Blackwell now must resign himself to th fact we are going nowehere in a hurry, or certainly not in the right direction anyway! Scraping a draw by playing 5 academy players that are willing to play for the shirt is forgivable.

However, playing 5 or 6 'journeymen' and loanplayers who couldnt give 2 f*cks about SUFC, now thats just not on. My call to KB is to just play some of these younger lads who've shown promise and give them a chance to prove themselves. Fed up of watching a team full of players who just collect their paycheques and dont give a toss what saturdays results are! Sort it out, and get some young blood in the team for a change, PLEASE!

I agree.

We're destined for a mid-table finish anyway, so might as well throw a few potentials in to see how they do. Who knows, we may unveil another couple of gems who we could flog for a few bob at the end of the season.

Last I heared on here there are some players close to the 1st team but are still a season or two away from being played.

What happened to the two who were playing pre-season (Brown & Roe I think)? Isn't one of those a right back? It would be worth a try for one game.

I think we are having one last push (albeit a little one lol) at getting promoted. If (when) we fail, then next season im sure we'll see a vastly different approach to team selection

And I pray it's with a new manager. The way we play, together with being behind watching paint dry entertainment wise, isn't suited to young physically developing players. I think we got lucky with the 2 Kyle's from that point of view.

I think full back is a reasonably 'protected' position in terms of style of play. A young player - not yet fully 'bulked up' and without first team experience - would struggle in midfield or up front in a team playing our style. It may be no coincidence that the two players we've brought through have both been full backs.

In relation to what Casper says, I hope that if (as I expect) the promotion push evaporates, we don't wait until next season to try something different. The last couple of months of this season will be an ideal opportunity to give some youngsters a chance. If we carry on sending out the same loan players, I'll be very disappointed.

how many right-backs does our academy need? haha

Why "so called" academy?

It has produced two fabulous players in the last year. What more can we ask?

We're outside the playoff places on goal difference, so we should drop half the side and give debuts to teenagers.

Genius.

Hopefully the academy will continue to churn out decent players and it may be that it has an even more important role to play whilever we are in financial difficulty, both in terms of providing the odd first teamer and generating revenue.

There are certainly one or two more lads on the conveyor belt worming their way through the ranks.

Connor Brown...........believe it or not, another right back
Mcfadzean (spelling)
A very promising GK in Willis, who has represented England at U16 level whilst still only 14.

There will be others. I can only think of the above.

Some more fabulous players.

To be honest I'd rather us go with the option now, with Del boy not really being able to pull in every game why don't with give this Brown a chance, he can slot into the position for games when Del boy can't play and it gives us valuable cover to the position.

And Tonge, Jagielka, Montgomery, S Quinn.... To go even further back Woodhouse, Wayne Quinn

We're not talking about half the side you idiot. Right Back is the talked about position here. Bet you thought that when Naughton played last season & When Walker popped up at centre half vs Hull in cup last year too?

Now you want those teenagers in our team more than ever don't you!!!

I saw that Brown a couple of times pre-season quite small but fast, looked decent enough.

And Tonge, Jagielka, Montgomery, S Quinn.... To go even further back Woodhouse, Wayne Quinn

None of those players were developed by the academy. They all pre-date it save Quinn who, as far as I recall, came over to the club when Alan Quinn moved from the Sty.

Tomato / Tomato!!

Academy / Youth system!

They were still all signed and nurchered by Ron Reid.

The name applied to United's youth system has changed over the years, but Jags, Tonge, SQuinn and others all came through the ranks. To say they were not Academy players is true, in as much as it wasn't called "The Acedemy" but that's all. If they changed the name of the Academy to "Algernon's Pie Shop" but it still produced players then what would be the difference?

@ Revolution

See!! Tonge (£2m), Jags (£4m), Woodhouse (£1m) W.Quinn (£800k), Naughton (£8m) Walker (£2m) all came through Algernon's Pie Shop like i said!

Monty & Quinn must be the shit two we can't sell. Maybe they hate too many Algernon Pies

This is overly simplistic. There is a great deal of difference between the Youth system pre and post academy status. It is not mere rebranding. A lot of money has been expended on new facilities for one thing, and of course there are rules about academy catchment areas that can work in our favour that did not apply before.

But yes, the players mentioned were all youth team players. Not all of them were signed or nurtured by Reid, though. W Quinn and Woodhouse definitely predate his appearance at the club and I think Jags, Tonge and Monty may do as well.

Brown still has the body of a kid, while a good talent his is in the same boat that the Kyles were in. Hopefully he will really develop this year physically just like they did. I think both Kyles shot up by a good 6/7" in the season coming up to their débuts.

But you're agreeing that they all learnt their trade and earnt Sheff Utd money when we sold them on for 100% profit?

Oh yes, no argument there. Though I couldn't give a crap about the money as it seems to be used to by worse players, as a rule.

The fact remains, however, that since the 5 million quid+ was spent on the academy only 2 players have come out of that system so far and played in league games. Both great players, admittedly...

There's a lot of players that have come through, been used in league cup, sent out on loan etc.. then released as they never make it at our level. Some others do make it, ie. Kyles.

I've heard big things about that McFadzean (spelling). Saw him play in the Milk Cup in the summer in Northern Ireland looks very good.

i've heard that a young striker called Ishmael Lammy is looking very promising
