Someone said in a different thread that all Clough's signings had gone on to worse clubs then I got thinking about good players we sold like Murphy and Blackman and realised both were Wilson signings so I thought i'd see just how many of each of their signings actually moved on for the better or worse...

KEY: - (lower division), + (higher division), = (same division/still here)

I don't really know what that shows other than of Cloughs 18 players only 7 are still here and available for selection. 7 are out on loan the other 4 sold.

Weir brought in potentially 2 very good midfield players in Baxter and Cuvelier although we all know what happened to those two and 4 totally rubbish players.

2 of Wilson's signings are still here and 3 went on to better things. 3 retired.

Adkins has only signed 2 players.

After listing that down, this shows that Adkins should be given time. As Phipps said, it will take him time to sort out previous the previous transfer mess. They have only given him funds to sign 2 permanent players which suggests the statement from Phipps is true. Get shut of the dross and build your new empire.

God that was depressing.

I reckon Clough had the biggest budget in terms of 'new money'. He inherited fewer good players but his signings with a good budget were poor - and yes, I blame his brother as much as him!!

Adkins' signings have been abysmal. To start with they appeared random signings unrelated to the needs in the squad, with the exception of Sharp, of course we needed a goalscorer.

Why exactly?

If the board didn't trust him to sign permanent players last season, why will they trust him next time round? And even if they did, what signs has he shown that he'd sign anything other than ageing journeymen?

I think his signings have been hit and miss.

Decent:

Sharp
Edgar
Baptiste

Poor:

Hammond
Woolford

I am not counting Sammon as I really don't think he wanted to sign him.

Bryan Robson still plays for Aberdeen, unless you classified moving to Scotland as "end of career"?

It pretty much is just ask Nade. He spends most of his time eating pasties and not doing his job around here. :)

Bloody hell. I didn't know that his lack of managerial jobs had forced him to put the boots back on.

Barry Robson may well have played for us as though he was a month away from rightfully being retired from service, but is somehow still stealing a wage up in Aberdeen.

It's not just about 'trust', they weren't prepared to pay for it.

Just my opinion:

Decent, but expensive. Arguably not needed (McNulty has a better goals per game L1 record)
Sharp

Inadequate impact
Edgar
Baptiste (decent rep but no good injured)
Sammon
Hammond
Woolford

Because they have given him limited funds compared to the previous fuckwit that signed some total numpties.

True. But trust is clearly an issue, post-Clough - Adkins being subservient to the Technical Board, etc. No denying the board/owners have imposed austerity measures though.

Even so, I really don't think Adkins was unaware of the financial situation, or the constraints he'd be working under, coming into the job. And he was the one all but guaranteeing promotion at the start of the season (partly based on him adding Dean Hammond to the squad), despite these constraints.

Was he? I thought I heard him say we weren't good enough for promotion (just before or just after he said Murphy was going nowhere).
He may have said our aim is promotion but as a manager of SUFC in L1, you can't really say anything else.

The sacking of Wilson, I still don't get. Good signings. No control over the Ched fiasco. One kick away from promotion.
What I'd give for a side that played that well again in this league, if you'll remember that our first year in this division it contained:

Charlton (promoted), Pigs (promoted) Huddersfield (promoted) Bournemouth (11th), Preston NE (15th).

We've a side struggling to beat Shrewsbury, Colchester and Crewe at home.

There were as many reasons to sack Wilson as there are Adkins; poor football (2nd season), poor signings (Kitson, Robson, Higginbottom, Cofie, Forte, Westlake, Williams, McMahon, Beattie), always got it wrong when we had a key player missing (like playing Monty and Doyle in CM at pigs, when we'd tried it earlier in the season and it hadn't worked) but sacking Wilson proved to be of no advantage to us at all.

There was little new money. Factor in the number out on loan, the Murphy money and the Old Trafford cup money.

I am sure that Kitson was a surprise to Wilson. Kitson was a neighbour of Simon McCabe from memory, and I heard he literally turned up at the training ground and told Wilson he was part of the team.

Yes, I threw Kitson in because I wanted to remind people of how the board likes to interfere and if NA is getting blamed for Sammon then DW can take the rap for Kitson.

Apart from Sharp [and Brayford pre injury] we wouldn't keep/want any of them.

What a waste of five years.

So you wouldn't keep Kevin McDonald, Jamie Murphy, Nick Blackman or Che Adams?

To dream of a team like this:

Long
Brayford Edgar McEverley Done
Blackman Reed Coutts Murphy
Sharp Adams
The clearout wouldn't be half as bad. New LB, New CB, New CM.
