Shaun Miller

Yes he is. Barring a spectacular turnaround I cannot see him being retained. Other than bits and pieces he has barely played let alone scored.

Cant see any of the out of contract players being offered something; save for maybe:

Flynn - another year if he keeps up recent form
Hill - another year as cover player maybe

So expect to move on:

Howard, Westlake, McMahon, Barry, Kennedy, Whitehouse, Williams, Johns, Miller, Porter

I think others may go even though under contract :

Ironside, McFadzean, McGinty, Brandy, Taylor, Cuvelier to name but a few. Like to add Collins and Doyle to the list but wont happen I doubt.

Whatever league we are in, it will be a much changed side

In theory...Miller could be the striker we're looking for this transfer window, knows where the goal is, clever movement/link up play...just doesn't seem the same player at the moment though, whether thats the injury, fitness or just down to game time...

Think Clough said it'll be next season before he's right again, he did miss the whole pre-season.
But unless he gets back into the first team and starts scoring I reckon he'll be released...

I think there is a player in Miller ,just need fitness and confidence ,1 goal and he will start flying ,would probably play away at Fulham.

I am amazed at the transformation we have seen in Flynn and Murphy. In particular Flynn. NC and his team have worked wonders on their game / confidence. I hope they can have the same influence on Miller. I know it's a cliche but when you get successes like this it really is like signing a new player.

I would give him another year to prove himself.

He had a good spell last season before his injury but all honesty im not sure if he is the real deal or not.

Looked class at times. The goal against Scunthorpe was class then injury in the same game?? Trouble is he may just be one of those players who s body cannot take it and has injury after injury. Now if he had raul s body!

Interesting one is Shaun Miller. A severe injury, out of the game for months, with whatever blows to confidence and self-esteem this will have carried with it. The point about Flynn and Murphy should be a reminder that because a player may, momentarily, be at the back of the queue, what he can offer is the point worth remembering. Clough and his backroom staff are knowledgeable enough to know whether a player is worth persevering with, and this will include the time-scales considered relevant to his recovery. I hope, for Shaun's sake, that he can recapture that dynamic quality that we all saw in him. With what looks like a new, more dynamic, look to the side being created, I hope Shaun responds to what's being put together. Tough game football, both on the pitch, and with the off pitch issues that can make or break a career. Good luck Shaun.

Agreed. He needs a pre-season tbh - there'd be little harm in giving him one more year. If we do manage to get another alternative to Baxter up front, may make sense to loan him out till the summer.

To be fair he hasn't really flown at any stage in, what I'd guess, would be 10 years as a professional.

43 goals, just north of 1 goal in every 5 appearances, mainly at lower league level. 27 years old at next birthday.

Looks the part, but the stats suggest otherwise.

Move on, for me.

Give the lad another year and a full pre-season. He was quality before the injury and may just need the time to get back up to speed.

Id like the lad to given another year.

I know there is no room for sentiment in football (and look were it has got us in recent seasons)
But we know what hes capable of & he wont be on a massive wage either.

Hes worth another year in my opinion.

I think his good start was probably a bit of a flash in the pan. He couldn't get in the Crewe side when we signed him.
Think of all the players we've had over the last few years who have looked good at times, but haven't been consistent.
Almost none of em are now in the team. Porter obviously made Miller look better as Miller can score the odd goal or two.
Porter's scoring record would make Emile Heskey look like Alan Shearer. I don't think there's much point keeping Miller unless something dramatic happens rest of the season. We always give players one more season and they always end up doing nothing much and getting released anyway.

I like the man but what would a pre season offer that is not on offer to him now?

Miller signed a two year contract in July 2012, "with the option of a third".
It's not clear whether it's up to him to exercise the option or United?

Either way, I don't think he would want to stay where he's not wanted so it's probably a moot point.
Personally, I wouldn't be in favour of extending his contract.
Clough needs to be allowed to sign as many of his own players as possible and Miller wasn't his choice.
He was signed before the "game-changing" investment and we should be able to afford and attract better now.

It's interesting that he went 27 games without scoring before being allowed to leave by Crewe.
He seems to be very much a player who scores in short bursts and I think we need a more consistent goal threat.
In terms of this season, I would hope we can bring one more goalscoring, pacy striker in and allow Miller out on loan for a month or so to get some games under his belt.

But we know what hes capable of

But seriously, exactly what is he capable of, and over how long has he demonstrated it? Take away sentiment, and being impressed over a very short spell, the stats don't show anything to consider worth keeping.

There's a limit on how many players we can have, and looking at what NC has brought in, I think we can do better.....

Much as I like the lad I would have to say no. He's struggled to play his way back into a regular starting place and doesn't seem to suit Clough's system.

Clough will have an opportunity to rebuild the squad from ground up in the summer so we can't afford to be giving surplus players another chance. He did great before his injury but sadly for whatever reason he's struggling to make an impact now. Perhaps simply due to various circumstances but that's football.

Quite interesting after Porter scored on Sunday, Clough celebrated, then went straight to Miller in the dugout to explain something.

Either a "see, that's what I've been talking about in training!" or a "see, that's what I expect to see from you every week" ?

Or "Where the fuck did that come from? Have you been doing some extra work with him after training?"

Or get stripped kid. I've got to get him off before his agent starts to think he's a footballer

When thinking about Miller you have to look back at the opinions on Murphy and Flynn pre clough. I was verbally hammered by mates at the game and online when I said that I thought that Murphy and Flynn could potentially be top players for us and very important if played in the right way, both for me were attacking minded players and too much emphasis was placed on them by previous managers on the all round game, the defensive side and overall they weren't allowed to play their natural games with confidence.

Miller did show in that spell that he can be very dangerous and that he knows where the net is, a very nasty injury and he is out of the game for a long while and as a result is bound to lose his sharpness, his reading of the game and his confidence. If Murphy and Flynn are anything to go by then we know that this management team are able to instill this in players and get them playing again.

I think Miller is worth investing a bit of time and confidence into, if Cloughy and Co invest time and effort in him get him playing like Jamie Ward is down Derby then he will be a very important player for us and I do think he has the potential he just needs to find his feet again.

In all seriousness and in answer to OP, he started to look a footballer before his injury. Not brilliant but he was better than some I have seen. Whatever his history, he had been coached well. Maybe a flash in the pan, equally maybe a footballer finding a home. Heart says keep him. Head says Clough has better options and no sentiment.
