I think the ends justify the means when shooting from range, if we have the chance to play into the box but instead we blast it into the air 20 feet too high then the fans are frustrated, but if we come close or force a save then there is no problem taking the shot, yet the result is the same (unless we get a corner). But overall do you think we shoot from range enough or not enough.

I think when we push in but get defended against well then the midfield get frustrated and are more likely to let one loose, but often in these situations it would be better to cross it in, so I'm sure that there will be plenty of opinions bellow.

In particular I think Evans has been taking a lot of long range shots recently and has come close to scoring alot and he is definiatly capable.

It's usually best not to take a shot from distance unless a bunch of factors (decent position, ball is somewhat under control, lack of players between ball and goal, player is actually good at shooting from range etc) align correctly or if the state of the game (i.e. level/down one late in the game) requires a volume over quality approach. Otherwise the analytics indicate that it's normally best to work towards creating higher quality chances even if you get less of them.

I'm more annoyed at not doing things such as Blackman not going up when we won a corner halfway through first half injury time where Millwall had zero time to break away, zero downside to doing that

This is a good example of how bad we can be at rationally assessing risk.

If you watch MOTD you see all of the long-distance shots that result in goals. They rarely show you the dozens of other shots that don't. Even when watching matches people remember the shots that go in and hardly remember the misses. As a result, you have a massively disproportionate instinct for the likelihood of a long-distance shot resulting in a goal.

The statistics show that there's a 2-3% chance of scoring from a shot outside the box - that's about one in every 50 attempts.

This is why fans constantly shout 'shoot', and professional players usually ignore them.

If you're able to find the time and space to get a shot away in the area of the pitch just outside the box (as in, a couple of yards) from a central-ish position, then I think it's worth shooting.
For example, the position from which Fleck had a go after his lovely jinking run vs Millwall on Saturday. A strong enough hit with decent accuracy in that sort of position is difficult even for a good keeper to stop. Fleck's shot was too central to go in but had it been a bit closer to either corner I think it would've been a goal.

The problem is getting space in that position in the first place. Hitting it from even slightly further back will often result in the shot blocked, an easy save or going wide due to being too far out.

Our fans have complained a lot this season about conceding 'worldies' but I don't think this is true. A few, for sure (Neves comes to mind), but many of the shots have been in this exact area i'm talking about. They're well hit, powerful shots but nothing extraordinarily special by any means. This division has a lot of quality players who, given the time and space to shoot, will invariably hurt you.
The best way to stop them is to avoid even giving them that initial space. This is where our defence needs to improve. We do well to protect the box most of the time but forget that protecting the space just outside it is also really important, as it's in this space that the crucial through ball, cross or shot is taken. Too often we let them have this space, which gives the opposition attacking players the time to make an unhurried effort which is substantially more likely to result in a goal. In contrast, our attack finds it difficult to get into this area to have an effort on goal, so we don't score as many long range strikes as we perhaps could.

We have players that can do it but other than Evans no one else seems too bothered about doing it.

I have watched a couple of highlights back and there are times when Duffy has more than enough time and space to get a shot on goal. A lot of teams expect us to keep working the ball down the flanks and they commit some of their midfielders out wide which leaves space in the middle.

Leeds at home was probably best example recently as you could have parked a bus on the edge of their penalty area at times.

What I've noticed is when our players do take a long range pop and score, it's instinctive, i.e. first time and without a touch. If they have time and space then it's faff time followed by a scuff or into row Z. Used to call it the collywobbles.

Fleck edge of box, ball bouncing awkwardly on his right foot all the morons shout shoot.

Which is worrying as a large majority of the stadium shout shoot.

Its just frustarting when we try to pass the ball into the net, if there is an opening for a good shot at goal we should take it.

We fuck about far too much when shots are on. Fleck should get 10 from midfield with the shot he has in him.

Unless you're playing against Sheffield United where the odds are about 1 in 4 - certainly felt that way earlier in the season anyway!

I understand where you're coming from but we all know refs can be unpredictable and frustratingly inconsistent with time added on, they don't always follow it exactly.
Even an extra 30 seconds could be enough for the opposition to score a breakaway goal which would be a large risk.

Far more worrying & frustrating is our lack of goals from set pieces , when was the last time we headed it straight in from one of our piss-poor corners ?

I think the last goal from heading it straight in was Clarke vs MK Dons last season. We have a couple of goals from the second phase this season: Stearman, here volleying in from a flick on vs QPR:

Wilson at Carrow road:

Carter Vickers also got a goal from a goal move scramble at Bolton following a corner:

Jack O'Connell hasn't scored a goal this season, and Stearman only has two.The other is a header from a crossed in free kick vs Sunderland:
