No, did well at Luton. Was non-league before Luton

Yes

Yes, which is why the two above answers are yes. He splashed out on Sabella, then had to claw back losses by selling and replacing on the cheap, culminating in the arrival of one of our finest, Tony Moore.

Well you had Roger Moore so what's the difference?

Despite the way it ended up, it actually makes fascinating viewing as a slice of social history, or at least football history, like Barry Davies going on about how the referee didn't need to award the penalty because there was no danger to the Swindon goal - if that hadn't been given these days there'd have been a riot.

I'd also forgotten the terrible sinking feeling I got when Chesterfield got that late penalty in the Cup; you know, the kind of feeling you get when you know they aren't going to miss. On the subject of penalties, THAT penalty might have been soft but I remember me and the whole Kop screaming for the handball to be awarded and going all light-headed when the ref pointed to the spot. I also remember thinking, "Ah good, a seasoned pro to take it; we're safe!" when I saw Don Givens placing the ball on the spot.

The pitch was shockingly bad, and I don't even remember that winter being so bad.

And the Huddersfield 2-2 draw; wasn't that when Steve Kindon came on as a sub with us 2-0 up and absolutely ripped us to shreds?

Finally, I knew we were in serious trouble when we were two-up against Millwall and lost 3-2; quite possibly the most disastrous capitulation I've ever seen at Bramall Lane.

I was working in North Yorkshire on the day of the Walsall game and couldn't get the day off. This was pre-internet and texting days. At half time I phoned Radio Hallam and asked the receptionist the score and she told me (looking back she spoke rather unconvincingly) that it was 1-1. That's OK I thought.

Full time I'm able to get in front of a television and watch the results. There it appears on the screen 0-1. For what seems like ages I'm staring at the screen thinking the BBC have made an error as it was 1-1 at half time. Then it dawns on me it's not a mistake ......

I've never listened to Radio Hallam since that day.

One of life's great mysteries is how Stuart Houston played for Man Utd and Scotland - Dean Hammond would have run rings round him

In over 50 years the worst performance IMO ever was his at a cup replay v Altrincham, we got hammered by non-leaguers - and then it was a drive home across the Pennines in the snow

Sorry, I worded the first question ambiguously. What I meant was 'wasn't he a former non league manager who'd gone on to have success with one league club'.

They were all intended to be rhetorical.

.

When Kindon came on the pitch, the Blades fans were shouting "Fat Bastard, Fat Bastard". "Flying wardrobe" Kindon shut up the fans by scoring both Huddersfield goals. He might be overweight but he could run very fast!

There's always loads of ifs buts and maybes when you get relegated but there were plenty that season - weren't we 4-2 up with a minute to go in the game away at Walsall and managed to grab a 4-4 draw from the jaws of victory?

Just from watching the footage from each season, you can see how the quality of the football deteriorated dramatically from the heady days of Currie and Woodward to that awful season in 80/81.....

Hurry up with 1981-82 WalthamstowBlade will ya!

I started going after this but there were still quite a few players from that season still at the club. Some, by then, had redeemed themselves so it was odd to see players like Hatton, Kenworthy etc having bad games and looking a bit shit. (I'm sure they had shit games when I was there too but I was a kid and I don't remember them).

And what a total cunt Curran was. I think that may be more relevant to the previous season thread but I thought I'd mention it anyway. It can never be said enough.

Even worse is that we signed the cunt later.

I quite like that kit.
Wow what happen to this member , i remember certain members that move on , hope he’s ok used to post a hell of a lot , it brings back memories when you start to look at old threads not only of events but certain members you had forgotten about .

It's a decent kit! Striking and bold. Could probably get rid of the thinner side stripes I suppose.
It’s absolute shite and we had to put up with it for more than one season in those days.
Yes.

I would hate people to think that I'd just been on Wikipedia, but Lee was born in Sheffield. Peters was the one in dark glasses, having gone blind one eye at a time ten-years apart, the second one at the age of 16 from being hit by a brick - unlucky doesn't even cover it. United weren't unlucky, just plain SHITE.

They were worse than United and that’s saying something.

He was actually a nice lad but seemed to go off the rails a bit. Ok a lot.

Tyler, not Matthews.

Brings back some fabulous memories! To think Chester finished above us and we’ve lost some proper traditional teams from the league. A real shame. Who remembers Meadowbank Thistle?! …… and just a quick point to the younger generation….. big 6 my arse…. Only Arsenal & Liverpool were in the top 6. Chelsea? Keep working your way down

Yeah but that season helped create the following season. Which to this day is still one of the best.

I never understood why we never sang "Bob has got his hat on ...." to the tune of The Sun has got his hat on. ... "and he's going to score today" which he generally did.
It did get sung mainly on train specials, coaches or boozers on away days
I would bet it was composed by a Bobby Hurst aka Rotten used to come up with random songs back in the day
