Quality scouts are like quality players, they cost money.
Being as they cost money, good old proper club Sheffield United feels it can manage without them and get by.

Is that true? I'd imagine it's very hard to keep a good young talent secret these days, and those with the money simply prevail in the chase.

Genuine question by the way.

Like Crewe and MK Dons ?

I remember John Harris getting rid of Keith Kettleborough (who was a classy player from my memories of him - probably flawed memories) because his face didn't fit.

Keith was good enough to be selected in the original 40 man squad for the 66 World Cup team. As for his face not fitting, it didn't fit his head either, he wasn't a handsome chap (but a very nice bloke)

But we don't appear to cast our net much further than Derbyshire, Blackpool or Scotland!
We're a third division club though so we don't have the income to cast the net that far and wide. Yes I know the counter argument is that the prince has money, but we still have to run like a business.

So at a guess we're scouting with guys that the club know and trust in areas where were likely to get results.

Plus scougal, Murphy, Flynn and McNulty all seem to have been decent young signings and people like Harris haven't done bad so far.

Che Adams and Wallace apparently offer some potential too

So is the scouting that bad? Seems that once we step out of these areas we struggle ;)

Well we're still in div3 so let's see ;)

I don't follow. My question about scouting is genuine - does the salary of scouts count for that much?
I personally think it would come into it if we were to start scouting abroad, but that's along way off..................oh,hang on a minute, isn't Baki already supposed to be on the case with that:)

Would scouting in northern France be much more expensive than Scotland?

For me this raises a question; which UK team has the best scouting network?

Manchester United must have a good one, Newcastle have Graham Carr who has helped bring in some cracking players for Pardew and Arsne Wenger must have had one of the best since his time in England. Then I think about the players that such as Celtic have brought in from Europe.
