Hi everyone, just a heads up that this years Sheffield football programme fair will be held on Sunday December 30th at the usual venue The Royal Victoria Hotel.

Plenty of stuff this year with over a dozen dealers present, that's twice the number that it had in previous years.

Ranging from Programmes, (league, International, Non League), Tickets, Autographs, Books, Badges, Subbuteo etc etc

With the day of the fair being moved to a Sunday, instead of previously Thursday or Friday it won't get in way of work for too many.

Will update in due course which dealers will be in attendance.

Regards Sharrow.

I used to go to that fair in the early to mid 80’s, it was at the Royal Victoria Hotel then too.

Around 1980 I would often visit the open air market (next to the Sheaf Market). On Mondays there was a guy there with a stall selling football programmes. The same guy (who was a big Blade) later opened up his own football programme shop on Shalesmoor from 83 to 85 ish. Think the shop only opened for a couple of hours each night, 6pm whilst 8pm.

Wonder if the programme dealer/ collector still goes to the United matches, wonder if he’s still alive?

Alan Scholey...... afraid not. He passed away some time ago. As a lad I used to visit his market stall which is where I became hooked on collecting Blades programmes and memorabilia. It can be a great ongoing hobby with programmes, tickets, teamsheets, badges etc but sadly few younger supporters are interested now
:(

Sorry to hear that Alan is no longer with us, he was a real chatterbox and friendly.
Some people seemed to go to his programme shop just to chat and never actually buy anything.
He was a programme dealer but all his best/ rarest United stuff he kept for his own Blades collection.

Crikey. This thread potentially opens a can of worms for the Carrier Bag Firm. My dilemma is - I don't collect anything at all myself - but, I am often the only pukka Utd fan (ie excluding parents, family, etc) at some age group games (U23s away at Colchester's Training Ground at 1pm on a Monday) - and I am INUNDATED with requests.

If there are any Teamsheets - get me 5 can you?
Five, what do you want 5 for?
I need five of each for my collection...

I sometimes don't post Teamsheets on Social Media - because as soon as I do - my phone goes red hot - get me some - get me some.

Some of the Carrier Bag Firm, if there is no teamsheet available at an obscure age group game, will PRODUCE THEIR OWN on a laptop & home printer - team badges & logos downloaded from the internet, the lot. They call these Souvenir Teamsheets (as distinct from Official Teamsheets). Yes - Really. I've seen them pass them around to each other. It's mind-blowing some of the capers they pull to get hold of these Meaningless Bits Of Paper.

sheffieldrose once went to an U23 game with me at Forest's Training Ground. She asked whether we'd have to pay to get in. I told her we wouldn't. But that the Carrier Bag Firm would be annoyed at that. They, of course, would much rather pay to get in - because there'll be a Meaningless Bit Of Paper handed to them (ticket stub). Getting in free is no use to them, as it yields NO memorabilia. Mind Blowing

Oh blimey Phil, I cannot think who you're referring to. (lol).

I'm not a fan of people producing their own, if there's nothing produced for the game then so be it....should be left at that.

You leave the CBF alone ;)

If I don't see you before, Phil, I will catch up with at Bishop Auckland for the Youth Cup

That's very true, and his own personal collection was going some....I believe that Joe Elliott from Def Leppard offered him a sizeable amount for his collection many moons ago. I think Alan' s two lads ended up with it.

Can I just explain that Sharrowblade once purchased a "job lot" of SUFC memorabilia at an auction. One of the things in that job lot was an invitation to my 50th Birthday Party. The fucking CBF man, there is no bit of paper that they won't snaffle into a Carrier Bag. I mean, I love them to bits obviously. And, I've got some great material for the planned exposé. But, it was like someone walking on my grave.
I won't go to this Programme & Memorabilia Fair, I lost an old passport a few years ago, and I'm worried it'll turn up in a box of mixed 1983 non-league programmes. The CBF are RELENTLESS.
See you at Bishop Auckland Sharrow.....

How sizeable are we talking? Hope it doesn’t get lost somewhere down the line :(

Remember the programme shop on Shalesmoor, I think he used to open it Weds-Friday evenings and possibly Saturday mornings?? In the early-mid 80s used to go every week spending my pocket money on old United programmes. That was up to 1985 then I found pubs!!!. I'm sure the programme shop was still there up to 1996, I was working at Griffin House that year and the only reason it stuck in my mind was because I couldn't believe it was still open!!

Very sizeable and parts have been sold off individually in the past but these could well be duplicates. The majority of United league and cup programmes post war are obtainable if you hunt around with the exception of a couple. Then it gets harder with the more obscure cup and friendly games. Pre-war a little trickier but wartime single sheets are like rocking horse shit

The shop closed after Alan Scholey suddenly passed away. He was in his 40s, I think.

That's correct Stu, although there's quite a lot knocking about pre-war, but then some are asking three figures for them, so the market is a bit limited. Best off saving for the bound volumes, you get more for your £2000 then :)

Just another reminder that this year's Football Programme and Memorabilia Fair is taking place on Sunday 30th December at The Royal Vic in town,

Doors Open at 11am, with 14 dealers in attendance

Thousand of programmes and badges available.

I'll be in the room somewhere in the centre, I will have United Friendlies, Tickets, Team-sheets, and Reserves. Come and say hello

Funnily enough, I've got various raffle tickets and meaningless bits of paper not even close to resembling an actual ticket that I've kept for this very reason :D

Any idea if there are old shirts sold at these sort of events?

As a general rule, probably not, although you can never rule it out.

What you'll get is a wide range of football programmes, (Local, pre-war, modern, Internationals, non-League etc etc).

With the likes of Terry's Badges and Nick Westwell in attendance, thousands of badges.

They'll be a lot of signed stuff like photographs, Cards, etc, a ton load of books

Somebody always seems to have some Subbuteo Stuff, Match Attax, Panini etc

More confirmed stall holders for Sunday's fair include:

Yorkshire's largest programme dealer Mick Hewitt,

Bob Brown who will have a lot of 50s and 60s programmes.

Co-Organiser Gordon Bennett will be coming up from the South West with an eclectic mixture of all manner of programmes.

Larger than life, Tom Roe (Preston fan), somebody has to be, will have a selection of signed memorabilia and other oddments.

Regards Sharrow
