If he stuck £600,000 in the bank he'd get bollocks all interest. £3,000 a year at current base rate of 0.5%. Of course, I doubt he'd stick all that in a current account, but he'd be doing very well to find a return of 5% (which would give him £30,000 a year).
My investments are getting around 10% even in the current climate, if I could pay a real decent adviser I'd be gutted if I was getting less.

Don't get me wrong, someone having earned £1m by their early 20's is a very lucky chap. As I say, if he has any sense, he will have bought himself a home and will thus never have to worry about rent or a mortgage. However, unless he plans on living on tins of soup from Lidl for the rest of his life, he will need to earn some money for a good few years yet. Hence, he will be pretty miserable about his career apparently going down the Swanee.

He'd have been better off buying a property for £250 k (you could have a lovely house in Garstang for that) and then buying 5 or so 80k student let terraces in Preston - coining in about 2000 grand a month in rental income net.

I suspect the last thing on young Jordan's mind was managing a property protfolio :-)

Indeed - in my first 6 years of full time employment, while still living at home with limited outgoings, I could and probably should have saved a substantial sum each month that would have allowed me into the housing market earlier and thus be practically mortgage free now taking relative price increases into account.

However in my late teens/early twenties I spunked most of it on ahem, essential activities, and I probably wouldn't change it if I could go back.

That said I wasn't earning a million!

I was an utterly boring young man, shacked up with someone aged 23 and was a father aged 25. We pooled our resources and bought something at the bottom of the market in the early 90's. Long story short, we split up, I bought her out and 10 years later discovered I had amassed oodles of unearned capital in the house. I sold up, moved to Kent and live mortgage free.

All complete and utter luck.

He has now joined the mighty Cambridge on a free transfer.

I wonder if he will sack Rankine as his agent.

Slew Joined Cambridge United. Ian Rankine is his agent?

Serious point. Would George Long have been a "billy big bollocks" if a big club had come in for him just over a year ago and he'd gone? If he'd stayed on to get "wool on his back and repay his development club" do you think he would have done the right thing? Slew's career would likely have ground to a halt with us, just like Long's and in the meantime he would have been earning about a grand a week.:(

The difference is, long played a lot of games. I don't think its about repaying the development club, it's about developing properly. I'd be surprised if long doesn't return better for his experience away this time. There also seems to be a different attitude with players like reed, Kennedy and long.

I suppose you could put Diego into the same category as Slew at the moment

Arguably Slew would say he had more opportunity to become a better player learning from Blackburn's strikers than, say Chris Porter and Richard Cresswell. Its an easy one to say "oh he only went for the money" but there is an element of career progression in there; would you stay at the same local business, or join a larger firm with more potential and scope for development of your skills that would help you down the line? While this move ultimately didnt work out I dont think every transfer is as mercenary as made out.
Plus every footballer is told from an early age how brilliant they are; perhaps Slew genuinely thought he could make it?

Yeah the Blackburn experience has clearly worked for Slew... The key to moving to a higher ranked club is playing competitive games at a higher level

In hindsight, no, it didn't. But in Slew's mind when Blackburn are interested he's thinking: a) will I get better as a player? b) will I get experience playing against better players? c) Do I fancy myself being able to break into their side? ..and yes probably d) will I get higher pay?
And the answer Slew thought was Yes to all those questions.
If every player thought they'd be better off staying where they were, then no-one would move. I just think the easy assumption is "he's just gone for the money" when I think there is a genuine desire to progress your career in the overwhelming majority of all football transfers.
