DAVIS, LONG STILL IN PLANS

Mark Hughes has reassured Southampton captain Steven Davisand striker Shane Long that they remain in his long-term plans.

Davis and Long were left out of Saints' 18-man squad for the goalless draw with Burnley on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

"I've explained to the guys that didn't play that it's not a reflection on me thinking I don't need them or they're not in my plans because that's not the case," said Hughes ahead of Saturday's trip to Everton.

"I think players, unfortunately - and it happened in my day - when they are not in the first 11 for the first game of the season all of a sudden they get a little bit anxious and think maybe my future lies elsewhere and agents are telling them they've got to move.

"And that's not the case with Shane and the likes of Steven Davis. They're very much part of what we're going to do this year and I just said to them: 'At the end of the year, you'll look back on the season and you'll find that you've played many, many games so bear with me'."

If what Hughes says is true than how come he ain't good enough for us?

Living in Hampshire I know a lot of Saints fans. They are very critical of Long and do not want him in their match day squad let alone the team (and incidentally, they do not think that Gallagher will make a Premier League striker but is up to Championship football at the higher end of the table). If Danny Ings and Gabiadini are fit, I don't see either getting many minutes of game time. But can CW the Great turn either of them in to the finishers we need.

Shane Long is absolutely dire, if we sign him we may as well get Joe Hart and Mustafi and get beat some records as we get relegated.

Shane Long is a good dependable , run around a lot , striker who occasionally hits a bit of a streak , before getting injured/ going quiet again
If we where in the premier 5 years ago he’s the type of player we should have gone for then , not now .

He's exactly the type of player Stoke would have bought 5 years ago and look where they are now!

If he's really on 60k p/w then well.... what the hell can you say about that.

If he was on 30 or 40k he'd be a more viable option for us.

He'd do well for us too I think. Quick, experienced, hardworking and quite flexible. And Irish - properly Irish.

He seems to get a bad press (namely because his recent scoring record isnt great) but i still reckon we could do worse than to bring him in.

That said, his wages would have to be substantially cheaper than what he is supposedly on now, so i dont think its a starter.
