It may have been touched on before(although I cannot find it) but on watching highlights from various lower leagues there are many instances where players shoot successfully from outside the box.
Do we have players capable of this and if so why don’t they try it ?

That’s the problem with highlights, it doesn’t show the fifty attempts that hit Row Z.

Yep it has been touched on before, back in 2019 ^^^

'If there is just one thing I'd like us to work on for now it would be shooting from long range. When the opposition is back in numbers and we can't get an overload or a decent cross in, we either are forced to play it backwards and lose momentum (if not the ball) or put a poor cross in our strikers have no chance of scoring from which risks the counter attack.'

True, but at least they are attempting to score and have the ability to do so

Good question. It’s a problem we’ve had for over 20 years, doesn’t matter who the manager has been we just don’t shoot/score from outside the box.

Probably only with long range scoring potential is Brewster. But you get the feeling he's been instructed specifically not to take pop shots during the few minutes he's had.

To get a good shot away you have to:

Have good balance
Be able to create space
Be able to create an angle
Have good ball control
Be calm with the ball at your feet

All attributes which apparently cost too much money for grotty old us.

So we'll stick with the hoof thank you very much. It's the only thing that fans of this club deserve

One of our real successes over the past five years (not so much this year, granted) has been that we don’t take low percentage pot-shots from outside the area but keep recycling the ball until we can create a much better chance, normally for Sharp from three yards out. There’s an argument for taking a few more long range shots because we’re too predictable at the moment and it gives the opposition something to think about, but possession is hard to come by in the premier league and all we’d be doing is surrendering it 95% of the time.

Out of the regular starting 11 fleck has a decent shot on him but has never really seemed comfortable doing it. Brewster strikes a decent ball but plays a bit high up the pitch to do it regularly. We don’t really have a midfielder who’s a specialist at it.

Sadly whenever we have a free kick just outside the area we have no one capable of working the keeper let alone scoring from it.

Maybe in the lower leagues the keepers and defenders aren’t as good so are less able to deal with long shots? We were a bit vulnerable in our first year back in the championship, less so when we’d got Hendo and defenders that could react quickly to his saves and get the ball away from danger.

It’s strange, we can smash a ball 70 yards every ten minutes when we finally get ball back from oppo. But can’t put a 25 yard cross or shot in from outside area.

Yep Michael brown was the last.
We have cracked it in from range in the past. Murphs's against Donny sticks in the mind, and Evans v Boro a bit back. But genuinely planned smack from range, De Bruyne style?

Never. We have to work it wide, cross it badly and shuffle it in off a shoulder or a knee.

I'm really struggling to remember the last really good goal we scored from long range. Norwood's at Brentford a few seasons ago?

Yep. When Oliver Norwood was 'Oliver Norwood'. Now, he couldn't hit a fat cow's cunt with a hockey stick. Lundstram came to us with this vague rumour 'he can hit them from range', but every shot he's had, close or far and even from twelve yards with one person covering the centre portion of the net, he's fucking useless. Didsy at Arsenal is the only 'from range' effort we have successfully pulled off this season and that was 19 or 20 yards. These days the modern game is full of at range efforts and shots. last free kick goal? Wasn't it Fleck at the shit-tip and even then a second ball roll through?

As I have spent quite some time illustratiing, Wilderball doesn't facilitate getting into shooting zones or creating angles and space to open up the body to get your foot through it in a controlled manner, on target. Even if it happened once per game and the keeper had to make some effort to save, instead of the tame, scuffed efforts we have seen. It's a numbers game ... one of them will go in either directly or off a player.

Thought the same during the game last night, more attacks need to end with an effort at goal.

When we do try long shots though almost all of them seem to be too high. McGoldrick and Lundstram are examples, while Fleck's efforts are usually wide. Many left backs used to have powerful left foot shots (is that a thing of the past?), but Stevens only occasionally strikes it well. JOC looks like being able to blast them from range, but can't remember him doing that at all. When a chance fall to Basham I just hope he does something else than shooting.

Before he got injured I thought Berge's passes often seemed to have more power than his shots. A lot of his passes are hard and precise and it looks like it takes him minimal effort, so maybe he should just try that technique when he has a go.

Jags has a good shot on him.

The crowd love a long shot and always remember the ones that come off, but few go in because, yeah, goalies are too good. And sometimes bit looks like a last resort when attacker has run out of ideas.

However, I think we should definitely gamble and take more shots from distance. If you can hit it hard and on target, you might force a corner or a punch, with a chance to get onto the rebound. It's what teams do to us.

I reckon Brewster might be our best bit if he touches the ball at some point
