Just watched our second goal v Fleetwood - and I think it's phenomenal.

As a precursor their player has a tantrum, slams the ball into the advertising boards - always entertaining (and, thinking about it, maybe a sign of frustration at having to chase shadows all evening).

Coutts comes on for Hammond. Goal kick. We pass it sideways and backwards - and sometimes forwards - till it ends up with JCR heavily marked - he goes back. This takes about 30 passes and we got nowhere. Apparently. In fact the ball ends up back with Howard.

More passing. They get in a challenge, McGahey dawdles initially, their player sniffs a chance, McGahey recovers, back to Howard.

Three quick passes, including a surging run from Bashambauer and great movement and footwork from Billy, Done crosses to Adams who nearly gets on the end of it.

JCR picks it up at the back post and rather than punt it hopefully into the box works it backwards.

More backwards and sideways passing till it ends up out on the left with Done, who miscontrols it and they get a foot in and clear it aimlessly.

We immediately get in again but this time Wallace is tackled.

We work very hard to cover and their player hoofs it into the vast empty spaces in our half. This really must have been dispiriting: they finally got the ball and they had to hoof it to Howard.

More passes. Down the left again. We lose it again but Done and Adams press and win it back immediately. Back it goes - though this time we can keep it in the middle third and play it through there. Eventually ends up with Coutts who, in one of my favourite passages of play, plays it into Adams who dummies it to Sharp. Sharp to Adams. (Yorke and Cole anyone?) Billy's pass is a fraction overhit forcing Adams wide but he gets a cross in, they cover and scramble it clear.

Wallace intercepts, drives forward crosses...

...Done misses it (may have been pushed), Adams doesn't 2-0.

Passing, movement, pressing, teamwork, confidence, creativity, speed, understanding, control, drive, and a great finish.

The whole thing was total domination.

What a goal.

It took you 4 days (and Friday beer?) to realise how good that goal was. Bergen Blade will be pissed off with you and himself for not posting such an analysis earlier.

Yes, great goal. Note though, that this eventually was a one pass attack, showing the value of winning back possession high up the pitch and exploiting the momentary lapse of concentration and organisation that often follows.

When we are attacking there will be some players that don't take an active part in the attack. These players still have an important role, ie attacking marking, which is what Wallace does well here. As our attack breaks down he's in a good position to stop his man counter attacking, and not just that, he's able to get in front of his man and then launch another wave of attack for us.

Apart from his part played in both goals, Bashams contribution is getting better and his timing of reacting to breakdowns.
(No AA or RAC jokes please).

Unfortunately the headed attempt from them that finishes this video, indicates the fact that Mcgahey has to be much more switched on if he us to make it as the centre half that his physical attributes indicate that he should be capable of.

Agreed.

There's a good article on gegenpressing here http://www.theguardian.com/football...opp-liverpool-gegenpressing-borussia-dortmund

I posted that for various reasons but one thing that really impressed me was the amount of football in all its forms that we crammed into that sequence of play.

slow build up - when Coutts comes on
quick direct passing - the break down our left
pressing - how quickly we make them play and as a consequence we recover the ball, and start again
teamwork - as above but the hunting in packs element, and constantly supporting thean on the ball
creativity - Che and Billy, there were plenty of others in the rest of the game, especially Bash
partnerships - Che and Billy again

and much more.

There's definitely room for improvement, but for me that passage of play, and the whole game on Tuesday belie any notions of lack of fitness, lack of desire, or lack of effort.

The players worked as a team all over the pitch.

As one response has said it was total football - perhaps not in the original sense but in the sense that we showed a very wide range of capabilities.

For me it was really great to watch.
