I’m naturally an optimist, and after Port Vale thought we had an even chance of getting in the Play Offs and if so, a decent chance of winning them. But Saturday and tonight have made me finally realize that we’re not going up this year. And I’m fucking livid that this will almost certainly be another clusterfuck of a season will eclipse the last one for shittiness

The natural instinct is to sack the manager. After all, Adkins has had plenty of time to sort this squad out. He’s been allowed to bring his own players in, and has had 40-odd professionals to choose from at the Lane.

But we’ve been ineffective and tactically awful. So who’s fault is that?

It’s really really tempting to say “sack Adkins”. But Danny Wilson didn’t turn from a decent manager to a shit one overnight. Neither did Micky Adams. Nor Nigel Clough. They are all decent. But they “failed” as Blades manager and were sacked. I’d suggest the same is true of Nigel Adkins. It’s the club, the structure, the disharmony, the enormous weight of expectation, that’s holding us back.

All joking aside and at the risk of mockery from the pigs, we are a big club. In fact, potentially one of the biggest. When we were last in the Premier League our attendance was the 11th-highest. Who’s to say what it would have been had our stadium held another 10k.

It’s worth pointing out that the only clubs that got higher crowds that season were Man United, Newcastle Liverpool, Newcastle, Chelsea, Man City, Everton, Villa, Spurs and West Ham. Sunderland also got slightly higher crowds than us when winning the Championship title - but remember - we pulled these crowds in a relegation season.

Most will deny it, but attendance-wise, the Blades have the potential to be among the biggest clubs in the country. We’re not alone of course, Wolves, Leeds and others have similar potential (Leeds even more than us) but let’s not under-estimate how big this club is.

Well-intentioned but disastrous decision-making by McCabe, and a huge chunk of bad luck, got us here. I think that the huge hunger for success, and the resulting massive pressure, is one of the reasons we are still down here.

If Adkins doesn’t walk, and thinks he can handle the pressure, I feel we’ve got to give him next season at least. Who can say someone like Steve Evans or Chris Wilder, who are also decent managers, would succeed at a place where so many other decent managers have failed?

We need a manager who is aware of the size of the challenge, and will recruit strong-willed players who will fight tooth and nail to get us out of this league. If Adkins thinks he’s up to the challenge next season I’d be behind him. His record is as good as any of the others waiting in line.

It's not over though, is it? 4 points off the play-offs. I don't think we'll get there but Coventry are getting worse results than us at the minute.

It's not the anger and despair, it's the hope that kills you.....

Please don't even suggest we can make the play offs. Roy of the Rovers isn't real you know.

Regardless of Coventry 8 points from our last 8 games is relegation form.

As it is for Coventry. Southend aren't doing much better. It's not good enough but I'm simply pointing out that there's a sudden bunching around that last spot.

Forget about the gap. We're not going to make the Play Offs, because we're shit. Get over it.

Season ended when the JTW ended.

Fuckin ell I can't even be arsed to look for a Life of Brian "always look on the bright side of life" meme to post in response to that. Life's a piece of shit.

I thought the season was over most on here a while a go?

That Rotherham fan Barney gave up in October!

The season was over weeks ago. The lack of activity in the JTW was akin to the raising of the white flag. We have not been able to string two wins together in months, so 4 points or 14 points it's irrelevant.

McCabe has been out to have his £90 million rant and scared all the nersayers away and in Sept after 2 games of the new season he will sell Brayford leaving the new manager with a further weakened group of ageing journeymen and it will all start again!

I hate what those people are doing to the club I have loved for 45 years. My missus said tonight aren't the Blades playing? Yup. Where? The Lane. Why didn't you go? Because I can no longer be arsed to watch the death of a thousand cuts.

I was there when Givens missed that Pen, this feels just as bad.

We really need to stick with him. I agree.

But at the same time it can't be a free ride, so what would our expectations be?

Some of it's intangible, like playing high-tempo attacking football.

Top 6 at Christmas - but what if we're 7th?

What should be expect from Adkins next season to show he's worth sticking with? Might be worth a thread of its own.

What should we expect .

PROMOTION

Nothing more , nothing less.

The issue this season is the players . He has no excuse next season , as any issue will be him.

Ruthless yes.

Question is: After bringing in Hammond, Woolford, Sammon, and with a massive clearout due in Summer, is Adkins the man to re-shape the entire squad? If he brings in more like those mentioned we could be royally fucked for 2-3 more seasons!

He can't have suddenly turned into a shit motivator and awful man-manager without an eye for a good signing simply because he's become Blades manager. Adkins is very highly rated, and could have taken over a Championship club. .Hopefully next season he will realise what it takes, and the type of player we need.

Remember, Warnock had a few seasons where we did nothing. It won't happen overnight. Like Adkins said, it could get worse before it gets better.

Who is this Steve Evans, of whom you speak.? Surely not the fuckwit who is doing so well trying to relegate dirty Leeds? Chris Wilder, erm erm A bit too Bladey Bladey, what with the promotions he has missed out on I may
get stoned for this. Not the first time but Adkins is by far our best hope for next season IMO of course

Given that there is a major re-build to go through this summer and the fact that is often difficult to take over a squad not of your making I think Adkins should go at the end of this season or the end of next season and not have some xmas focus on whether he is to be replaced or not ( unless he does a Weir of course). Either way the club must be getting a pretty toxic rep amongst potential managers worth having.

Yep, people calling for Adkins' head don't seem to realise that there are lots of factors contributing to our poor form. Sacking the manager is the simplest and easiest option when the need is to "do something". But given our history of sacking managers and then getting worse, we'd be a laughing stock if we sacked him three quarters of the way through the season, and aimed to start from scratch yet again with yet another manager who's been successful elsewhere
