Well okay... 44. But the table shows 42. And I'm a bit obsessed with the significance of the 20-game mark. Only two teams in the last 15 years have failed to get promoted of the 25 teams with 40+ points from 20 games (one of them Leeds last season). Of the 23 that did get promoted, 20 made it via automatics. See table below.

Of course, nothing is set in tablets of stone. We could have a miraculous decline. But realistically, Boro, Blackburn, WBA and Watford are almost certainly not going to make the automatics and very unlikely to overtake our final tally. Which leaves Sunderland, Burnley and Leeds. I expect Leeds to keep up their PPG (2.05) and make top 2 - best squad. Burnley probably have second best squad, but are so weird; a team that seemingly can defend but cannot attack. And then Sunderland, who look pretty good, but also pretty young and potentially that's a downside in the post-xmas slog. All four in it, but as soon as any gap opens up, it becomes increasingly unlikely for a team to claw it back. The top 4 simply don't drop enough points.

Then there's us. And it kinda feels like we're due a regression of a kind; I'm sure that'll happen. Let's say our points tally for the rest of the season drops off around 20%, from 2.20 ppg now to 1.80 ppg for the rest of the season. Our final total would still be.... erm, 89 points, which will be enough automatics, or at least likely within 1x game margin of the top 2.

I raise all this because last night at Millwall the negativity of some fans was utterly ridiculous at times (some people around me anyhow - young and old). It's almost as if people forget that there's an opposition to play, and they aren't just going to roll over. We're going to lose games and teams are going to gain ground at some point (like Boro did in Hecky promotion). But there's no reason to think over the rest of the season that our form will deviate any more than anyone else's. Just wish some fans - and by no means all - could be a bit more positive, and ideally a bit more vocal. We're in the best position in a Championship season for two decades, a better than 50% chance of promotion. Better off enjoying it now, cos whatever happens, next season won't be as fun.

TL;DR -- don't forget the maths!

In terms of our second half to this season, I echo the point made by Roygbiv on BP when he said there's no logical reason why our team can't improve. The performances have all felt a bit third/fourth gear which is understandable from a squad that last night started with only 4 players (Robbo, Souza, Hamer & Brewster) who were with the club last season. The results we've achieved with a brand new group, that hasn't been bought with blank cheques, has been nothing short of magnificent.

Plenty of younger players should get better, I still feel we haven't seen the peak of our players except perhaps for Cooper, Souttar & Souza who have been consistently MOTM material. In recent games we've seen the likes of Seriki, McCallum, Robinson, T.Davies & Brewster (last night) all show that they can come into the side and make a huge contribution.

I still expect Burnley to finish second as they have alot of quality to return from injury and a Manager with a decent & recent track record of promotion out of this division.

I think Burnley's squad might just have too much over 46 games. But we've given ourselves a huge chance to stop them.

In terms of improvements. I can see that happening. But we could end up in a weird situation where improved performances don't turn into more points.

So Steve Mackan , presuming you have the dirties in first place are you marking us down as playoffs at best?
I hope we get automatic, although we are due to break the playoffs voodoo…. surely…..:)

Leeds were certainly unlucky to have a bit of a freak year with three runaway sides. Brighton finished on 89 points and only missed out on automatics by goal difference.

16 more wins gets us to 90 points.

If we're not getting 4 points per game from January then the lot of them can fucking do one

I sincerely hope we get automatics but I do feel that Burnley will have too much for us, but maybe that's 2009 (and maybe 2022) trauma talking!

I'll give you a firmer answer on 01/02/25 💰✍🏽

I have us second if we win the next two games... Simply have to make a gap as early as possible in my view. If we can get a double-digit gap to third at any point in next 8 games, then the third-placed team would find that incredibly hard to claw back.

Getting shared without credit here Steve Mackan

If it spawns some extra noise at Bramall Lane on Saturday, I don't care. "Your PPG is f**king shit"

Bollocks to 2nd, high time we went up as Champions. Leeds may have the flair but we are simply more consistent.

By the time January comes around we will have a really good idea of where we stand. Look at the thread for predictions for the last 5 games. 11 points is a great haul that many didn't predict.

If the above wasn't evidence enough, I am no fatalist.
You're also forgetting this is Sheffield United and we are capable of finding hitherto new and undiscovered ways of fucking up.

Joking aside, we keep digging out results without playing that well, certainly not for sustained periods and that's always the sign of a successful team. I do still think the squad is a bit thin and with Blaster out for the rest of the season and the injury records of Davies and Brewster, I think we need reinforcements in January if we are to seriously challenge for automatic, particularly another strong central midfielder and a forward/striker. I never thought I'd say it after last season, but if Vini is out for a prolonged period, that would leave a big hole in the midfield to fill.

Wilder has said as much in his comments a couple of weeks ago about the takeover saga.

I’ve said this before. Getting promoted is about being a LITTLE bit better than everyone else.
Most of Southampton and Birmingham’s results last season were exactly the same. Southampton had better results in the other 25% to 30% of games, so they got promoted and Birmingham got relegated.
We just need to keep being a bit better for the full season, which is easier said than done.

I love this way of explaining it. And it's particularly true in the championship, as opposed to say the pl

Could you format the Finish column to remove the 2 decimal places please? thanks :D

We're on 44 points if he remove the 2 point deduction.

I think it's important to do that when comparing us to other years as it's a reflection of how we're actually playing

4 teams for the top 2 and could be any 2 of united leeds burnley and sunderland in any case think theres only 2 spots left for playoffs middlesbro and west brom for me

I know... it is annoying. But needed numerical value rather than 1st, 2nd, play-off for sorting reasons.

Yes, but 44 points isn't an accurate reflection of the table in this instance. Certainly is in terms of our ppg.

Bring back the Steve Mackan match day diaries! Does he still have ownership of the Nissan Cube? I’m eager to find out.

On the noise / atmosphere point, I get it I’m afraid.

Although we’re smashing this season, I think there’s a collective reservation that’s natural to Blade’s fans, that we’ll mess it up somehow.

But, more pertinently, there is definitely something of a collective hangover from last season, for me especially, that’s completely drained me of excitement for football in general. This is something that gets better with results and performances naturally, but there’s the black cloud of another potentially bad PL season on the horizon.

Personally, I’m starting to enjoy it again with an attitude of hopefully we’ll have learned from last season should we be promoted, but I don’t blame the fan base for a collective lack of optimism about playing against the big boys again.

We’re just unfortunately in that position of being a yo-yo team, so the highs are high and the lows are low. The difference being, the lows at this level aren’t on the global stage, and no matter how much you love the club, it’s never going to be exciting getting schooled and criticised by everyone in the top flight.

Just my two cents.

I think Boxing Day is going to be a pivotal point in our season......
We all know we need 2-3 players in Jan, we all hope we get them, but its also a game that sets us up for the second half of the season, where momentum and confidence are the 12th and 13th man, and a win against another top 3 team would be bloody lovely!!

UTB!

The reason that will stop us getting promoted is squad depth. If one or two players drop form we don’t have adequate replacements for them. This will drop us points and cost us dearly.

January will be the defining month for us. We need 4 players. Leeds / Boro / Burnley will all strengthen and all have better depth than we do already.

Every game I look at the bench and it just seems to be getting younger and younger.

PA refinanced £5m a short while ago we only need say half of that to bring some loans in and a permanent from somewhere.

I agree. I think the Burnley/West Brom games will be big ones. 4 points or more from those and we are laughing (albeit in a Bladey, not getting ahead of ourselves kind of way!).
