I remember Monty doing a fine job on Patrick Vieira in the cup against Arsenal a few years ago. Maybe we should try the same on Taarabt on 4th April?

Not sure how else we'll stop him other than wind him up so he does something stupid!!

He missed their game due to a family bereavement. RIP but hopefully the match is on the day of the funeral.

No - I dont believe in man marking someone in a free role (which is effectively what he has). He plays in pockets of space and his movement is exceptional. If we detail anyone to man mark him he will pull that player all over the park and mess up our shape.....QPR's other good players will then be free to run riot.

Taarabt generally doesnt get involved until the ball is in the oppo half and he will almost always try to come inside. The best thing to do is to keep our shape nice and compact so to deny him an opportunity to cut inside and shoot. This may allow their wide players (i.e. Routledge) a little more time and space but it is better not to get too tight to them as they will run in behind our full back every time. QPR adopt a clever ploy of trying to use their wide players to stretch the opposition, allowing Taarabt a lot of space down the middle to exploit.

It just a case of staying nice and compact so that their main playmakers find it more difficult to hurt us. By marking up any of them we would be in danger of getting pulled all over the place and out of position. They're a strong side and we will have to try and soak up pressure for large periods of the game whatever we do, so disciplined positioning is the way forward IMO. If we try to man mark they will annihilate us!

That can't be right. Don't forget they have a clueless, tactical dinasour as their manager, so I expect they'll just kick the ball as high and long as possible and chase after it.

Play the kids, don't get anyone injured, give them the three points and see what we can get out of the remaining games.

I have an idea let them worry about us for once, Sir Neil knows we will be buzzing after the leeds win and would be happy with a point, Monty will sort him out anyway we need to stick with the same 11.

Give over you daft sod. Play like we did on Saturday and I don't see why we can't grind out a point.

Get a gun and shoot the bugger! :D

Or just try and play like Saturday and hope for a result.

I'm sure this thread will get moved to the QPR match thread, but i'll make my comments here.

Unless Monty is fully fit then we shouldn't man mark Taarabt. I also don't think he's the only danger.

So for me its a case of having confidence in the team that beat Leeds to go on and beat/ match QPR which will be a major factor.

If we do then we should look to go with the 4-3-3, but we have to attack them. We can't go there with a 3 man midfield and expect to get a result by defending.

Personally though, I thought first half Nosworthy was too exposed and had no cover in front of him as the midfield was naturally drawn out left.

So for me switching back to 4-4-2 and putting Riise in on the right, then dropping Boggy to the bench would be the ideal switch. But again we can't go there to defend. We seem to perform better against teams who like to get forward, QPR being at home and wanting to seal the league will surely go for it. This should play to our (few) strengths.

Good comment about Nozza, Swiss.
He did well but he was left exposed several times and I seem to remember QPR ripped that flank to pieces back in the August sunshine.
Play the same way at QPR and it'll be a cricket score.
Well as we played on Saturday we'll not come up against a team as accommodating as Leeds again this season.
Our only hope is winning all our home games and that's a mighty turn round in form.

we'd be better off asking the coach driver to run him over in the car park. Taarabt is premier class, our lads sadly aren't. We could man mark him but then that just frees up quality players such as Routledge and Faulin. Just take the defeat on the chin, hope they don't score too many and concentrate on the likes of the dingles

Incidentally I did think Nos had one of his best games on sat.

Yeah you're right Lenners, QPR ripped us apart down our right and on the counter attack.

Do you think Leeds were just accommodating or that we played very well? I think it was a bit of both to be honest.

Lets just hope that Micky sticks to his guns and keeps Collins away from first team action. Lowton did a decent job in there.

Its time for Sir Neil to show he is still a United fan and let us win 3-0.

I remember Monty doing a man marking job on both Scholes and Lampard in the Premiership, in fact Lampard did heap praise on Monty because he kept Lampard out of the game at BDTBL. The only shot he got was the one that Kenny jumped out of the way of.

