What I can't understand is how the draw will be made as there are 34 teams in the Northern half and 36 in the Southern half.

Does one team get a bye in the North or what - 34 breaks down to 17 in the next round. Then what?

I've looked at the Capital Cup website but can't find the answer - anybody know?

If there is a bye, would we want one anyway?

I think second round onwards it isn`t split North and South. Add in the Championship teams then Premier, the European and it all comes out in the wash eventually

Don't 72 teams go in in the first round - i.e. everyone except the PL teams?

So 36 go through to the second round where I believe they are joined by the bottom 12 of last year's PL = 48.

24 then go through to the 3rd round where they meet last season;s top 8 from the PL = 32 and Bob's your uncle.

You could be right.

Many thanks

:)

Also, I was thinking JPT as well - midweek confusion, eh?

:( ;)

We draw Burton Albion at home in the first round and lose, that's how it works.

We do have a history of coming up against shit teams in the first round and losing in the last few seasons:

2009-10 H Port Vale L1-2
2010-11 A Hartlepool L0-2
2011-12 A Hartlepool D1-1 (won on pens - harrah!)
2012-13 H Burton D2-2 (lost on pens)
2013-14 H Burton L1-2

Also interesting is that for the last 6 seasons we have been drawn against the same team two seasons running three times - see above plus we played and (beat) Port Vale in the first round in 2008-09.

No, the clubs involved in Champions League or in the Europa Cup go straight to the 3rd round

Sunderland have not qualified for Europe. League Cup runners up do not get in.

There has to be 8 teams exempted to the 3rd round to make the numbers fit. I assumed that it would be the 7 Europe qualifiers plus the highest place non Europe qualifier. Silent thinks (and he may be right) that it is last season's runner up.

Wikipedia suggests that to sort this problem out they don't give an extra team a bye into the 3rd round: they give teams a bye into the 2nd round (usually the 18th placed PL team from the season before)

That wouldn't work as it would give you only 71 teams in the first round.

Someone who is better at maths can confirm this, but I don't think you can get it down to 32 in the 3rd round if 7 come in at that round. I think Silent is right. Certainly when we finished 18th in the PL in 2006-07, we had to play in the League Cup 1st round the following season.

The draw is quite simple, Sheffileld United get drawn to play Burton Albuon, and then Harry's Game logs on to say how much he hates the cup and it's ruining our chances of the play offs

And it turns out that:

70 teams go in the first round (2 of the relegated teams from the Prem given byes)
35 winners plus 2 13 PL teams + 2 Championship teams in the second round
25 winners plus the 7 European qualifers go in the 3rd round.
