Been meaning to do this for a while. Will try to do one every few days. Obviously, the short write-up is from a WH point of view. I'll try to sort out some of the formatting!

The Bramall Lane crowd were entertained beforehand by the Regimental Band of the Coldstream Guards, then tormented by West Ham once play began, then infuriated when the ref disallowed Kettleborough's effort which would have made it 1-2. Three goals in the last three minutes.

All West Ham's early season gloss has disappeared. The Blades have gone 13 games without defeat and in Derek Pace have one of the stars of the moment. Walter Winterbottom must have admired his volley which opened the scoring. At the death, Woosnam scored, then hit the bar.

It's never crossed my mind before but I wonder how close Doc Pace was to being recognised by England.

His goalscoring record was impressive and consistent. 253 appearances for us with 140 goals.

My first hero in football when I was 6 and first started going to the Lane with my Dad. Had his name and 'Up The Blades' painted on my rattle. They were all the rage back then 😃.
Can't recall him ever being on the verge of the England team, but I was only a sprog back then.
Certainly knew where the net was though. Not especially tall, but a great header of the ball and could certainly put himself about.
Great memories of those times. Hodgy in goal, Joe Shaw at centre half, Doc Pace centre forward and all of them around the 5' 9" mark.
Mind you a different game back then.

As I commented 5 years ago (see post by Silent Blade ), that 4-1 ‘hammering’ has been totally erased from my memory. Despite your best efforts, that is still the case🤣 Thanks for posting this; I look forward to more

Blades' manager John Harris was aggrieved about Scott's equaliser, from Bond's booming cross, which might have been offside. West Ham had gone behind when Moore toppled Allchurch and Graham Shaw fired the penalty in off the bar. Thereafter Alan Hodgkinson stood defiant.

Six weeks have been frozen off. The icy pitch causes Standen and others to come out after half-time wearing canvas boots with rubber soles. The change helped earn West Ham's fifth away win, bettered only by Everton and Wolves. Boyce scored off a post, Sealey headed the second.

Enjoyed the referee’s name for the Upton Park 1962 game. Plenty of scope for a bit of terrace humour.

Hammers are toppled off their perch by Blades' first win of the season. When Allchurch let fly from 20 yards to make it 0-2 few would have bet on Hammers' revival. Byrne's header and Boyce's speed of foot made it 2-2. Jim Standen flapped at a cross to gift Allchurch the winner.

The only reason lowly Hammers are not terrified of relegation is because Bolton and Ipswich are so far adrift. The Blades complete the double over the Hammers; indeed, they let them off lightly. In addition to the goals, Jones struck Standen's crossbar. Pace might have had a hat-trick.

Revolution Sr told me about the game at the Lane once: he may have also written about it for the Flashing Blade Fanzine now I think about it.

Dad said that when they were warming up, a group of West Ham players, including Bobby Moore, stood in a circle and played a sort of one touch passing game where they flicked the ball back and forth. They were incredibly skilful, and my Dad said that you didn't really see anything like that in those days (West Ham's training at the time was a lot more technical and skill based than most other teams'). Having watched this, My Dad and his mates thought we were going to get outplayed, and so it proved.
 

I went to both games In 89/90

At the Lane we had about 200 corners and couldn't score- we lost 2-0 Mark Ward got both he had criticised Bassetts style of football before hand.

In the return under the lights at Upton Park/The Boleyn or whatever the fuck you called the ground we lost 5-0, and west ham fans also smashed most of the coach windows outside ground, bizarrely Sheffield United kept this game, the Oxford away thrashing and the Leeds thrashing on the end season video but didnt include our wins away at Swindon or the game at Oldham.
 
91/92 West Ham featured in our first game of our new kop, off memory we scored an equaliser with a great corner routine Paul Beesely scoring

I also recall it was another joke crowd announcement the ground was rammed and attendance announced raised actual chuckles

The new kop was shit and amazingly we have never upgraded it.
 
Sheffield United 3 - 2 West Ham

My first season as a season ticket holder as a young lad.

A night match under the floodlights.

Bishop scored for them first 0-1

Homes scored for them again 0-2

But then the comeback happened.

Whitehouse with a belter 1-2

Brian Gayle from a corner 2-2

Rogers then made it 3-2

Great game and Carr and whitehouse were brilliant that night

In case people think the number of corners was an exaggeration - it is but only just. I think the actual total was 28/29. Totally played them off the park and lost 2-0. The reason I remember it so well, I moved house that day.
