This season summed up

  • Disastrous start
  • Managerial change
  • Strong period
  • Relegation unlikely
  • Faint play off hopes
  • Inconsistent/poor ending

Similar seasons:

1999/2000
Neil Warnock replaced Adrian Heath and improved results quickly, taking us away from the relegation zone. But there was a hangover, as we didn't win a match after the middle of March.

2013/14
Nigel Clough replaced David Weir, and we went on a strong run both in the league and in the cup. Relegation fears were ended, but again in mid-march we lost form and couldn't get in the Play offs.

Any more?

Maybe we can take some comfort in the above? We were heading for relegation on these three occasions. A managerial change helped, but as the Play Offs proved to be a bridge too far, momentum and morale took a hit and we were rather disappointing towards the end.

On both previous occasions, two underwhelming seasons followed, before a great one (2002/03 and 2016/17). We can hope we don't have to wait as long this time...

I could always look it up, but what happened during the close season and then the following season?

1973/74
Ken Furphy replaced John Harris (who then went "upstairs") after we had won three at home and three away. 16 points from 17 games (2 points for a win) at the end of the season we got 40 points from 42 games, seven wins at home and seven wins away. If we win at Derby on Saturday then we won nine at home and nine away!

2000/01 and 2001/02 were average seasons where Warnock gradually improved the team, leading to the peak season 02/03. Ndlovu, Asaba, Pesky, Page, McCall, Kenny, Allison, Kabba, Windass were signed cheaply/on frees. The likes of Bent, Woodhouse, Quinn, Devlin were sold and brought some money in. Young Jags, Monty and Tonge became key players.

Clough got us into the play offs in 2014/15, but we had struggled towards the end of that season and were knocked out by Swindon. Adkins came in, but we continued to regress. Players like Basham, Freeman, Coutts, Basham and Sharp went on to become important players in Wilder's 2016/17 promotion side.

Slightly different perspective but there are definitely elements of last season in this

Unbelievably efficient against the bad teams
Struggle to find consistency against better teams
Fast starts in a lot of games, very timid 2nd halves
3-1 home wins against very good teams not heralding a watershed/lightbulb moment
Derby wins taking on outsized importance
January window arguably making the team worse