So Yes, put Monty on him. Doyle is more than enough for Hariederson(sp) with Quinn and Riise containing the wide men

Yeah I remember that, raving success it was................we lost every game against them both

Taarabt is a petulant wanker, but he can play a bit and would take the piss out of Monty, as most do in reality, despite the bollocks they spout after the game. Let him have his yard of space, better to defend in front of him as he's a real one trick pony truth be told. Greedy bastard, seldom passes and if he hasn't done a deal first ten minutes he'll sulk. Let him get on with it, QPR have a good squad of talented players, concentrating all your efforts on stopping just the one of them would be a big mistake.

man mark there star player, doyle to watch hieridersson(sp) :), qhinn n riise containing?
this is NOT the way we should play, IF our defence can hold firm the 4 midfielders should be good enough to wreak havoc on thier midfield, let thier wide men worry about quinn and riise, not visa versa.
we need wins, our GD is appalling, go out attacking, cause them problems, wind them up and forget "take the loss" or "a good point" we can win it, we've all seen QPR going forward and they are GOOD, but i dont think thier defence is as solid as clean sheets suggest, i think if we put pressure on like we did vs dirties they will crack.
most teams ive seen them play this season have played defensive probably because of the threat thier attackers have, but one or two have matched them going forward and scored.
we definately have the fire power if ched n vokes play up top of a 4-4-2. if quinn n riise can supply the ammo thier defence could be cracked open.
WE CAN WIN IT!!!!

Agree with that. Just sit Monty in front of the back four and let him sweep up anything that comes into the middle.

I'd stick Monty on him, he's great at stopping teams play. Monty can run all day and is at his best when he hasn't got the ball so this role is ideal for him.

Yup, put Monty on Taarabt and turn it into a ten-a-side affair. I'd say a draw is achievable, but I doubt our back four can hold out. And our attack certainly won't survive on scraps.

**crosses fingers**

I'd send the midfield out with strict instructions to hit Taarabt with a reducer in the first few minutes, and keep on kicking lumps out of him through the game.

Sean Derry is no shrinking violet, but i think the key to us playing well, and trying to get something out of the game is to turn midfield in to a battlefield.

20 years ago I would have said that's not a bad idea but given the poncey nature of football now and the way referees stop the game for every little thing.....we would be lucky to finish the game without abandonment. You have to remember who we are as well. Only the Manchester United's and West Ham's of this world can get away with those sort of tactics.

Our best hope is to borrow Gillingham's kit and field an extremely defensive line up. History tells us that Warnock has no idea how to beat Gillingham at home.

Anyone else think part of the reason why Taarabt has done so well is because Derry has done a job on the opposition "enforcer" trying to man mark Taarabt?

We'll need to wind Derry up as well.

I don't think Monty is at full fitness to do a proper marking job on Taarabt anyway.

When he's at full fitness, Montgomery can do an excellent man marking job. I can recall his effort against Manchester City in October 2001, when he man marked Ali Bernarbia, City's answer to Taraabt.

QPR are not Barcelona. I dont see why we cant go there and get a result. But I agree with the sentiment that we will have to turn it into a physical battle as they have far more skill than us. That said, Warnock will be expecting this tactic and I am sure has a counter tactic lined up.

Could it be that Monty is the key man in this game and QPR will want to man mark him

Except when we last played them and Peschi scored a great Hattrick past them a few January's ago

Yes, in an away game...

The Monty myth is alive and well.

For the record:

The Maestro did not mark Lampard out of the game. Lampard made the second goal with a run and cross for Bollock to head home.

Frank Lampard did not heap praise on Monty. He never has; nor have Gerrard or Vieira or anyone else of any consequence. The vast archives of material available on the Internet and other media are available to anyone who wishes to prove me wrong :)

Let's get this straight. Quality players love playing against the likes of Monty. To them, he is little more than a traffic cone (the cone is slightly more mobile).

We  Hoofing.
