izquierdo - failing to make his mark in Belgium. Somehow can't see his Player of the Year award there SEVEN years ago swinging it.

Locadia - not sure how making 100 appearances in a seven year spell is much to shout about. With league and cup that's a very low percentage and equates to about 15 matches per season on average. Bochum, of Lys Mousset desperation fame, only kept him for six months and was last seen playing in Iran. Plays the right positions but it's a bit of an ask isn't it?

Rondon - in a weird way he could be considered because he's actually in the UK and he has played for some similar sized clubs like West Brom. He is the antithesis of what we are looking for. A Khadra replacement who presumably doesn't give a massive kick in the balls to Jebbo upon signing. 90+ cap international veteran somehow doesn't marry much with "fits nicely into our wage structure"!

Why didn't they at least go for the most valuable signings on there?:

Isco - 5 times Champions League winner but missing the Championship promotion medal to complete the set. Would relish an opportunity to compete with Ben Osborn. May face some competition from Premier League Wolves and LA Galaxy however.

Artem Dzubya - high scoring Russian veteran usually seen in European competition, last in Turkey. His views on Russia's invasion may polarise a few with him refusing to speak out and former Ukrainian team mate saying of him "I know that some of you like to show your balls on camera but now it is time for you to show your balls in real life", referring to a prior sex tape.

The ironic thing is that one of those on the list not mentioned is this guy:

Jesé - he was on loan at Stoke in the 17/18 season and even scores against Arsenal for them proving that unlike Messi, he could do it at Stoke though I can't quite raise the enthusiasm to see if any of his games were midweek AND cold and wet. Last seen actually playing some games. Scored 5 in 16 matches but wasn't happy with game time. MLS may await.

Before I forget 'please click below' 😂

Dzyuba would be good ! Proper fan favourite sort
I don’t see Russian players, who openly support Putin and the regime as picking UK as their next place to play football.

If he was going to face all the noise that would come with such a move I’d only imagine he’d go to a top flight team and not for a 4 month trip.

Who goes somewhere to get pelters away and even at home for 4 months for not much money?

On a purely footballing basis he’d be very useful but can’t see such a move happening. Not after the Russia/Ukraine thing.
