Norman Hunter was manager of Barnsley in the early 80s, when he built up an excellent side. I remember them outplaying us in the Milk Cup back in 1982. I had only started supporting United in 1980, and Barnsley seemed like a huge side (compared with who I had previously seen us play). I don't know if others have seen this You Tube video, unfortunately there is no picture for the first minute and the quality after is poor, but I found it fascinating. I remember thinking what a good player Tony Glavin was.

Tony was his brother who never played for Barnsley.

Remember the game well, it was early on in the season after we'd been promoted from the fourth, and if I remember correctly we had beaten fourth division Hull in the first round, then 2nd division Grimsby in the second round (did we thrash them 5-1 at the Lane, after drawing 3-3 at Blundell Park in the first leg ... if memory serves Edwards came off the bench to score a second half hat-trick, and was that the game where Alan Young played emergency centre-half???)

I thought the Barnsley game was a bit of a let down after beating Grimsby in the 2nd round. I think it highlighted that Porterfield had gone top heavy on buying forwards and wingers that summer, when there was nothing wrong with the forwards we had at the club already (Edwards, Morris and Hatton ... the latter leaving halfway through the season to help Cardiff get promotion from our division at the time) and should have brought in quality defenders (Stancliffe, Bruce, Forrest perhaps) and another decent midfield player (Wilson) instead.

He rectified it a season later when we scraped up on goal difference, but I always thought Porterfield missed a great opportunity in the summer of 1982. I always thought if he'd have bought wisely when Brealey was still splashing the cash then we could have gone up again in 82/83 as a strong team to take on the second division.
