"Compensation could be too high"

and there we have it. The Board would rather save, say £1M and appoint someone less suitable for the long term. What are we talking, 6 weeks wages for Nos, unbelievable.

im honestly starting to think were gunna be stuck with carver for a lot longer then were led to believe

Unforgivable!

It shows the utter folly of spending a fortune on new contracts for the 'spine of the team'. Money that should now be spent on the man who would rightly get rid of the lot of them!

Is it The Blades Way?

It beggars belief. OK, mistakes have been made and we're lumbered with players on big contracts. OK, we don't want to spend much, if any, money on loans / transfers at this stage but we're talking about the manager, the man who could make a difference to the team and the knock-on effect that has. We've speculated to accumulate badly in the last few years and it's cost us big time but surely this is one gamble that has to be taken and I'm not convinced with the compo due from Wales, money still due for Billy, that we're talking that much.

Radio Sheffield are due to talk to SO'D today so if he comes out and says he's not interested then fair enough but if he does want the job or makes it fairly obvious that he'd be interested to talk, then for us to penny pinch our way out of it would be, I think, the final nail for a lot of fans and how much money would that cost ?

Spot on. You can arguably penny-pinch around parts of the squad in the next few months, but for a key position in determining future direction of the club we don't want to miss out on an opportunity over a relatively small amount of cash, if he is interested in joining.

indeed .. i'm watching this with interest.. if we don't get the right man i'm about ready to pack it in

I'm with you. After watching the mind-numbing rubbish that was served up all last season, its the closest I've ever come to not renewing the season ticket that I've had since the mid 80's. Any more long ball merchants brought in will mean a definite no next time the renewal comes through the letter box. I don't expect success every season, God knows if I did I wouldn't have followed The Blades for so long, but I do expect some form of entertainment for my £400.

alas i'm afraid there are many more who feel this way .................... get it wrong this time and it cud be curtains !

amen mate.. million dollar post.

Nothing like defending your club Ollie

Ollie, if some of us still want to believe in Santa, please let us. Get back to your shed.

Defending my club. To who? If some Donny fan came on here and said those things, I may have saim sumert. If I was having a beer with some Donny fans in a pub then I might have 'defended my club'. However, getting riled over what Donny fans are saying on a Doncaster Rovers fans forum is not going to help anything. They had no idea that Blades would be reading that. And like I said, there is nothing in their comments that is out of line. If you want to debate this, then please come back to me. Oh and I am typing this in my shed!?

oh and sheffielder, if a bigger club (say Man City) were after our manager do you think we would be all nice as pi on here? Hypothetically speaking, would you be like 'Oh those pesky Arabs owners are after the best manager we've ever had at our club, sure hope he doesn't go' or 'bigger club, better prospects I fully understand him thinking of leaving'.

Whether we would be able to afford him is one thing, whether he'd want to come if quite another. The fact is neither you nor I actually know whether he would or not. But from my perspective, if he believes in himself and his ability to be successful then he has more scope to be so at Bramall Lane. I've nothing against Donny, they've done great, but there is a ceiling there both in support and stadium that will limit them from progressing much further from where they are now.

And while Rovers fans think they are light years ahead of us, the truth at this time is they are only five points ahead. It wouldn't take a seismic shift for us to be above them, which until now we've always been, whatever plaudits (deserved) are levelled at their team.

Very interesting post Coily. Really got me thinking. Turning down Burnley and SUFC are very different things. Yes we have problems, but (as Pinchy later in the thread points out) we are streets ahead in fan base, stadium, facilities, academy, etc. We have loads more potential than Donny and this may encourage SOD to come.

GK: Simonsen, Wright
DF: Nosworthy, Bartley, Batth, Nosworthy, Morgan, Jordan
MF: Ward, Yeates, Montgomery, Ertl, Britton, Williamson, Quinn, Reid
FW: Henderson, Cresswell, Evans, Bogdanovic

Regardless of what people think of these players and their performance this season, they have all proved in previous recent seasons that they can be successful at Championship level (or above). There are obvious weak areas in the squad which Speed has failed to address:-

a) Four similar strikers. None with pace and skill and none who are physical target men other than the unavailable Henderson.
b) No proven Championship-quality full backs (other than Jordan) despite plenty of numbers in those positions (Calve, Lowton, France, Kozluk and Taylor)
c) No permanent centre-backs (other than Morgan), only three loanees vying for the two available places.

The first priority for any incoming manager should be to wheel and deal and address these problem positions. Everybody will have there own ideas on who should leave and who should remain but I would like to see a 20 man squad something like:-

GK: Simonsen, New GK (young!)
DF: New RB, Lowton, Bartley, New CB, Morgan, New LB, Jordan
MF: Ward, New CM, Montgomery, Britton, Williamson, Reid, Yeates
FW: New CF (pacy!), Henderson, Creswell, Bogdanovic

Out (where possible):- Wright, Aksalu, France, Calve, Nosworthy, Batth, Taylor, Kozluk, Ertl, Quinn, Evans

You forgot Montgomery. He should be forst on the list.

Calm down everyone! The poster said compo could be too high for 'one target' - not necessarily the favourite choice.

(Jim - you seem to be turning into Lenners or Mic with this outburst!)

He's just one of those "want it now" posters Broomy. Ignore him.

From the Telegraph. I take his decision to not rule himself out to be fairly positive - this could have been Speed talking about the links to the Wales job:

There's not a lot that I can say about it that isn't going to go down the line of what every other manager says when there's speculation about his position, whether it's under threat or he gets linked with another job.

Until something concrete happens I don't know what you're supposed to say. It's a big club with a great tradition and a good infrastructure and we're trying to get there with Doncaster, so I don't know what else to say.

Very interesting.

very interesting indeed! :)

To me that's about as close to coming out and saying 'come and get me' as you can get. Go get him Trev!

"It depends what they (Sheffield United) want. If an opportunity came up and I felt it was the right opportunity then you'd have to consider it."

Just read that article. That looks very much like he's interested but either hasn't been approached or hasn't been given permission to speak to us yet.

Bearing in mind what he's said, United have got to speak to him. It would be silly not to at least approach Donny and have him in the running.

I can't think of a single situation where a club approaches a manager just to chat alongside a selection of other candidates. If you approach a club to speak to their manager, it's because they are the number 1 target. The whole idea that there is some kind of mass interview process as per a normal job isn't the reality. I recall Alan Pardew a year ago saying something along the lines of him never having had a job interview for any of the clubs he managed - the 1st meeting between board and candidate tends to be the contract-offering stage, everything else is done via representatives before then.

It would be fairly disrespectful to Donny to ask to speak to their manager, have that granted, 'interview' the man and then turn around and offer the job to someone else. The only example I can think of where that has happened at any club is re: NW and Pompey, which is down to either Neil never intending to take it but simply using the opportunity to try and get a better deal at the Lane, or the 11th hour news that Redknapp would be willing to go back there.

I think your missing a couple of meetings that 'never' happened. S'OD will want to meet with McCabe/Birch and vice versa to see exactly where the club is going. They need to get a feel for each other. If we do make an official approach then a meeting or two will have already happened. You can't get that through your agent

Some claiming to be ITK on a Donny forum reckon SOD to United is a done deal but it could be bullshit who knows?!

Sorry no link as I dont have time but its on that Viking Chat forum.

Same thing being banded around a Vale forum yesterday though. I'm sure they know much as we do. The bookies can't make thier mind up either.

I'll keep my fingers crossed on SOD, but it is too close to call. Being so close to match day I can't any discussions, decisions etc going off now. Maybe early next week.

Just the same as Speed last weekend, get the game out of the way and then all systems go.
