I think that is true of many teams since there have been no fans but I think we at Sheffield United have suffered the most because of the lack of fans .

Bramall Lane is such a special place. It's a goal head start and that is certainly true because after there were no fans we hardly scored a goal and consequently no games and now we are down.

It was not just that of course but the difference was stark . :(

Whether the fans have been affected more or not, which is open to debate, I don't think it can be argued that no club in the entire bleeding world has been more affected by this virus than Sheffield United, when you look at the position before and after.

If that's not proof of a curse then I don't know what is.

Possibly, but let’s move on from that debate

Yeah but West Ham fans must be feeling pretty shit about themselves.

Well although I cannot physically make a difference on the pitch, I’d like to think that my singing, shouting, applauding helps to SUPPORT the team towards a positive outcome, otherwise why would I do it? This season is an anomaly, unfortunately with real outcomes. Bramall Lane crowds are something special, that’s why I fell in love with the Blades in the first place.

Yep, felt like I knew all this would happen once the pandemic hit. It killed our momentum, the reaction to it by the club was poor. Players came back unfit. No fans to lift them despite all this. Wilder who has overcome a lot in his managerial career and even he couldn’t adapt to this.

Kicking myself for not betting on it. That said this is what Sheffield United do, so not a complete surprise everything has turned into a shit sandwich. It was too good to last under Wilder.

I think the no fans issue has impacted clubs differently. I believe clubs like West Ham probably have benefitted because the anti owner stuff was so toxic there. The lack of fans for them in that regard at least has probably been a plus. That said the Geordies are hardly benefiting from the removal of anti Ashley protests so maybe that counters that argument.
Enough opposition players and managers have commented over the years about the atmosphere at BL to believe there’s something to the argument but whether that in itself would have been enough to drag us out of danger is a different question entirely. We’re well adrift so we’d have had to be bloody good for us to have made that much difference

It can also be difficult place to play ! The fans are not slow (not all) to get at the players when we are poor as I have witnessed many times.
Make a poor start as we did and things could have turned ugly! as we have seen before.
We seem to have short memories.

Well I did say that it is not just that and it's not of course. But on top of all this we have had quite a few long-time injuries and when you have a small squad - which we have - it is not easy and we can bemoan the cards we have been dealt this season.

And if all this sounds like sour grapes that is because it is ! :) :(

Even the neutrals agree we're speshal 🥴

Though i've noticed no one is saying Wendy really miss their fans 😊

Even allowing for the propensity of us Blades to be contrary from time to time, it's difficult to understand how anybody can maintain that playing matches in training pitch conditions hasn't negatively impacted us more than it has any other club in the division.

Moreover, it's not as if it wasn't completely predictable. I was gutted when it was announced that football would resume last June. I recall telling a mate who is an Arsenal fan, before the games even resumed, that playing behind closed doors would kill us and that our brilliant season would just fizzle out.

Even allowing for everything else that has befallen us this season, there is still absolutely no way that 11 teams (and counting) would have come to the Lane and helped themselves to the points. And, it's not just about the extra impetus that our players get from the crowd. Even the top players in the better opposition sides are affected mentally when they step out into the bearpit that the Lane can be. They are less confident, less comfortable and less 'on the front-foot'.

And it is lazy to say that it is the same for everyone. The relative or perceived status of each club in any given fixture is a big factor in how a crowd behaves. Thus, last season our crowd knew that we were the underdogs in literally every match and were, consequently, four-square behind the team home and away.

The corollary of that underdog status was that, on our travels, every opponent we faced was playing in front of a home crowd who expected to beat us and that, therefore, created additional pressure on the home sides. The longer we could stay in games, the more pressure and tension seeped into the home sides.

It was no accident that, up until lockdown, only Liverpool and Man City - the 2 sides with such a gulf in quality as to override the crowd effect - had managed to beat us in our away games. It was in many respects the same effect that we ourselves actually suffer from ourselves when we are in the lower divisions; just think of the pressure and tensions that transmits from the stands when we're struggling against unfashionable visitors in the Championship or League 1.

Training ground football swept away that double crowd advantage that we benefitted from.

Some other clubs will have suffered in one way or another, of course - for instance, Liverpool and Leeds will say that they lost the effect of their home crowds - but many have been neutral or even benefitted - for instance, West Ham and Man U who have impatient crowds that are quiet save when they're being critical have noticeably been relieved of pressure in their play - from playing in sterile conditions.

I don't really see the point in making excuses. It's pretty similar to whining and we're probably up there with scousers in terms of whining.

Excellent post and I agree with every word.
